RE: FLAMING STAR

Just glanced over this list of "musicals" and was amused to note the inclusion of "Flaming Star" on the list.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, it features Elvis Presley in an overtly dramatic role as a half-breed caught between two worlds. Elvis only sings two songs...one being the title song over the opening credits & the other being a brief song during the first 10 minutes of the movies. To call it a 'musical' is like calling "The Manchurian Candidate" a musical because Frank Sinatra stars in it.

BTW...if you like westerns & need a filler to get free shipping, "Flaming Star" is a steal at $4.99. Besides Elvis' smoldering performance (read the customer reviews on Amazon), it also features a great, balanced cast (Steve Forrest, Barbara Eden, Delores Del Rio, John McIntire, etc.) and a fine, action-filled plot that was ahead of its time (sympathetic toward Indians while showing violent excesses on both sides). Direction was by the great Don Siegel, who was responsible for so many tough performances by Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry, etc.) and who also greatly influenced Eastwood as a director.

***For those who do know the movie, be sure to click the link and check out the new DVD cover. Got to be one of the worst examples of misleading movie advertising ever. While the previous cover featuring Elvis solo wasn't great or even representative of the film, the "new" version has a photoshopped closeup of Elvis snuggling cheek-to-cheek with Barbara 'Jeannie' Eden...making every effort, it appears, to connect this fine dramatic movie with the fluffy, formulaic Elvis romantic "singing" vehicles that were mass-produced under the Colonel's oversight & which existed mainly to sell soundtracks & cash in on the fan base. Sad to see a really solid movie so miserably treated...I imagine that anyone picking it up as a blind buy will be very disappointed if they are buying based upon the cover (just as many who might otherwise have enjoyed the movie will never give it a second thought based upon the horrible, totally misleading cover).

Sounds a lot like the deceptive VHS packaging for Marilyn Monroe's River of No Return.
