Canterbury's Law---Series Discussion---New Julianna Margulies series

Premieres tonight at 8pm on FOX before New Amsterdam.

I've seen a few promos for this and it actually looks quite interesting. I'm especially intrigued since the pilot was directed by Mike Figgis and it's from the creative team behind Rescue Me. Denis Leary is one of the Executive Producers.

Synopsis for pilot:

Spoiler:

Debut: Julianna Margulies stars as a maverick defense lawyer who plays by her own rules to help the falsely accused. In the opener, Elizabeth Canterbury (Margulies) believes her client is innocent in the murder of a child, and clashes with her partner, Russell (Ben Shenkman), over the best way to prove it. Williams: Terry Kinney. Denis Leary is one of the show's executive producers.

If anyone is curious, there are only 5 episodes for this series. It was a victim of the WGA strike and Ms. Margulies pregnancy.

They should have resurrected Philly instead but I'll check it out, even though given it is on FOX, it will be short-lived.

Also, has there ever been a television defense lawyer who wasn't a maverick and didn't play by their own rules?

Matt Roush called the main character "House in heels" (or something like that).

To me, she sounds more like a female Alan Shore (at least, early Alan Shore).

I made it thirty-five minutes before I switched it off during a commercial and never went back. I'll be surprised if this makes it more than 3 more episodes.

I made it a half-hour and then I FF to the end to see how the case ended. I assumed it would end with the asshole dad on the stand and her somehow getting him to admit he was the one who killed his son. Sure enough, at the end the guy was on the stand and she taunted but then he suddenly just decked her in the face and knocked her to the floor.

I have not laughed so hard at a drama before. It was just so over over the top and hilarious.

She got up and wiped the blood off her face and said "The defense rests."

Won't be watching again.

I like JM but this show was hard to stay with. I ended up turning it off and playing XBOX until New Amsterdam.

I sat through the whole thing hoping it would pay off. When she got decked by the dad, it was magic. Didn't make it all worth it, but if there isn't much to watch, I'll check it out again.

Wanted to like this...but it sucked. It's another one of those "if it wasn't over the top it might be good" type shows. Very much in the vain of K-Ville...which had a ridiculous and insulting ending to the first episode and made me not watch it from that point on...but alas this was not good. I think 3 episodes is a good estimate.

I didn't understand why Ms. Canterbury was cheating on such an apparently nice husband.

The show is officially dead. FOX is banishing the last 3 episodes to Friday's

Not a surprise at all. Maybe Julianna Margulies will now be available for ER next season after all.

This is probably good news for New Amsterdam now that it has House repeats as it's lead-in.

Because they're going through something that no parent should ever have to go through? Because they have no closure to what happened to their son? Because she blames herself for what happened and she chooses sex with another man to deal with it? Because from what we've seen in two episodes, she doesn't want to talk about it? Because this is what she does: cheat?
Or maybe he's not as nice as we think he is?
Because, because, because.
Why does anyone cheat?

Holy crap, the last 10 minutes of last night's episode were so bad. It doesn't help that Marguilies and Quinn have no on-screen chemistry at all.

I'm glad this show didn't get much better than the first 15 minutes I made it through. It makes me feel better about deleting them in a fit of disgust.
