Doorway to Dalí is a collection of rare film clips pertaining to the great Surrealist; Salvador Dalí. While in the Doorway to Dalí you get the opportunity to see Salvador Dalí pitching Alka Seltzer and Lanvin Chocolates, you also get to see the artist muse on the subjects of Science, Mathematics and Nuclear Physics.
Those whose only knowledge of Dalí is from the image he presented to the media, will be surprised by his vast knowledge of science and psychology, inspirations that often found their way into his paintings.
How Dalí manages to contemplate the Atomic Theory and come out with a timeless masterpiece, invoking the writings of Freud and Einstein, is explained in his own words. In one interview from the 1950's, a young Mike Wallace manages to peel away Dalí's often comical public persona and discuss the true motivation behind his works. When Dalí says “Every artist paints the Cosmology of themselves” it is as if the two have reached a common ground and mutual respect that allows Dalí to shed his layers of pretense and reveal to Mr Wallace, a Salvador Dalí few have ever seen.
A true find is about 10 minutes of footage of Dalí never before seen by the public.
Doorway to Dalí engages, provokes and pushes you through the door leading to Dalí's universe. Then it throws away the key. Once your mind is opened, you will long for further immersion into the mind and work of the phenomenon that is Salvador Dalí!

Just watched most of this today. Man, Mike Wallace comes off like a bit of a d-bag during his interview. Most of his questions are the equivalent of, "Why ya gotta be so weird?" And then after one question (which prompted a very long reply), he basically says, "I didn't understand most of what you said, so let's move on." Admittedly, Dali's accent is thick, but I understood him okay, and I wasn't sitting there getting paid to listen.

I was struck by Wallace not only smoking on the set but doing the commercials for his sponsor, Parliament cigarettes. (Especially in view of his later "60 Minutes" expose on the tobacco industry!)

Yeah, those Parliament commercials were high-larious. I was doing other things while they were on, but I remember one of their selling features being something about how the filters "don't leave the tar on your lips." No, they leave it in your lungs, where it belongs.

I thought Wallace came off arrogant as well. I guess you have to consider the time period and the intent of the interview. Obviously it wasn't to showcase the mind of a genius but highlight his eccentricities. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed what I saw of it so far.
I also found the cigarette commercials fascinating since this was before my time. I would love to give this to the art teacher of the high school where I teach to show to his class, but I'm guessing the Parliament commercials aren't too appropriate.

Mine was addressed to Sam Thomas. I'm guessing the DVDs aren't being shipped out in the order they were ordered: A friend of mine ordered a week after I did and lives across the country from Redondo Beach, CA yet received the DVD a week before mine arrived.
