I did a search but didn't find anything about this one. Anyone else excited about it? Right now it's sitting on 8.2 at IMDB and 80% at RT. How great is the poster for it?

The trailer doesn't do much for me. I'll hold out for reviews but at the very least I'll give it a rental. Statham is at the very least entertaining in his movies.

So, among Statham's filmography are: The Italian Job, The Brazilian Job, and The Bank Job. Can't wait to see The Hand Job and its sequel The Blow Job...

I was going to make this thread the other day after watching the trailer on Yahoo. It looks fun to me.

I saw this last week and it was pretty good. Don't go by the trailer which makes it look like any of his other movies. this is more of a drama bank heist gone wrong. The heist is the catalyst for some political/organize crime intrigue due to what they get from the bank. It takes place in the 70s England. It also seems to be based on a real story. Overall I was surprised with it in a good way.

Is it more serious then what's in the trailer? The trailer makes it feel like there's a good amount of humor.

Could we actually have a good Statham movie here? I haven't liked anything he's done since Transporter...

edit: scratch that, I did like his supporting roles in Italian Job and Cellular.

I personally like him best as a supporting character. In an odd way I think he has a larger screen presence when he's not starring in the movie.

no its a serious film. the trailer doesn't do justice to the film at all. you get a little humor because the guys pulling the heist have been friends since childhood so there is good camaraderie.

the poster is great. makes it seem like one of these italian 70s police actioners. when i went to the screening the pass was a postcard/lobby card of the poster and I couldn't comprehend why they would do it that way so you would have to give it back.

Solid flick. Saffron Burrows is distractingly attractive here. Interesting that Donaldson used Michael Coulter, who usually shoots romantic comedies, as his dp. As a result, The Bank Job doesn't feel or look like most generic action pics; there's a bit more depth here and the aftermath of the heist is rather suspenseful.

I liked it, the casting was spot on, humor (some) and action was mixed well. The heist was very well done.

This was a very entertaining film from the get-go, and it simmers quite steadily, and maintains most of the tension throughout to the final act in a very satisfying conclusion. Even to the last bit of details as the film concludes with a few screens of text telling the viewer what happened to the characters later, the sense of irony on display is very funny. The casting was uniformily good and solid, Jason Statham and Saffron Burrows being the more recognizable of the cast as the story is about a bank heist in London in the early 1970s.

There is a charm and wit to the screenplay, but it never overwhelms the bank job storyline, nor undercuts the consequences as getting into the bank vault, which proves to be much easier than extricating the gang from further trouble from many fronts after the deed is done. Director Roger Donaldson (who directed that fine thriller "No Way Out" over 20 years ago, and many other films of note in between) has a steady and assured hand in the direction of the film. My audience was in tune with the film's cheeky's humor (laughing at all the right spots), and yet felt aghast when the film turns a bit dark in the final act), but had a fine time overall.

I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

I enjoyed it a lot! It's not typical of recent heist movies in that there's no twist or clever gimmick involved in the bank robbery (other than discovering the old crypt). The robbery itself is straightforward and transparent, and when the crew finds itself between a rock and a hard place afterward, their way out is also pretty clear and obvious. Those looking for sudden turns in the plot will be disappointed, but I liked that it's all pretty direct. Jason Statham is great in a more understated, nuanced role than his usual one-dimensional tough guy character. He is very believable as a dedicated family man who makes some bad choices. Saffron Burrows is absolutely beautiful and confident in her part, but I wish they had made her role a little meatier by introducing more conflict for her. The rest of the cast is really good--particularly the main policemen and the primary villains. The 70's setting is well done, not in-y0ur-face at all. Just a solid, well-made movie.

Went to see this after hearing all the flack 10,000 B.C. was getting.... happy we did. Kind of expected something more outrageous with Strathem (thinking about Transporter series) but was glad it was a more grounded film and he did really well in his part. Enjoyed all the characters and felt bad for the outcomes of some of them.
Sorry to see it didn't do so well, hope it will get some word of mouth next few weeks.

Just got back from this movie. If you go by the trailer it's a light hearted heist film. It actually turns pretty dark and violent after the heist. Torture, murder, double-cross, intrigue is all there. Well done with a good cast. I give it a solid B+ for entertainment value.

My one complaint; those think British accents can be just as tough to understand at times as a foreign language.

Really liked it. I agree with all the people who said it wasn't overwhelming.

Could've easily gone over the top with the robbery or the ending, but it kept at a decent pace.

Finally got a chance to see this. I thought it was a very well made, solid movie. There's no standout "must see" scenes but there's also not a lot of stuff hampering it. The movie makes the most of its 110 minutes, as (minor spoiler)

the actual "heist" happens roughly halfway through the film

I'd recommend it. The movie doesn't have a ton of depth (you can't compare it to, say, Eastern Promises or The Lookout) but it's well-made (like the former) and more entertaining than the latter.

Saw this too this past weekend, really enjoyed it, and agree with sweet baby james, david suchet was perfect as the porn king. I really liked how they set the film, and the pace.

It was an extremely well done 70's film. redone for the 00s and made to look 70s.

I knew nothing of this film going into it and was expecting a dumb Vin Diesel-ish type of shoot em up and was pleasantly surprised that it was a more serious and well put together film. It reminded me alot of Stander with it's true story subject matter (of which I didn't know the Bank Job was based on).

I agree with you Sauce. I came here to post the very same sentiment. I saw it once in the theater and thought it was Statham's best performance ever. And a great film. Well, I just watched it for the fourth time myself today and this movie just gets better with each viewing. Meaning, I appreciate it more. Most definitely one of 2008's very best films. I cannot recommend this enough for people who are on the fence.

I always liked Statham's movies but he really did "act" in this one. In hios Transporter films I always felt he was so stoic so he wouldn't have to have any range before the next fight.

I finally watched this one tonight. Feel the same way about it getting better as the movie went along. I thought it started off borderline parody, like a blaxploitation/austin powers movie but then it got be pretty serious. Statham was good, though you half expect to him to kill everyone around him when cornered so it's kinda hard to believe when he doesn't.

I was pleasantly surprised. Good movie.

Just saw this movie - pretty good, interesting, and unpredictable! Statham is a good actor. He may act the same in every movie, but he really becomes each character he plays. He doesn't come across as some extremely popular actor that's playing up to audiences (for example, Depp and Streep). This is what I like about Christain Bale as well. Statham and Bale may always play the same characters in every movie, but they really seem part of their movies.

Now, all I have to do is rent Chaos and London, then I've seen most of Statham's films...

"Chaos" is a pretty good film (6/10). "London", not so much. But Statham is the best thing about it.

Personally, I think Statham is an above average actor who just happens to star in mostly B films. With "The Bank Job" being his best performance and movie. And if you liked that (which I see you did), keep your eye out for his next film after "The Expendables", "Blitz". From the great writer Ken Bruen. Who wrote "London Boulevard" which was just filmed with Colin Farrell, Kiera Knightley and Ray Winstone. But "Blitz" is based on a series of books with the same character so this could be an exciting new franchise for Statham. I hope so anyway. I highly highly recommend you seek out both the books "Blitz" and "London Boulevard". Bruen's books are so entertaining and fast reads. You can't put them down.

She plays a roller derby star in her latest, WHIP IT, directed by Drew Barrymore. And she does all her own skating. If that ain't action, I don't know what is.

....I wouldn't exactly call it action in the genre sense. She's doing a physical sport sure..but action? I don't think so.

My point is...if she can do roller derby then she can train in martial arts to do an action film. Look at any Jackie Chan film from his prime years. He did a whole chase scene on roller skates in...I think it was WINNERS AND SINNERS. Stephen Chow turned soccer moves into action scenes in SHAOLIN SOCCER. I'd love to see Ellen Page do judo moves on much bigger opponents. If the somewhat chubbier (and considerably older) Shannon Lee (Bruce's daughter) can do fight scenes in assorted DTV thrillers, so can Ellen.

Why not let your imaginations out of their cages once in a while?

Solid Snake PAC
09-24-09, 12:05 PM
Yeah but to compare her to Jackie Chan is weird, also Winner and Sinners was a cool flick. Loved the 80s with Chan.

For Page to hit in the action genre sense means that there must be some damn fine creation of a character to convince the public that she can kick ass. This isn't an action film. I'm not saying she couldn't do action but this isn't "action"

Again she's not an action actor, nor do I think I'd give her an action label just cuz she did Whip It. Just..no.

I agree that The Bank Job was just a generic type of film, far from being the best of the year, but it was still good, especially since it was a true story. I dont think Ive ever been let down by bank-robbing movies or sports movies - these genres always give me what I want. There is no way that I would ever want to watch it again.

Drew Barrymore screwed up the look of Ellen Page in Whip It - she looks all off - big forehead, wet hair like a wet dog, helmet not fitting on head, make up all wrong , etc...

And yes there is something hot about petite actresses doing martial arts. The Juggernaught vs. Ellen page scene was the best scene in X-men 3.
