I still think there have been movies using that wacky swirly color vortex as a special effect. I remember thinking it was a pretty cool impressive special effect at the time of its use, but when I think of it now, it's a pretty silly effect. It's usually used when someone travels to some new type of universe, time travels, or enters Hell/Heaven. Here are the ones that I can think of:

1. Contact
2. Hideaway (Sisto/Silverman flick)
3. Tron
4. South Park the movie
5. Spawn?
6. countless superhero cartoons use it when a character time travels

Dr. Who. I seem to recall the episodes that came before 2001 had trippy opening credit visuals; but the Tom Baker years definitely had a 2001 inspired time tunnel.

I think Star Trek: The Motion Picture has a fair share of this.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

The TV show Sliders used a version of it...much like the Dr. Who version.
