Leno will leave 'Tonight' on schedule in 2009
Didn't see this posted so....
CNN Article
I know this is old news, but more information has jumped into the news recently. Leno is apparently kicking and screaming about this and claims he has another offer somewhere else that is a competitive salary. Would viewers really follow him elsewhere? Frankly, I was turned off of The Tonight Show once he finally replaced Carson. Never really liked him (actually preferred Joan Rivers!). That he is being a whiny b!tch about it somehow doesn't surprise me either.
So Conan will take over that job leaving the late night open for the likes of Jon Stewart?

Jay Leno has allegedly said he'd like to stay "Tonight Show" host past 2009.
"Conan O'Brien will take over 'The Tonight Show' in 2009," NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker said Monday in New York at an event arranged by Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Zucker said he'd like Leno to remain with the company and that "we are in those conversations now."
"I'm hopeful that Jay will be with us," the executive told the question-and-answer session.
A deal for Leno's exit was finalized three years ago as part of NBC Universal's effort to keep "Late Night" host O'Brien from bolting to a competing network. Leno marked his 15th year as host of "Tonight" last May.
Leno has said he's comfortable with his planned departure but, according to a report earlier this month in the Los Angeles Times, the comedian has grown reluctant to retire as host of the fabled, top-rated late-night program.
Leno declined comment on the Times report when it was published. He had no comment Monday on Zucker's remarks, an NBC spokeswoman said.

Although there's been new news about this issue there's a pretty big thread here about this somewhere.

So would ABC retire Nightline to try to break into the late show arena? Hasn't FOX tried this and failed multiple times? Granted they now have outlets in exponentially more markets than the last time they tried, but why do they think this would work this time? I guess if they started at 11 after local news, they could beat the competition on other networks, but again that didn't work last time either (The Chevy Chase Show in 1993)
(The Arsenio Hall Show lasted for five years but seemed to be a niche audience.)

Don't like the Tonight Show Leno, but I've always wondered about NBC's decision to put him out to pasture so quickly. If he wasn't ready to retire why would they risk him going to ABC or Fox. While I'm sure the "Tonight Show" will still get a sizeable audience Leno's show is much more "safe" than a Conan show would be. I'm sure there would be a siphon off of viewers.
Getting Leno would be good for ABC. Nightline is pretty much an outdated concept in the 24-Hour/Internet news world anyway. It should have ended when Ted Koppel left. If you paired Leno up with the increasingly buzz worthy Jimmy Kimmel then ABC would be set.

I hope Jay decides to jump over to FOX. It would give him the chance to be a little more edgy in his humor. FOX hasn't really tried anything late night since they became a major network powerhouse, and Jay could bring a lot of viewers over to FOX that don't "get" the humor of Conan...like, I dunno...

Speaking of Kimmel, it sucks to be a Kimmel fan in Chicago.
The ABC station here puts a same-day rerun of Oprah inbetween Nightline and Kimmel, so Kimmel doesn't come on until halfway through Conan's show when it's already getting pretty late.

NBC really doesn't know how bad things will get if Jay leaves the "Tonight Show". The 10:35-11:36pm (or 11:35-12:36am) timeslot is different from the 11:36-12:35 (or 12:36-1:36pm) timeslot. I think Conan is funny, don't get me wrong, but a lot of people just won't "get" (I don't know what's not to "get") him. If Leno does really leave the "Tonight Show" in 2009 (which I need to see to believe) Letterman will be beating Conan in the ratings for weeks, even years. If Leno does go to FOX or ABC, he'll probably be beating both Letterman and Conan in the ratings.

Kimmel has been growing on a lot of people lately. Even among my social circle (early to mid 30s) seems like a lot of us have been turning him on lately.
Letterman used to be my favorite but the last few years have gotten awful.
I like Leno's first 15 minutes for the most part but his interviews are blah to me.
I like Conan once the first 15 minutes are over.
I can watch Craig Fergusen from beginning to end but he just doesnt get good guests yet.
Carson Daly should be shot and killed.
Kimmel has really been growing on me.

Not to dump on Conan...I do find Conan funny. I just don't think he's this comedic genius that fell out of Heaven that everybody seems to proclaim him as. Like Leno, I find Conan has his good points and bad. There's crap on Leno I absolutely despise and am quick to turn off the channel when it starts (such as "Jaywalking" for one to start with) but there's also crap on Conan that's just flat and not funny as well.
If Leno was to leave for another network, I think Fox would be his best bet, and go up in the same time slot as Letterman and Conan. Let Kimmel stay on in his late night spot...he's perfect where he's at.
I am actually more concerned about who they will get to replace Conan on Late Night. We've had two strong hosts on there now, so they have some mighty big shoes to fill. Maybe if ABC dumps Kimmel for Leno then Kimmel can go to NBC and take over on Late Night. That would be OK in my book.
And just a comment about Kimmel as a talk show host over all..he's one of the few I can watch past the first 15 minutes. Even with guests I don't really care that much about he manages to make the interviews entertaining. I'd love to see him get Late Night and be able to reel in some bigger name guests. His interview style is awesome and would be welcome in a bigger market.

I actually did write the station about it and they pretty much told me to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

I thought Stewart's name was bounced around as an eventual Letterman replacement? Last I'd heard, Jimmy Fallon had been mentioned as a Conan replacement.

Stewart is not taking Conan's spot. He's being groomed to take over for Letterman, when he retires.

Anyone else incredibly irritated by the way Leno continuously and loudly slaps his desk every fucking time he introduces someone? This is probably nervousness on his part but you'd think he'd have gotten over it after all these years.
I also agree with others here that Kimmel is the up and comer, not Conan.

I just recently started watching Craig Ferguson (based on some prior recommendations from this forum), and although his skit stuff usually isn't good, I prefer his monologue and interview style to any of the others.

Craig Ferguson is the funniest late-night talk show host on TV, IMO.
Kimmel is good, but not Ferguson good. Both should be the leaders in late-night, however. Craig has great monologues (for the most part) and his interviews skills are incredibly good. After 15+ years as host of the "Tonight Show", Leno isn't even half as good a Craig, who's only been a talk show host for 2 1/2 years. Kimmel isn't quite as good with the monologues, but the skits with Uncle Frank and Guillermo are great. His interview skills are at or around the same level as Craig.
Conan, Jay and Letterman are like the old dogs who keep on barkin'. I like Jay, and although I know he isn't the most well liked talk show host on these boards, I think he's funny. Letterman is alright, but his interviews suck, plain and simple. I love Conan, but his writing staff needs some changes.
