I thought this deserved its own thread.

Used with one of these CODES (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8519345&postcount=503) can make a good deal!

I was able to get both the Bee Movie (HD-Dvd) and Dewey Cox (BD) on one order despite both being pre-orders. I got both of them for 32.96 and no shipping. On the other order I pre-ordered Golden Compass (BD) for 29.96 with Beowulf (HD) for free. I hope they don't hold up my titles that are already out waiting for the later titles to actually be released.

That's some serious high def gangster action! went with films I don't already own in regular dvd....can't afford to be upgrading right now...will wait and hope I can find super deals on things like Goodfellas and the Bournes.

What really makes me mad is they don't have the Zodiac 2 disc HD DVD. That would have made this the perfect fulfillment order ever.

Now if I can just find out if that application i sent through ten days ago ever got approved :(

yep I got Michael Clayton and I am legend HD DDVD. At first I added both to my cart, and they were both 26.96, then I moved one to my wishlist and then back to my cart, and then one of them showed as free. !!

I just logged into my Columbia House account and the banner at the top indicates that for one day only (2/29), there is a b1g1 sale taking place (and it's unlimited) with free shipping.

Can anyone find a way to stack this with the B1G1 Blu-Rays deal to get 2 free?

The specific B1G1 on HD & BR appears to be officially over. HOWEVER, a new, better, and triumphant situation seems to have presented itself. CH is now running a full B1G1 on all discs, INCLUDING BR/HD (with free shipping). I was able to get a free Blu-ray while ordering a standard DVD of higher price. If this is indeed the new policy, all BR/HDs should be part of all B1G1’s going forward. Since they generally have these sales a couple times per month, this basically means you can get all your BD/HD through CH for half price. Sure the selection isn’t huge yet, but its growing, and all new releases have been there recently. This would be a good time to join if you’re not a member yet...

did it work on pre-order SD dvds for you?

When used as fulfillments, the relative cost of HD titles is quite good using BOGOF plus free shipping:

$29.96 titles: $9.81
$29.21 titles: $9.43
$26.96 titles: $8.31
$26.21 titles: $7.93
$22.46 titles: $6.06
$21.71 titles: $5.68

Assumptions: SD DVDs are valued at $4.80 and the two HD titles purchased with each BOGOF pairing are of the same value.

While I realize that most of us buying HD discs don't have much interest in SD DVDs, for those of us who have (had, in my case) unfulfilled accounts, the relative cost of HD discs is quite attractive. The values are the same for TV Edition HDL memberships (the relative cost of the enrollment sets is $15.325 each, in that club).

Also dead is the possibility of getting a extra SD title for free.

Also, none of the working codes have an effect either - 10% off, etc.

As was mentioned in another thread, the BOGOF on HD discs has returned. It works with a free shipping code or BOGOF SD DVD codes, as before. The terms of the offer:

"Blu-ray(TM) and HD-DVD(TM) Buy 1, Get 1 Free Offer: Please note that Pre-Orders can act as your qualifier, but can not be shipped as your FREE selection. A shipping and processing charge will be added to each selection."

Yes, near-release pre-orders WILL work as freebies, but be aware that it isn't supposed to work this way.

The expiration date of this promotion remains unknown.

Just go to columbiahouse.com, and in the browse box type "blu-ray". They currently only have 79 titles, but the selection is growing fast.

How does the auto-cancellation work with BOGO orders? I wouldn't want them canceling one of the items and charge me full price for the other--as I never would have ordered just one item for the price. A bunch of the items I ordered are now back ordered.

If the items don't come back in stock within 30 days, it should work in your favor. If it's a paid item, you'll get a refund credit for it (and still usually get the freebie for free). If it's the freebie, you should be able to get a replacement for free. You'll probably have to get a CSR on the phone, but since this was such a widespread promotion (not an obscure code like some of the other hassles we've encountered) you should have no problem with it.

But usually most titles come back in stock fairly quickly, so the only issue is the shipment delay.

^This business of just shipping DVDs loose in a big box is SOP for Columbia House. If a DVD is damaged they are good about replacing it. I got a big box with just two discs in it yesterday. One was still intact, the other, an HD DVD combo, was a floater. But it was undamaged, not a mark on it. (I was amazed; I've had BD floaters arrive unscratched, but not an HD DVD before.) So, I lucked out, no fussing with a return.

Nope! BD is easier to scratch than HD-DVD...

kenbenobi
03-05-08, 03:34 PM
FYI, CH lowered the prices on many HD-DVD's to $14.96 (probably due to Universal's price cut). So if another B1G1F code comes around that is valid on HD, jump all over it! All of the Bourne movies are included...

mazzystar
03-05-08, 03:37 PM
Awesome ^^^ some of the combos have come down in price as well, down to 20.

lizard
03-06-08, 07:49 PM
aren't BD scratch resistant?Yes, BDs do have a scratch resistant coating because the data layer is so close to the surface that a scratch will destroy the disc (they can't be refinished, like DVD or HD DVD). But they aren't invulnerable.

HD DVDs can be scratched as easily as regular DVDs but because the data pits are so close together they are more affected by scratches than regular DVDs.

Had to try and see if ordering Bee Movie HD-DVD on Feb 29th would give any free ones like Dreamgirls and Disturbia did, but today I saw on the main page in my account it said I had preordered Sweeney Todd!?! In my order history it still says Bee Movie though.

New Rambler
03-06-08, 09:31 PM
Have they charged your credit card anything? I have a similar order from 2-29, it still shows as "awaiting credit approval" on a card that has been used dozens of times there.

dsa_shea
03-06-08, 10:13 PM
It also said in mine that I had pre-ordered Sweeney Todd when I have done no such thing. Also, I am pissed off right now. I called them two days ago and explained that Bee Movie was a free selection I had chosen and now it had been cancelled. I asked the CSR if I was able to select another title in its place and he said that it would be no problem so I asked for 30 Days of Night. He said that he would redo the order and replace Bee Movie with this one and I would be charged for Dewey Cox only. Now today I check my account and not only do I have the original order with Dewey Cox for full price and Bee Movie, which I will never get, for free, but I now have another order for 30 Days of Night at full price plus another 2.99 for shipping. Can't they ever do anything right? I asked the guy more than once if this was going to go through and he reassured me that the original order would be revised. Now I have to go through the hassle of calling them again and hoping that they can fix this shit. I'm getting fed up with this crap as this is not the first time I have had a problem with an order and had it incompetently dealt with.

They took Bee Movie HD out of their system. Their system still has you down for Bee Movie, but the selection # is not valid. Right above the preorder section, it says when your last order shipped, and also says "Based on what you ordered, you might like..." Then it will list a title. That title will also be in your preorder list, although you have not ordered it. It's a glitch

lizard
03-14-08, 11:16 AM
^Pre-orders can often be selected as freebies if they are within a couple of weeks of release. It isn't Columbia House policy (which makes things "interesting" if one has to contact CSR about a mistake) but that's the way it works on their system.

Me too. I had a feeling they wouldn't be able to fulfill this one. But I spose if Bee Movie had been the pay title, the glitch could work in your favor by keeping the freebie...

I ordered Bee Movie as the pay title in a Buy 2 Get 2 Free order, anticipating it wouldn't be fulfilled, and now my account shows one of my previously free titles with a price next to it. Assassination of Jesse James Blu-Ray was out of stock and that put a wrench into things. I thought it would ship out as free before Bee Movie's release date. Now I have a situation that won't be fun to take care of.

EDIT: Scratch that. It looks like I got Buy 1 Get 2 Free with the Bee Movie cancellation.

I ordered Beowulf with Atonement. Beowulf had been pending forever, I was thinking maybe they were just going to ship it with Atonement, but now I see Beowulf listed as a return as of 3/18/08 with a credit of $0.00. Of course, it was never shipped, I've been checking the website and it never got to the shipped part.

This now means I have to refuse 2 packages of Atonement. The first one, I told them to cancel the order 3 weeks ago because Bee Movie was going to be canceled and that was the freebie.

I don't even see Beowulf on the site anymore.

Well that's lame. The HD DVD is out, so not sure what their problem is.

Same problem as usual, I would think. They didn't get enough initial stock (or it was delayed for whatever reason) to cover the number of pre-orders. You shouldn't trust CH with new releases if you really want a certain title close to its street date.

I might just go buy Atonement somewhere else and return the CH one if it ever comes.

What I might do is send back a porn DVD by mistake, and then yell "BRIONYYYY!!!" after the mail man leaves with it. -smile-

I just sent back two copies of Atonement about a week ago, so maybe one of those will get to you guys. I think its ridiculous that they couldn't ship out your Atonement when they shipped me two, one of which I had requested to cancel 19 days before it came out. i loved their response to me when i bitched about it taking so long: "well you won't get charged until it ships!" as if that's some kind of consolation. if it wasn't for the fact that they just gave me 35 movies for an average of $5 each i would be very angry with them ;)

On 2/28 I took advantage of this offer. I ordered Pan's Labyrinth, American Gangster, Beowulf, and The Invasion for a total of $56.92. I received an email confirmation and within the week(!) I received Beowulf and Pan's which were my two free titles. I still hadn't been charged by Columbia House. I assumed American G and The Invasion were on their way. On 3/12 I received an email stating, "For fastest service, log on to XXX and re-order the above selection(s) today by using a new credit card."

Turns out that I had to update my credit card information with them and reorder the titles. I was puzzled by this but it turns out that I had renewed my credit card some time back and it had been almost a year since ordering from Columbia House. It was the same card # just a different EXP. date.

I went online and updated my credit card information but I have yet to re-order those two titles or be charged for anything. When I go to "Order History" it says that I have no Outstanding Orders with my last Completed Order being on 2/28 for my two free HD movies with a total of $0.00. Why did they ship me my two free movies without checking my credit card information first and why do I have no outstanding orders? What would you do in this situation?

If you're not showing a balance due, I would let it go and wait for the next CH B1G1 code to come along if you still want them.

Whatever happened to honesty in this country? You got your free ones, you should pay for the others.

Paying now would only give a credit to his account. Thusly, giving more free dvds. Honesty has nothing to do with it.

Seriously, the CH rep would have no idea what you're talking about and you'd end up with a credit at best or a totally F-ed up account.

Trying to do the right thing in this case would probably become a textbook example of no good deed going unpunished. CH reps can barely feed themselves, let alone comprehend the "complexities" of your situation. Best to leave it alone. You could unecessarily sign up with a crappy enrollment code on your next membership if it helps keep your conscience clear.
