Sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a search and couldn't find the answer- I know there was an extra on the "Ed Wood" DVD that caused the recall but don't know exactly what it was or why. I heard some of the reissue copies still include the extra but it's not in any of the menus. Can anyone give me a quick answer on this? Thanks in advance!

One has a grey spine and one is black. I think the black was the later release.

Edit: I checked my copy which was the recalled version that i found before it was removed. I have the grey spine so that is the first release.

Don't be so sure. Mine was bought new with a grey spine and it turned out not to be the recalled version. I only found this out after I opened it and found that it did not have the recalled featurette. However, as posted above, the feature can still be viewed with a computer, it just is not selectable from the disc menu.

You can no longer tell definitively without opening/playing the disc. I tried the grey spine, spine number method and still got the re-released version.

The way you tell from the first and re-release is the menu correct? The featurette is shown in the menu. here is a screenshot from mine.

So any version still has the recalled featurette, just not in the menu necessarily?

Or, you could buy the R2 version which has the deleted extra from the R1 release. I had that one long before the R1 even came out and I held onto it because it has that one bonus feature we don't have here.

I think I know how you can tell the difference from outside:

but first some distinctions:

Recalled version has grey spine, though the corrected version can have either grey or black spines.

What you are looking for is the grey spine version with a security title sticker on top edge that reads "Ed Wood SE" if it says "Ed Wood: Special Edition," it's the reissued version sans menu selction for "When Carol Met Larry."

I know it will be hard to find these new and sealed or used with the sticker still attached, but in my experience as a collector (I've only come across 2 or 3 of these since the recall) this is the only exterior consistency that can help identify the recalled version.

I have the recalled edition with the security title sticker still on it. It says:

It has the menu selection for "When Carol Met Larry."

I don't know how to tell what edition you are buying without looking at the menu selections on the DVD.
I purchased mine on the original release day before the recall.
It has a light grey spine. Ed Wood in white letters with red outline. Front cover has a shiney silver frame with the words "Special Edition" across the top and "Winner of Two Academy Awards!*" across the bottom.

Oh, well! So much for that theory! I guess there is no other way to be sure but to open a new one, unless you know it was bought before the recall.

Believe it or not maybe the only way now to spot the original 2004 recalled grey spine DVD is in the versions original plastic wrap. The 1st versions released in 2004 were wrapped in heavy duty like shrinkwrap. The versions with the grey spine now are packed in studio fresh thin wrapping. Otherwise if you come across a grey spine used the only way to truly know for sure is to check the disc itself. So when the studio started to use the original grey spine it just created all this confusion.

So it all could be in the original wrapper. Hope this helps.

Man, I really need to know why "When Carol Met Larry" is so controversial and, since I'm being told I'm not allowed to see it, I've just got to know how to access it on my computer!

It's just a special feature about cross-dressing. To be perfectly honest, it really isn't even that good.

Looks like the copy my local library has is the new version, but the cross-dressing featurette is there on Title 16.
