It's official. 24 will not return until January 2009.

NEW YORK (AP) -- One fallout of the Hollywood writers strike is that fans of Fox's drama "24" have to wait until next January to see Jack Bauer again.

The network has committed to air a full season on consecutive weeks and had been planning to start last month. If it had started airing new episodes soon, the season finale would not have taken place until the summer, when TV networks rarely show their high-profile programs.

Even though eight episodes for this season had already been filmed before the beginning of the writers strike, producers would have had to ramp up production soon to complete the season.

So "24" represents this television season's most prominent casualty due to the writers strike.

A January 2009 start seemed the best way to comply with viewers' wishes that a season's episodes run without interruption to conclusion, Fox said on Thursday
Thanks writer's strike....

Why not just write a good 1 or 2 episode cliff hanger to this season, film them and show it now. Then, pick it back up next season in '09 where it left off. Seems retarded to let 8 episodes sit in the can, when they basically are cheating us out of a season.

Actually, I think this'll be good for the show. We need an extra long break after how bad Season 6 was...(shudder).

By the time this hits air next January, It will have been almost 2 years since the Season 6 finale. That's a really really long time between seasons.

There is no excuse now not to make that movie they were talking about.

Just a bump up because I read this on Dark Horizons: http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080306d.php

The producers of Fox's "24" are developing a two-hour "prequel" to the upcoming seventh season of the real-time thriller reports Reuters.

The movie, designed to bridge the two-year gap between Seasons 6 and 7, is targeted to air in the Fall before the show's January return.

The most significant TV casualty of the writer's strike, production on the seventh season was halted eight episodes in.

As the strike went on, the network decided to push the real-time drama back a full year and are still sticking by that plan.

Production on this TV movie and the remaining sixteen episodes is slated to begin in April.

Very cool! This sounds like a good idea, and a good way to keep 24 "alive" in the consciousness of viewers during the 2-year haitus. The only thing that might be better is if they could have aired this around now.

Something in the fall could be good, because right now I'm not really looking forward to Jan. 2009 because (1) S6 was so dreadful and (2) what I've heard of S7 doesn't sound any better.

I have to say that Season 6 was so bad, I don't really mind having to wait until 2009 for the show to return. They better spend all this extra time making sure that what they are planning doesn't blow donkeys again.

Very good idea to develop a prequel. Waiting 20 months between seasons is miserable.

I also disagree, the teaser for Season 7 looks very promising. The whole "War of Terror" storyline that 24 has been beating us to death with since season 4 has run it's course.

I still think they should've created a cliffhanger ending for the episodes already shot. Show those in the fall. Then, start up with a full new season in Jan. 2009.

Now we have an official source. Hollywood Reporter is now reporting the 2 hour movie for the fall. It says they will resume filming the show next month.

Perhaps this is why Surnow left? He wanted no part of a TV movie of 24?

So wait...what's going to happen to the eight episodes of s7 already shot?

Those eight episodes of s7 are going to be a part of s8 and we're getting an extra two hours for that "bridge"....right?

Season 7 airs January 2009. Starting with the 8 episodes already filmed.

Haven't we waiting longer for fewer episodes of The Shield or The Sopranos?

I was so dissapointed in S6 the season finale is still on my DVR...unwatched.

I guess I'll have to watch it soon. S6 just drained my life force so much I stopped watching it before it killed me.

But I will watch S7.

It was probably more of a "I've accomplished everything I've wanted on 24 in 7 years, time to move on," situation. No better time than when his contract was up this spring.

Trailers are usually great, and often misleading.

However, if you tell me Jeanene Garafalo is out as a "quick-witted FBI agent," I might change my mind...

Well, let's see. For starters, she's a different actress. How's that?

Chloe is a great, quirky computer nerd. Though she did OK gunning down that one guy, she's not an FBI field agent, if that's what you're getting it.

What can I say? J. Garafalo annoys the crap out of me, and I'm not happy about having her on one of the shows I like.

Mary Lynn Rajskub is a comedienne doing drama. She stood out like a sore thumb the first season she was on.

Jeneanne Garafolo is a comedienne doing drama. She will stick out like a sore thumb the first season she will be on.

Seams like a pretty similar situation to me, the only difference being that JG is a better actress. It's I'm just amazed people are so closed minded without seeing a minute of footage. But, whatever.
