TV Season double dips? 24: Season 1 - Special Edition 5/20
Just noticed this listed at DVDEmpire for preorder for 5/20. What in god's name could they be putting on here to get people to double dip on a TV season? Is this a first?

I think that might actually be "second" so to speak because they released the first 5 season in a special briefcase collectors set. Not sure if that set was available everywhere because I saw it in Costco, but don't recall seeing it anywhere else.

Maybe they're releasing it on BD, and want another DVD version to release with it? To make the new extras available to everyone?
I know that BD is the only way I'd consider re-buying a TV show, and I know some, perhaps many people won't even do it for that.

While I'm quite happy with the current season 1 set, I'm kinda glad they're gonna revisit season 1 and add some extras.
One thing I'd really love to see reinstated is the "previously on 24" segments, it's the only DVD season that has them cut out (even the versions on iTunes have the segments).

I'll wait for it to severely drop in price. There's no amount of extras they could add to make it worth another $40 or so. Maybe when it joins the rest of the 24 seasons in the regular $19.99 blowout sales, I'll pick it up.

i dunno how i feel about this. yay for the new features, but nay to the possibility that this might be happening more often. i hope they don't start holding back on initial releases of seasons right before the new seasons start so they can release a "special edition" later on.
i'm also interested to see how this steelbook packaging is supposed to work out. first battlestar galactica, now 24... anyone know what these steelbooks for season sets are supposed to be like?

Personally, I probably would on Blu assuming it was reasonably priced, of course.

All info from TVshowsonDVD:
For a while now, we've heard rumors that Fox would love to go back and do a nice Special Edition release of the first season of 24, which didn't get nearly as much bonus material as the subsequent season sets did: just an optional intro by star Kiefer Sutherland, and an alternate ending on the final episode. The reason for the low amount of extras was because the studio was hurrying to get it in stores, before the second season debuted.
In addition to the Kiefer intro and the alternate ending, there are now Commentary Tracks on selected episodes. We were told that there are definitely two tracks: one each on the first and last episodes for the first season. There may be more, but if so they aren't listed. Also, the new 7th disc is dedicated to just extras. There are a lot of Extended and Deleted Scenes on it (at least two dozen), plus some featurettes. We're not sure how long they run, or how many total featurettes there will be, but at least two will be on board: "The Genesis of 24 and "The Rookie".
-----------------
Not for me personally. I already have all 6 seasons in custom slim cases with custom matching artwork. All the varying case sizes drove me crazy, but the above set does look nice.

I'm glad that Season 1 is finally getting a special edition. It really needed more than the Kiefer intro to season 2 and the alternate ending.
I know it's probably doubtful, but I hope they got Stephen Hopkins to do one of the commentaries on the set. I know he directed most of the episodes, but left the show on bad terms. I would also love to see a retrospective documentary on how the show was created. A documentary similar to the 90 minute season 2 making of documentary would be fantastic.
