It's interesting to look at the reviewers on Amazon. It's either a five star or a one star show. I watched the first episode, having loved David Milch's work on DEADWOOD so very, very much. It was all right. I expected it would build in to something magnificent over the course of the season, and I would catch it all on DVD.
So...it didn't build into anything? Is it just a waste of time with great dialogue?
I think I'll still buy it and form my own opinion.

I still think that Ed O'neil should have gotten some awards for his performance. He also had some of the best lines on the show and there were some great ones from just about all of the characters.

I still think it's worth watching, though. Wish it would have gone at least one more year.

I watched about five or six episodes before giving up. I was interested because I'm a fan of co-creator Kem Nunn's surfing novel, "Tapping the Source." I thought it was a huge waste of time -- meandering storyline, lots of unnecessary yelling, extra characters that weren't needed and some really poor acting, particularly on the part of the professional surfers with no acting experience. And if they were going to cast surfers, why not have them actually surf one or twice? If not, just cast actual actors.
So, no, won't be getting this one. As a reference point, I'm a fan of the Wire, the Shield, Rescue Me and a bunch of other shows that are less relevant to this discussion. Never watched Lost. Did like Twin Peaks, though, so I'm not averse to meandering shows with more than a touch of weirdness.
