Goodfellas or Casino
Inspired by the Goodfellas vs. Godfather thread.
I've always thought Goodfellas what a much better film, Casino is more slick, but Goodfellas was out-and-out better, IMO. I was surprised to hear that some thought Casino was better...thus, the poll.

Goodfellas for me. I love me some Casino, but Goodfellas is such a phenomenal piece of art that it's hard to put any mob film over it, except, of course, The Godfather.

Tough choice, both are excellent, but if I had to pick I have to go with Goodfellas (since i am Irish with a little Italian on my mom's side).

Casino because it's just more entertaining
-Vegas setting is a beter feast for the eyes over NY
-Sometimes i have to be in the mood for all the family crap of GF, with Casino it's just chiefs kicking ass.
-Scorsese specifically made it have a heightened, exaggerated reality, from the colorful clothing (even the real Sam didn't wear such colorful clothes), hundreds of f-bombs, and pure COMEDY with every Pesci scene.

It is a much more beautiful film and I feel it is more focused and intimate and personal. It is also one of the most impressive films I have ever seen; In terms of scope, and ambition it ranks up there with the best directed films of all time IMO. It would definitely be my favorite Scorsese Picture.

While I think Goodfellas is the "better" movie, I see Casino as much more entertaining, due mainly to two reasons: the gaudiness that a Las Vegas setting naturally brings, and also because of Robert Richardson's cinematography, which is just eye-popping (and in one scene, I mean that literally).
Besides, Casino had six Rolling Stones songs (technically seven), Goodfellas only one. So there's another reason for the scale to tip towards the former.

Both awesome movies. Eventhough I thought at first that GoodFellas was a better film (and Casino being a bit repetetive of what GoodFellas brought forth), I found myself watching Casino a lot more because of what some people here have said..it was entertaining.
Sharon Stone's performance annoyed me a bit as I thought she tends to overact (as if to tell the world "Look, I'm in a Martin Scorsese movie!!!).

I liked Goodfellas better, but Casino had some brutally great mafia violence (but the Sharon Stone/DeNiro stuff went on a little to long). I wondered if Scorcese was trying to make a movie that was partially comedic.

"Goodfellas" is a classic and will go down as such. "Casino" has gotten better to me over time and i do quite like it, but it does seem like a remake of sorts and not done nearly as well.

My choice is Goodfellas. I watched it in a theatre for university film class in the mid-nineties and still remember people commenting on how hungry they were after it was over (there were a lot of close-up food visuals).
Casino seemed like it was Goodfellas in reverse. The final sequences of Goodfellas where Henry Hill is running errands and watching the helicopter really did a great job capturing how strung out he is. I still remember my film prof pointing out a scene where Scorsese makes three quick cuts as Ray Liotta hits the breaks on his car to avoid hitting the car in front of him. It had a really chaotic feel towards the end from his joyful days at the beginning of the movie.
Casino basically opens up with a car bomb and I think I remember Siskel and Ebert talked about the final shot (?) of the MGM Grand Lion. Basically, they spoke about how Vegas ascended out of the mob due to corporations moving in and shareholder interests taking precedent. Somehow, a story about how order arose out of chaos doesn't seem as powerful.

Goodfellas - by far the more "enjoyable" of the two to watch. Plus it is just so pitch-perfect in it's set up and delivery. Casino, while a very good (3 1/2 or 4 star) film, just doesn't connect as well. Plus it does seem to go on for too long... some trimming probably would've helped.
