DVD Talk review of 'The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters'

I read Francis Rizzo III's DVD review of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=31990 and...

Great review from Francis on a truly amazing documentary and DVD. I also very much enjoyed Brian Orndorf's review of the theatrical release. I think Brian is correct about the manipulation of the material by the filmmakers, but this is par for the course. Great documentaries are typically constructed realities. If making a great documentary simply involved recording interesting subjects, everybody would be churning them out. So much of making a terrific documentary lies in the editing, and it's here that The King of Kong really succeeds.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is the best small-scale human interest documentary I've seen in some time, and I've seen a lot. Bravo to the filmmakers.

Thank you so much for putting this on the front page. I had not heard about this move. I went out and got it today and it is truly one of the most enjoyable documentaries I've ever seen.

Absolutely. There's a capture in my review.
From my review:
The DVD has wonderful animated anamorphic widescreen menus built around "Donkey Kong"

Really enjoyed this doc, great blind buy for me! Guess it also helps that im a retrogaming fanatic

My disc seems to have been authored bad or something. On XBMC it crashes everytime or freezes in the menus, in the ps3 and oppo, if you fast forward, it automatically skips to the end credits, anyone else experience any oddities?

This is a great documentary. Fantastic. Really enjoyed it. Billy Mitchell is such a douchebag, and so are his "followers".

My fiancee both wanted to smash him and his little minions' faces in after viewing it last night. Good viewing though - definitely sucks you in.

Great movie, but they really had it out for Billy Mitchell. They tried way too hard to make him the "bad guy". I actually liked him more than the main guy who kept losing and crying all his life.

I've always liked Billy Mitchell, and I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Wiebe may be a crybaby, but Mitchell is pure concentrated douchebag. What's especially amusing about Billy is his look - he looks like what a geek would think cool person looks like.

I've heard that since the dvd came out, Billy took the DK record back from Steve, in public no less.

I'm unaware of any developments in this story since the DVD came out on January 29, 2008. The DVD includes all the developments since release of the film up to the point that the DVD was wrapped. If you have some firm info on developments since then please share along with links, though spoiler tags would also be appreciated.

Just go to The King of Kong website - they have some info there, along with a forum that has more detailed info on additional developments.

I think what he is referring to is what was actually on the extras for the DVD. So it didn't happen after the DVD came out.

It should still be in spoilers. It ties into the plot of the film.

I agree, I was just pointing out that I think it was just bad wording on slop101's part to say it happened since the dvd came out. What soSpacey listed in the spoiler is what is on the DVD as well.

I've never seen a man cry so much, this was completely fascinating.....let's hope this DK obsession is a side obsession and that these folks actually have jobs, otherwise it's just sad.

I've recommended this no less than 10x since I saw it 2 weeks ago.

You saw this film and yet you don't know whether these folks actually have jobs or not? Not a very careful viewer, I suppose.

Relax, Yakuza. He could've just as easily been talking about all the various side characters in general, the ones whose backgrounds were not delved into. No need to act condescending.

Ah, you mean like the attorney, or the 31-year-old retired investment banker, or the guy that rents out rooms in his boarding house, or the retired Florida widow. Now I see what you mean.
