Looks like Barnes & Noble have clearanced out these collections which both have normal list prices of $125 & $100. Now they are just $24.98 each (or $22.48 if you have a B&N card). It also appears these deals are available in the stores as well.
You get free shipping if your order is over $25. I have several comic book collections on DVD-rom and it is really cool having an entire library right there on a disc.

Reminds me of a great truth I read on this forum.
Rolling Stone has/had a deal where they offered a lifetime subscription for $100. People were discussing the best way to take advantage, like by giving the sub to your youngest child to get the most years.
Someone responded; "Better yet, give the lifetime subscription to the child of your worst enemy, that way, they'll grow up to be a leftist with horrible taste in music."

Looking at the Playboy page, I see that what's actually on sale, despite the picture, is the BOOK that comes with the DVD-Roms, not the DVD-Rom/Book set which still sales for regular price. Buyer Beware etc

But you aren't buying it from Playboy...you are buying it from B&N which clearly states it is an after-holiday sale and shows the dvds in the photo. Actually everything is exactly the same except the price. Others have stated they picked it up at their local store and no one has mentioned not getting the disc for the Playboy set.

The Rolling Stone book DOES include the DVDs(4 of them are included, 1 for the reader, the other 3 for the archives). They are in a gatefold package on the left side of the box. There is a cutout on the left side to hold the disc package. I just opened the package and verified this.
Was your copy sealed in plastic? Maybe someone swiped them in the store?
Funny, I saw the deal too late to order online, but printed out a 25% coupon and walked over to the B+N at Prudential Center, where I got the last copy for 18.71 + tax. So thanks OP!
But wait...the deal gets BETTER. If you don't want the Rolling Stone subscription, there are instructions on the card, you can mail it in, along with your receipt, to get 12.95 back. So, you could get the RS archives + book for as low as $5.76 + tax. Remember to save your receipt if you are interested in that.
Yeah I understand that if you want the archives, you probably are also interested in the current magazine. But maybe you already have a subscription, or can get one cheaper elsewhere, or whatever. In any case, it is quite possible to get the whole package for less than $6, if you have a B+N near you.

I don't know what page you're looking at, but this is from the description of the bargain package (from B&N.com):
"For the first time ever, own a DVD–based, searchable digital archive containing Playboy magazine's entire groundbreaking first decade--every issue--every page--cover to cover. This exclusive box set also comes with a 224–page companion coffee table book chronicling the behind-the-scenes history of Playboy. Plus as a special bonus--a newly printed reissue is included of the extremely rare first issue, featuring Marilyn Monroe!"
I picked up the last copy of the Rolling Stone one at a local B&N. It wasn't marked at $24.98, but it was in the computer at that price. The 25% coupon also worked along with it.
Jah-Wren Ryel

Notice that the circled item on the top includes the DVDs in the picture and the title itself says "Searchable Digital Archive - Every Page, Every Issue" - it would be pretty hard for B&N to weasel out of that one.
List prices are identical. Looks like someone just wiped the "Book With DVD" and replaced it with "Bargain" when they made the entry for the bargain version in their system.

Also note that the list price is $100.00 for both listings. There's no way a book-only version was ever listing for $100.00. Someone took those DVD's (if not wrapped) or DGibFen got a bad box. Was the disc holder missing or just the discs?
Click on the link on the description for the bargain hardcover that says "More" and READ the write-up. Or read the passage I quoted, which I copied from that page, and which explicitly states "a DVD–based, searchable digital archive".

So...here's a few other things worth pointing out.
On the Playboy book, you can get an additional 5% off by going through this link...www.bn.com/nscs. Unfortunately, they had a 10% off deal that ended yesterday. Or get 5% cash rebate, if you have a Discover card, and go through the shopdiscover link. Or get a few percent cash rebate through various affiliate shopping programs.
Also, the Rolling Stone book is back on the site---at $100!!!!
I was eyeing these booth up a week ago at a B&M barnes and noble. They were half off their list prices on the website. Playboy was $52 and Rolling Stone was around $60. I first noticed this sale a few days ago and instantly placed an order. I figured they both showed the DVDs which is what I wanted and ordered. I guess I'll open then when I get them. I might even go to the Barnes & Noble store and open it in person, explain the story and how I want a refund.
Is the Barnes & Noble return policy for online items simple? Do they allow you to return online items to their stores?

Yes you can return items purchased online to a store, but they will give you store credit instead of a refund. However several people have claimed they were able to use the credit to buy gift cards that could be used either online or at stores. If you want your money back then you will need to return it to B&N.com.

As I didn't order the Playboy set, I find these arguments fairly amusing, but if you look at the PICTURES for the set(both the cheaper and expensive) you can CLEARLY see the discs pictured. Look in the little closeups underneath the main shot, there are pictures of the discs, packaging, everything.
As for the Rolling Stone set, which I do have(thx again OP!), there is no way the book alone could have a 'list' of $125. It is a very nice large format 200 page paperback, and would sell for $25 max. In order to only sell the book, they would have to unseal the package and take out the discs, leaving a gaping hole(and do what with the discs, i have no idea). The book itself doesn't have a separate bar code on it.
I think what is confusing some people is that B+N seemingly has 2 of the exact same SKUs for 2 dramatically different prices. But if I had to guess, it is just because of the way they handle clearance inventory, when they get rid of the number of units they want, they close out the clearance sku. I was looking through the clearance section for other deals, here's another example(funny book if you like very deadpan humor, he is on the Daily Show...)
Maybe the clearance units are damaged somehow or have remainder marks, etc, my store bought copy of the RS was mint. I think it was just that they bought too many for xmas...
Looks like someone is going to have to risk it and open their sets they get when they arrive and let everyone else know the situation.
When I was at the BM Barnes & Noble, they had the playboy sets, $50, but neither of the ones they had were sealed in plastic. So I think it's definitely possible someone could have stolen the DVDs and maybe this is what happened to the one person who bought the Rolling Stone set.

Thanks for the thread. I called my local B&N about the Playboy one. The lady took a while searching and found the only one they had. She said it didn't have a price but it was the sale price. She offered to put it on hold for me because she didn't think anyone would find it. I bought it last night with 25% coupon = $18.73 + tax. It did come with 2 discs, book, and Playboy reissue. The box was wrapped in plastic.

No, I'm guessing it wouldn't ring up at $25 if it was regular stock. The sale copies (on-line at least) have a different ISBN, which would mean they're considered a separate inventory item with a separate and distinct bar code and price...

Something in a similar vein I want when it gets cheaper: The Marvel Vault
Went to a store in Austin that the online inventory search said had the Playboy set in stock. Went to the kiosk and printed the slip out (only one item came up in the search, and said it was in the bargain section). What I found were two large hardcover black books called 50 Years of Playmates priced at $24.95 each. Went to the info desk and handed them the slip. They looked it up on their computer and the little picture indeed showed the red box with the disks inside. The guy said that the computer showed one in stock, but that it was strange that there was no received date. He checked the back, and no dice.

There's an inventory locator. That should tell you which stores have the item, but it's not always right and since it's a clearance item it could be anywhere, not just where it shoud normally be. With my RS one, the vey helpful girl couldn't find a copy even though her inventory said she had a few. She took my number, then hung up and looked for it. 20 min later she called me back and told me she had the copy at the front desk for me. :D
If you're going to pick one up in store, I would certainly call first!

Got both the Playboy set and the Rolling Stone set in today. Both were sealed and both included the discs as I knew they would. The had bargain sticker UPCs on the front of them stating they were regular $100 & $125 respectively and were marked down to $24.98.

On the page with the item, right below the ADD TO CART button, there's a place for you to enter your zip and hit ENTER. It will then list stores near you and whether the item is in stock. I would still call and confirm since the inventory isn't always right.

Uh, no. The pictures provided by B&N clearly showed the discs as well as mentioned them in the description. It clearly showed the price marked down from the msrp. It clearly states Bargain. One person "claims" they bought a copy without the dvds but there is not a "copycat" release on B&N like this that doesn't include the dvds. If you needed more reassurance than that then you are retarded. It is not like we are dealing with a no-name store or unknown online shop.
As far as the disc not being dvds...who cares. They have every issue of Rolling Stone or the 50's Playboys on them. Read the damn descriptions.

Is anyone else having trouble getting the discs from RS to read in their computer? I've tried several (to put it mildly) times and can't get either the first or second disc to read. Considering that the write-up for the BARGAIN version read (and I quoted this on page 2): ""For the first time ever, own a DVD–based, searchable digital archive containing Playboy magazine's entire groundbreaking first decade--every issue--every page--cover to cover. This exclusive box set also comes with a 224–page companion coffee table book chronicling the behind-the-scenes history of Playboy. Plus as a special bonus--a newly printed reissue is included of the extremely rare first issue, featuring Marilyn Monroe!", no, I don't think any concern was warranted. The pictures showed the disks, the write-up described the disks... I'm not sure how much more assurance was required...

Perhaps we can get off the semantics of dvd's vs. cd's vs. dvd-rom's. The reality is, many of us just got the entire historical archive of Rolling Stone Magazine (whatever its faults) on 4 discs (whatever the heck they are) for under $20. Oh, and a nice coffee table book. And a free 1-year subscription to the magazine. Heck, I didn't even know this set existed until this thread was posted.
And frankly, I would think most of us on this site should be equipped with computers and the like to be able to use the archive discs, whatever their format.

I assumed the very definition of DVD-rom means it is for a computer. Who buys DVD-roms for stand alonge dvd players? Again for the illiterate, go to the description: ... a DVD ROM-based, searchable digital archive of every issue of Rolling Stone magazine from 1967 to 2007. and The product includes the Bondi Reader, powerful MAC or PC browsing software that allows you to explore, search and view every page, and to arrange and save multiple reading lists.
How is that spreading false information? I even put "DVD-roms" in the goddamn title. If I had known I had to stupid-proof every bargain on this board, I wouldn't have posted this one in the first place.

Don't know about RS, but for the Playboy set the answer is no. The publisher, Bondi, has a proprietary reader that is required to view the scans, and the software includes DRM to prevent using Adobe or another software package.

I would go with whatever shows an actual price paid along with the date. I've never ordered from BN but I've received Amazon orders where my packing slip could be viewed as the receipt (price listed) whereas NewEgg.com only list the items included in the shipment and you access your order history at the website to print out an invoice (receipt).

it was weird for me. i received an issue of rolling stone in the mail about a week ago. and i was pissed. i thought they decided to give me a subscription even though i clearly wrote in for a refund.
a few days later, i received another issue. and then two days later i received a third issue (i guess they were sending me past back issues at a quicker rate?) AND my rebate check.
