SORRY, NONE RIGHT NOW!

CURRENT SET SALE (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8710348&postcount=221)

<s>800230 code is BUY 1 GET 1 FREE. </s>Died January 31, 2008.
</tr></table>These codes are working on the cheap DVDs too. Lots of good DVDs for under $5.20.
Here's just a few $5.20 ($2.60 each with code) Paramount Collector's/ Anniversary Editions DVDs: Ghost, Deep Impact, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Clueless, Footloose, Some Kind of Wonderful, Mission: Impossible, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Major League, Save The Last Dance, Witness, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Airplane!<HR><s>CH.com isn't like the normal ColumbiaHouse club, there aren't any enrollment codes.

Just go to: http://www.ch.com/home and sign up. You'll get to pick two DVDs from a short list for $9.95, then you have to at one point in the future over the next year to fulfill. After that point, once you fulfill, the membership is pretty much like going to DVDPlanet or any other normal website. Only now they seemingly accept codes.</s>

As a ch.com Member, you no longer get 40-60% off list price on all DVDs but you still get FREE SHIPPING!

Enrollments titles available at ch.com are the same enrollment titles available at Columbia House.

PLEASE POST ALL TALK ABOUT APPLICATION REJECTION HERE (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=523734), THANKS!
Most of the prices below are no longer that price. I'm leaving the list below so you can compare how they've changed.

Works on all DVDs, even cheap ones! The ones in red, I have already received.

$265.29 for 66 DVDs (I'm upgrading alot of these and selling off the old versions at work to pay for the new ones.)

Great job bigjim25! I was going to start a thread just for the deal, but was afraid a few posters who shall go unnamed would jump all over it and it would just go downhill from there.

Here are the orders I've placed so far:

Sunshine (free)
El Cid Deluxe Edition ($9.98)

Stardust (free)
The Nines ($9.98)

Shoot 'Em Up (free)
Slipstream ($9.98)

3:10 to Yuma (free)
Gandhi 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition (9.98)

Keep the suggestions coming guys, and Peep, you need to post your orders as well. :)

Imagine if this was about a "normal" site like DD, DVDPlanet, and so on. The thread would have hundreds of posts by now.

Great idea starting a new thread!

"Interview" and "Rise" (w/ Lucy Lui) also work as qualifying titles.

re the 30 Rock set for $11.99. It is definitely the season one set pictured & described & not season one vol. one or vol. two. Look at the picture. It says season one & the words are in a light green box. Volume one says season one vol. one & the words are a blue box. Season one vol. two says season one vol. 2 & the words are in a red box.
Also, the season one set has three discs & runs 7:42. Volume one has 2 discs & runs 344 mins & vol. two has one disc & runs 113 mins.

Some of my orders

Bee Movie(free)
Cosby S-3($9.99)

Stargate SG-1 Ark Of Truth(free)
Cosby S-4($9.99)

Bourne Identity Ex. Edition(free)
30 Rock($11.99)

War(free)
Mork & Mindy S-2($17.99)

None of mine have, but I didn't place any orders with items which had asterisks instead of prices. Pretty risky (even if other people bought those same items) if you ask me. If they end up charging you differently than you expect, what kind of proof do you have of the proginal prices? A bunch of asterisks?

Trevor
01-24-08, 03:52 AM
Darn you Jester! I just placed about ten orders, mostly pre-orders combined with the ~$10 titles mentioned.

Strange how some combinations are working and some aren't.

I can't get the Platoon 2 disc to give me anything else free, although it will be free with a higher priced title.

Did I miss a post/thread with any other details?

Also trying to figure out the cheapest way to get those Odd Couple season sets. I can't get anything to make them free, but if buying them for $17.99 can get a pre-order or other non-special club price item free.

I can't get 30 Rock to work as the base selection. I selected it first and the tried to select ACROSS THE UNIVERSE as my freebie, but it charged me full price for both. I tried again using MICHAEL CLAYTON as the freebie, but it still came up as both selections being full-price. What am I doing wrong?

The problem with 30 Rock is that the list price is wrong. ($19.98)
Your freebie will have to be something with a REGULAR price of <$19.98.
Both Michael Clayton and Across the Universe are more than that.

Can someone explain this to me? How are you guys buying something that only costs $9.98 and getting these new release movies for free? Are they really cheap enough to be equal or lesser value to $9.98?

The B1G1 free values are based on the REGULAR price. (It's always this way with CH and ColumbiaHouse as far as I know.)

e.g.
Man From Plains Reg: $22.95 Sale: $9.95
3:10 to Yuma Reg: $22.95 Sale: $17.97

Use the code-- put Man From Plains in your cart first-- you get 3:10 to Yuma for free because $22.95 is less than or equal to $22.95.

Oh, wow. That's a pretty great deal. Thanks for explaining.

I signed up for this last night, so hopefully I get approved soon. The two free DVDs I picked were "The Shawshank Redemption" (10th Anniversary) and "Goodfellas" (Special Edition). Since both of those titles were only released in 2-disc form believe, it seemed like a pretty good deal.

So the question is: What's the $9.95 title that has the highest regular normal price? I'd be nice to score Michael Clayton, etc. as the freebie.

There's lots of different answers: From the list above, you could choose Taxi Driver, It's a Wonderful Life CE, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and I'm sure many others. The three I just mentioned have a regular price of $24.95. I just put Taxi Driver and Michael Clayton in my cart and MC comes up being the freebie.

Never considered joining CH before, but this deal is too good. Anyone know when the code expires?

Also, any suggestions on the what to take as the initial 2 freebies (when paying $9.95 to signup)? Didn't know if there were some good 2-disc sets available or not.

Thanks!

The B1G1 free values are based on the REGULAR price. (It's always this way with CH and ColumbiaHouse as far as I know.)...You are correct. This is one of those longtime quirks of Columbia House that we have been able to use to our advantage in BOGOF deals. ...e.g.
Man From Plains Reg: $22.95 Sale: $9.95
3:10 to Yuma Reg: $22.95 Sale: $17.97

Use the code-- put Man From Plains in your cart first-- you get 3:10 to Yuma for free because $22.95 is less than or equal to $22.95.That was an excellent and helpful answer you gave.

According to the first post, this code will expire January 31. Perhaps there will be other codes to follow. Using codes at CH.com is kind of a new thing...possibly to make up for the fact that CH.com does not offer funcash anymore. Regardless of which, it's a good idea to open up a CH.com account and leave it open for the occasional deal that pops up.

There aren't a whole lot of 2-disc options in the enrollment choices. A previous poster mentioned Shawshank Redemption and Goodfellas. Another that comes to mind when I signed up was 'Bringing Up Baby'

Never considered joining CH before, but this deal is too good. Anyone know when the code expires?

Also, any suggestions on the what to take as the initial 2 freebies (when paying $9.95 to signup)? Didn't know if there were some good 2-disc sets available or not.

Thanks! The enrollments for the CH.com club are very limited. As of September of last year the enrollment list was posted here (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?p=8171443#post8171443) by smashthesymbols.

The list may have changed a bit since then.

Thanks Lizard. Sorry I missed the coupon expiry on the first post. My apologies.

Now I will sign up and try to beat the clock on getting approved and getting in on the deal before it expires!

Anyone know if I can use a Visa gift card to sign up or do you think this would delay approval as it would not be linked to an address.

Thanks again for the help!

I would imagine that could delay things or, most likely, result in a denied application.

I was thinking the same thing. So I signed up using a regular cc and will switch if/when I get approved.

Ended up taking Bringing up Baby and Goodfellas so thanks to all for the recommendations.

BTW, I did make a copy of the list of currently available enrollment titles for those interested.

Here ya' go!

Here's an idea you might want to try: You could always order Eddie Murphy Collection (Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and Trading Places) for $10.40 and get Coming to America or a new release for free (and just sell or give the 2 extra EM movies to someone else). Since Coming to America was $8.24 you could order it with something else.

Can't for the life of me find "Wonderland (2 disc)", only the single-disc version. Is there a trick to finding it?

Also, is that really the 2-disc version of Jerry Maguire they are selling? It's weird that they don't offer the 1-disc and that the MSRP listed is so low. I'd like to get the 2-disc, because it's hard to find, and I already own the 1-disc.

Well they picture the old one. That's the one I got there 3 months ago minus the slipcover. It might just be a misprint(they do that alot). Also as for Jerry Maguire I think the 1 disc is out of print and I also got the 2 disc from there along with the 2 disc Glory (thickbox) a year ago. Both of those have been low in $15 MSRP for awhile just most places haven't lowered them.

That's true, but the old version of Trading Places is in that box set, not the most recent release. Right?

That's not too uncommon. My orders were like that also for awhile, but now they're looking normal on my account page (still in the "outstanding" section, but with the b1g1 amounts). And the charges have started hitting my CC at the correct prices, so it looks like it all should work. Thanks to whoever spotted this.

So I guess I figured out you have to type the code in on the home page as there seems to be nowhere to enter coupon codes in checkout. It shows up at the top of check out as B1G1. However, the prices in checkout don't reflect the deal. It still lists the combined total for me for both DVDs, and I really don't have all that much money in paypal. Thus, I don't want to take a chance on placing an order unless I know the coupon is going to work for me.

Is it doing this for everyone? I hate to take things on blind faith only to have to go thru the hassle of calling and canceling an order later.

I'm not sure where on the homepage you are typing in the code, but what you need to do is to click on the "DVDs 40-60% Off" banner at the top of the page, and then enter the code in the "Enter Your Online Code" box.

The quickest way to kill a deal is for someone to call and ruin it for everyone else.

Well, potentially interesting development...I called Columbia House today, as my 2nd attempt at ch.com membership is still 'pending'...the very nice CSR told me that I had two Columbia House accounts open (in additon to a TV account).
Seems that the 2nd ColHouse acct was opened in late December since I ordered ALOT of stuff last month. She thought that was why I was seeing no ch.com action.
She cancelled that 2nd account (as no activity was on it), and put a note on my account.
She said they check the applications/accounts nightly, and that hopefully, it should go through now. If the pending charge disappears, I should try once more. So...fingers crossed! I want in before Jan 31 ! (And, no, I didn't mention coupon codes, B1G1 etc).

Just when I think I will never spend another penny with Columbia House, they go and do something like this. I think I am at about 15 orders or so. Picked up a lot of dvd that I could never find this cheap.

Most have been mentioned before: The Lord of the Rings titles, the 'Tom Clancy' series (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear & Present Danger), Tommy Boy, Aviator, Top Gun. I'm also interested in several others that I don't have: Blazing Saddles, Big Lebowski, Lean On Me, October Sky, Outbreak, Fletch Lives, Dave, Breakdown. I'm glad I didn't have much else to do tonight other than watch TV and goof off on CH.com for a while. I'm also coming across a few titles I either didn't know that CH carried or I didn't even know about period.

For example, I found Shakes the Clown for $9.98! I mean, it's Bob Goldthwait as an alcoholic party clown. How could that ever go wrong?

On a more serious note though, I found a little flick I had never heard of, Man of the Century, for $10. The reviews for it are pretty solid, and it's a premise that I'm very interested in. The DVDTalk review is "Recommended":

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=4483

It's shot in B/W, about a guy named Johnny Twennies, who is in the modern world but acts like a guy straight out of the 1920's like you've seen in many movies. The list price isn't high enough to get most new releases for free, but it works perfectly to get things like the new Groundhog Day release for free.

Check out Roger Ebert's 3-star review for it:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19991105/REVIEWS/911050304/1023

Federico Fellini's Il Bidone is also $10, and it's usually about twice that everywhere else.

I had the same thing go on. I have an Amazon Visa that I've had since 2003 with a credit limit that has been increased every year or so....

Anyway, I placed about 12 orders, then it cut me off. CH.com said something like, "Your card could not be authorized."

I called visa, easily straightened out....for a little while. After another quick three transactions, locked out again. I told Visa, "Assume that I'm going to have 50 transactions from these guys before the end of the month." They told me they would give me the "maximum access" (I think that just means lowering security levels so that red flags don't go off in the system).

I made another three orders and the exact same thing happened. Discouraged, I called back (third time in 40 minutes or so) and was told the same thing.

Since then, I haven't had any trouble, but I haven't placed that many more orders. I think just the string of orders from single vendor for small amounts looks dubious (and it is! Thank goodness for reuseable coupons!), but I can't speak for Trevor.

Any recommendations for kids? I have a two month old. I have picked up most of the Scholastic DVDs that CH has (Good Night Gorilla, etc.) and a couple movies that I really liked (Iron Giant). For the most part, I'm not going to force him to watch something in particular as he gets older (Veggie Tales, etc.) but I wouldn't mind picking up some more classics with this sale. Suggestions?

luckman65
01-31-08, 02:35 AM
Hey Kory...when you say your bank account is showing the 9.95...as pending transaction, or, as a transaction that's gone through?? I feel like I'm in the same boat as you! What date did you apply the 2nd time?

I called Columbia House and got the 'they're making changes' explanation, but, she hadn't heard anything specific what changes or, really, anything recently on the subject.

Kory

I guess it's technically pending, but this didn't even happen the first time I applied, so hey, I'm making progress.

I applied the second time sometime late (8pm-ish) on the 28th, after calling them and finding out that they had no record of me even applying the first time.

And nobody was helpful with me at all, either time I called. No suggestions, no friendly conversation to maybe talk with me about what was going wrong, nothing. This has been very discouraging so far.

I applied on the 23rd and have not heard anything back. So I assume my request for membership did not get accepted. That's okay, I can live with that.

But... worst case scenario for me would be that now that this sale is over, my membership suddenly becomes activated. The only reason I applied was to take advantage of this sale. If the sale is over, then I don't want to get approved now. If they do approve me now, can I say I changed my mind?

And miss the next sale?

I don't understand not wanting a membership. To fulfill is as cheap as a $5 DVD, and you get two to start for $10, so there is no negative to joining as far as I can see. Just keep it in case they have a deal this good again.

It also bears repeating that with CH.com, there's never any 'monthly director's selections' to accept or decline. And as Trevor mentioned, it's very easy to fulfill the membership by buying a single title. Many, if not all of the $10 titles in the first post aren't bad deals by themselves. Or you can fulfill with a cheaper one. I've never given thought to closing my ch.com account and definitely wouldn't think about it in the future with the hopes of a sale/code like this coming along again!

And not to keep hammering on this point, but I joined with pretty much no intention of really using the account. But wanted one open "just in case."

Well that "just in case" just scored (cost?) me 74 DVDs (most TV sets or two disc releases) for less than $300.

Yep, I've been thinking about a few of those. But I'm not quite at the point where I'd rather have the HD version and an overpriced Criterion for $22 versus the SD version and a TV set for $10.

Just examples, but basically its a $12 or so upgrade decision.

Although those who have cycled through multiple Columbia House accounts, that free SD only has a value of about $5.50. So, subtract that from the price of your HDM and decide if it still seems like a bargain. I'm sure it does to some. Not to me.

I noticed that in moving things in and out of the cart and wishlist, their system sometimes creates duplicates, or puts it in your cart while leaving it your wishlist.

I've been pretty careful, don't think I ordered anything twice. But I definitely did order the regular Bee Movie by accident, and I also probably ordered something(s) that I already own.

Got something weird going on here - anyone else experience something like this?

I placed a bunch orders with this sale/code. Like a few others, got a big tote full of 15 or so boxes a day or two ago. In addition to the ones I received this week, I had placed about 15 orders using the $5.18 titles. A number of those (about 9) had still been 'pending' on my ch.com account when I last looked. Just now I sign into my ch.com account and don't see them on there. But here's where it gets strange...for some reason I decide to log-in to my regular Columbia House account. I see the orders under my 'Outstanding Orders' on that account! But wait, it gets worse...they're listed with each DVD costing $5.18 (no freebies) with tax, shipping, the whole nine yards (fun cash earned as well).

I'm blown away by how this could have happened and what I might be able to do to fix it, if it doesn't take care of itself on its own. I saved all my e-mail confirmations I received from the orders placed. Unfortunately, those didn't include the prices/total. They would only prove the orders were placed 1/30 on my ch.com account instead of on 2/5 as my Columbia House account currently reflects.

I haven't seen any charges officially hit my credit card yet... You can bet I'll have my eye on it pretty closely over the next day or two. Anyone see this with their account(s) both with this sale or ever before?

Trevor
02-07-08, 10:49 AM
Ouch. I think all mine have shipped (except a few pre-orders) and charged the right amount according to the invoices in the packages. Haven't checked my CC statement yet.

I think you'll be ok. If it doesn't sort itself out, you have proof that you ordered it from ch during the code period.

But I guess this is another reminder to all of us to always print our order screen when using codes and columbia house (or ch apparently).

Yeah. I got off the phone and have been pulling my order numbers from my email confirmation to fax back to them, but I have no idea how they are going to sort through this.

I have a normal col. house account, chtv., and ch.com. I received many orders just fine through ch.com

It seems that orders placed after a certain date (maybe they couldn't process the orders until after the coupon expired?) were somehow (???) fed into my col. house and chtv accounts.

The strangest thing is that the orders there don't correspond to the orders that I placed at ch.com.

For instance, say I purchased Family Guy vol. 1 and got DVD A free. Then I purchase Family Guy vol. 2 and got DVD B free. The orders at chtv will show something like:

order #1: family guy vols. 1 and 2
order #2: DVD A and DVD B

Then it charges me as if I placed those orders. That is, I pay the full chtv prices for Family guy 1 and 2, then DVDs A&B.

Obviously, this could be a little bit of a fight. I have the hope that I fax them 50 pages of stuff (I made a ton of orders) and they just can't figure out what to do, so they comp. it. We'll see. I'll let you know what happens... I'm happy that most of you were unaffected, but it would be nice if I didn't have to forge new ground with the CH people. Hopefully this will make it easier for other people with similar problems.

I initially spoke to Melody Johnson, and now I will be faxing stuff to her supervisor Amy Bishop. Do I have time for this shit? Argh....

Keep me posted cgray if you get any kind of immediate response. I haven't had the time to make some calls with the issues to my accounts. Another strange detail is they reflect as orders placed 'by mail' instead of a 'web' order.

Same here. I believe it would help my case out if you called up and talked to the supervisor, telling her that the same thing happened to you. I'm not even totally convinced they believe me at this point. Anyway, the more people that she hears about it from the better mechanism they'll put in place for remedying the problem.

The number that I had called was the help number from the CHTV website: 1-800-262-2001. Supervisor was Amy Bishop.

It may be because they're closing down CH.com, or at least I think. I applied and never got accepted, and I just got a letter yesterday saying the reason they couldn't accept me is because they're shutting down CH.com and it'll now be CHDVD.com or something, and they sent me a forum to sign up for the subscription crap. Made my 1st connection with a live person today concerning the recent fiasco with my Columbia House accounts. I was initially told to return all the movies once they arrived and then to re-order them through ch.com - then after I was put on hold for a bit, she returned to tell me to keep the movies, and send them an e-mail with all the documentation and they'd make an adjustment. This should be interesting.

Got my shipping notice today for the DVDs. Of course, I feel very confident they'll at least refund me all shipping costs associated with the order, since I wouldn't have paid anything for s/h at ch.com. Convincing them that half of the DVDs they're sending me should be free may be a different story. My documentation consists of the other orders I placed that went through fine.

Another irritating problem - my initial ch.com orders were to be sent to my work address (didn't want them exposed to the weather while sitting outside at my house since the large order wouldn't fit in my mailbox and I likely wouldn't be home when they arrived). When the order shifted to my regular account, it changed the order to my home address.

Best case scenario for me would be for them to make the proper adjustment to my credit card AND leave the $36 in funcash the orders earned on my regular account.

If they refuse to honor the b1g1 code/sale, I'll be faced with another dilemma. I've held off buying all these titles for $5.xx, but couldn't pass 'em up when I could get them for less than $3. So do I just send them all back? Hopefully I don't have to make that choice.

Man, this is turning out to be a huge pain...

Per my conversation with an associate on the 12th, I sent a long e-mail outlining my problem. I get a response indicating 'Your items were shipped, please allow up to 4 weeks for them to arrive." I replied asking to read my e-mail again because I wasn't complaining that I hadn't received the DVDs, but rather my ch.com orders had disappeared and reappeared on a different account days later at a higher price.

The latest response: "The terms of our special sale required you to buy one selection at the regular Club price of $19.95 or higher to receive additional selections at our special sale prices. Although we offer different promotions periodically, we are unable to adjust the same unless your order was submitted under a special promotion."

:hscratch:

I'm actually thinking my best recourse might be to contact my credit card company and initiate a charge back. Columbia House is showing I placed a mail order on 2/5 which would be impossible to prove since it never happened. The charges to my credit card were definitely unauthorized. I may wait first to see what happens with your case, cgray. If the supervisor you mentioned comes through, it may be worth my time to make another phone call.

I applied and never got accepted, and I just got a letter yesterday saying the reason they couldn't accept me is because they're shutting down CH.com and it'll now be CHDVD.com or something, and they sent me a forum to sign up for the subscription crap. I'd type up exactly what the letter said, but I blew my nose in it and threw it away.
i got the same letter after i tried a couple of weeks ago. said they were closing down ch.com.

I may wait first to see what happens with your case, cgray. If the supervisor you mentioned comes through, it may be worth my time to make another phone call.

Again, I'm not sure why you wouldn't go this route immediately. You are guaranteed to talk to somebody who is aware of the problem. By talking to her, she becomes aware that it is a bigger problem than just one person, and it therefore more likely to implement a fair and serious plan to resolve those problems. On the other hand, if you do not contact her, you are making it more likely that she will say, "Ah, this is just one customer, so what do we really care? We're closing down ch.com anyway." A negative result for me makes it more likely that there will be a negative result for you, no?

Anyway, that's just the way I see it. If you don't want to call, that's fine. I'm just saying that I think a bandwagon effect would be helpful here.

Completely understand your thinking. Guess my hesitation comes from not wanting to draw 'extra attention' to the b1g1 free code that was discovered to work on the ch.com accounts. It already has been strange to call in with concerns about 9 of my 30 something individual orders. I keep waiting for someone to question how I obtained this code or special sale, since from the beginning it was a sale/code that almost seemed too good to be true. Don't want to find myself 'blacklisted' for abusing something I shouldn't have had access to in the first place. Perhaps I'm thinking too much...

I'll probably proceed with a call to the supervisor. The route I've taken thus far hasn't been successful.

Yeah, I understand. I kind of bit the bullet with that--I think I had 30 orders or so, too... Quite a few of them included the same title (sell one, keep one), so that was awkward. I didn't have problems with all of them, but since it was impossible for me to track which e.g. Taxi Driver was incorrectly sent over to my CHTV account (because, as I stated above, my CH.com orders weren't even carried over 1:1, but had been paired with different orders), I ended up giving them information on every order I had placed through the code. Hope that won't come back to bite me, but looks like CH.com isn't long for the future anyway.
