DVD Talk review of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete Series'

I read Paul Mavis's DVD review of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete Series at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=31609 and...

How can a reviewer, who claims the following: "To be honest, I'm not sure I ever saw a complete episode . . .I may have tuned in once or twice . . .never even caught one of the several episode compilations that series' producers cut into feature length films, that show regularly on TCM"

could also truthfully claim the following: ". . .look far better than you've ever seen them on cable or VHS. And as far as I can tell, all episodes seem to be full length and uncut"?

Well, you didn't quote all of me, but enough is there to give you your answer. I said I may have tuned in once or twice years ago, and that the constant commercials bothered me. And the picture quality was pretty typical of network showings of reruns from over thirty years ago. I don't remember TBS advertising at the time they were running digitally cleaned-up versions of the show. Considering what you wrote, is that what you're saying? That the show looked better on TV, than on DVD, as I wrote? If you are, you're the first person I've heard say that -- everyone else I've read and talked to said they look phenomenal on DVD, and I agree.

As for passing judgement on the transfer qualities on the current set, it's a fair guess on my part to say they look better than what was previously on TV, because the transfers look so sharp and clear, for the most part (some episodes have some grain, but that's to be expected). I've had emails from loyal, dedicated fans of the show, discussing the series and my review, and several mentioned how happy they were with the transfers. I didn't receive any that said they looked worse than VHS or old reruns versions, which seems to be your point of contention. So, I'm going with what I wrote. Unless you have info nobody else has, that these look worse than what showed up on TBS?

As for my contention that they seem uncut, that "seem" is key. I'm not a dedicated fanboy of the series; I don't have total recall on each and every scene from each and every episode, with all episodes timed out. As you partially quoted me, the whole focus of my review was what a revelation U.N.C.L.E. was for me, considering I wasn't really a previous loyal viewer. But after watching all the episodes here, I didn't see anything that looked like something was edited out -- it was all pretty smooth. And the run times fell within the accepted time-outs for network hour-long shows from that period.
