That said, the movie looks extremely derivative (in a bad way)....and could end up being ass.

At the very least, I hope this is a guilty pleasure or hopefully a nice supplement to the R-rated pandemonium of Rambo. And yeah, 28 Days Later-Road Warrior-Escape from New York cross all the way...maybe a bit of Aliens thrown in for the badass chick aspect.

Trailer didn't do a lot for me, but Marshall is (obviously) heavily influenced by Carpenter (just look at The Descent) so it could be a lot of fun. Plus, I asked him at Fear Fest 2 this weekend about Escape From N.Y. having an influence on the film and he said "very much so". Obvious, but that's still a good sign.

I expected a lot more from Neil Marshall, having loved both Dog Soldiers and The Descent. I was excited to see what he could do with a budget, but this movie is uninspired from top to bottom. It is a pastiche of other better films that never reaches the heights of any of them and should have been a LOT more fun than it was...had the tone been slightly different it could have been one hell of a ride...instead of just an exercise in excess for the sake of excess.
The movie starts off as 28 Days later quickly becomes Land of the Dead, then Escape From New York/Mad Max, out of nowhere it apes Excalibur, followed by Gladiator, and then, I shit you not, a fucking car commercial - mountain terrain/hillside shots and all. From car commercial to The Road Warrior and we finish with that mixed with some shots directly from I Am Legend... I had high hopes but even just as mindless entertainment, the movie doesn't work. I hope Neil delivers something better next time out.
You could definitely pair this with 10,000 BC for the ultimate shit sandwich of moviegoing...some terrible movies out right now.

I concur. his was hugely disappointing. Everything from mdc3000 rant is dead on. I actually felt I was watching some grindhouse film; it was all over the place. No character development, no direction (as in where the film was going or saying); just mindless and sad.
There was some bits that were fun-the gore, the over-the-top action scenes, but eh I guess I was expecting more. the trailer makes it look like a Mad Max-type but its more Escape from Scotland than anything else. It's like Umberto Lenzi directed Escape from L.A. haha seriously.

This movie was very good for its genre....it definitely was like a good mid-90s action B-movie, a cross between 28 Days later, Tank Girl, The Road Warrior, Timeline. It was a very exciting movie with great cartoonish characters. I'm all for the return of the Mad Max knock-offs that flooded the 80s to early 90s after being exposed to too many recent CGI action movies...
I love that Scottish Official characters' voice...I think he was in The Departed too? He's got the coolest new voice in Hollywood...Rona Mitra was very good doing a cross between Linda Fiorintino and Sarah Conner...

This is exactly what I expected it to be. A grindhouse film.
A homage to the great post-apocolyptic films of the 80's. If you're going into this film expecting some masterpiece of originality, well you will definitely be disappointed.
But these are the kind of films Neil Marshall makes. The films he loved and grew up on and bringing them into the 21st century.
Go watch your Michael Bay/Roland Emmerich bullshit if you want mindless entertainment.
If this was paired with Planet Terror as a double feature and labeled "Grindhouse" then suddenly everyone would love it.

I saw it and thought it was pretty good, about a three star movie. Its very gory but the film was very tounge in cheek. The action scenes were excellent with their stunwork and crashes (although I wish they would slow down the editing at times). The scenes in between the action really drag on though and feel so superfluous. The acting is nothing to write home about either. Overall though its a good time at the theaters and complements Rambo as some violent old school action schlock.

The movie is a blast! If you are a fan of 80's sci fi/action cinema, you'll luv it! It does everything right that PLANET TERROR did wrong (namely, it doesn't cast QT in a pivotal role) and Rhona Mitra is the new badass, buttkicking heroine to end all badass, buttkicking heroines! (Love the wonderful tribute to THEY CALL HER ONE EYE.) She makes Rose McGowan look like Dakota Fanning.
All in all, DOOMSDAY is a smoking hot smorgasbord of wonderful action packed, gore drenched, feminist sci-fi moments paying homage to some of the most memorable grindhouse flicks of the 80s (THE ROAD WARRIOR, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, KNIGHTRIDERS, etc). Miss it at your own peril.
And any film with Bob Hoskins should be required viewing!

I just got back from seeing and my only real complaint was the movie was several different genres in one movie. It starts out similar to 28 days later, then become post apocalyptic like Mad Max, then mideval flick. But with all that being said its really an old school bloody action flick in spirit of the 80s and early 90s. If you go into this film with the notion of seeing the 3 installment of the recently revival attempt of Grindhouse films, Doomsday kinda works with such a sensibility. We are treated to a mishmash of action-thrillers from the past 40 years or so (fans will have fun identifying them all on DVD later, I suspect), and the narrative scope doesn't pretend to be anything more than it seems on the surface. There are duty-bound protagonists, and over-the-top insane characters for antagonists, with very little shades of grey in between them. Rhona Mitra is game for a B-movie heroine, and her supporting cast is sufficient (though Bob Hoskins' appearance was a surprise, and he provided a bit of grit and gravitas in spots). The guy who played Saul cracked me up, loved his unbridled lack of filters when reacting to situations gone awry.
Director Neil Marshall throws in all sorts of homages, some work, some don't, but the film itself is so tonally awkward as it goes from oneset piece to the next set piece in an attempt to carry forward the plot. But even with such deficiencies in the screenplay, there is quite a bit of fun with all the carnage, violence and action throughout the film. The pacing is actually not too bad, and the 3rd act had me rolling in spots, just good ol' fashion fun action sequences (a la Road Warrior) during the big chase scene.
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

It was fun. Very silly and stupid, but fun. I didn't know that Adrian Lester was going to be in it, so that was a bonus (I'm a fan of his from Hu$tle). Rhona Mitra was good--I've always liked her and I hope she'll do more action movies. Sol was too cartoonish to be very scary. I liked his girlfriend, but they killed her off too soon. Malcolm McDowell was wasted--I thought he was going to wind up being the big threat, but he was on and off the screen very quickly.
I didn't quite like the end. So Rhona Mitra's character goes back to be the leader of the cannibals? WTF?!
But the pace was quick and there were some cool fights and chase scenes, so I was entertained. And they certainly didn't shy away from the gore, did they?

To be honest, it's rare to see a movie that's over 100 minutes long and have it be firing on all cylinders throughout the entire duration. For that, this film easily ranks as my favorite film of the year so far.

I compare Doomsday to last year's Grindhouse. Whereas Grindhouse was a complete homage to seventies exploitation filmmaking, Doomsday does the same for the eighties. On a side note, I also feel Marshall was going for the same tone he did with Dog Soldiers just with more raised stakes and intensified violence/gore.
Any film that can mix 28 Days Later, Escape From New York, Excalibur, Knightriders, Mad Max, The Road Warrior, and The Warriors (amongst others) AND puts it on par with those films easily has to get some recognition by me.
But I still stick by the fact that Funny Games and Diary of the Dead are the worst films I've seen so far this year. Maybe I liked Doomsday more because it didn't try to slap me over the head with (awful and terrible) social commentary. ;)

Just to be thorough, I was using the "you" as plural and referring to the whole forum in my post. You probably knew that Matthew, but I just wanted to be sure. Good reply, but I disagree with a few points.
Grindhouse was a homage to the 70's explotation films, but it aped them in general terms, not specific movies. And even if I'm wrong and it referenced specific movies, very few people know those specific movies, we just know the general idea of the genre.
Doomsday referenced/copied specific well known movies, classics even. But it did it extremely badly, at least in my opinion. :)

Finally got around to this tonight and got just what I expected, only I'm convinced that this and Rambo would be fitting to make up Grindhouse 2.
It's not perfect like No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood, but this movie is a perfect brainless movie. I was smiling from ear to ear at all of the ridiculous action and 80's-ness of it. I loved all the homages: not just Road Warrior and Escape from New York, but I also noticed a lot of other stuff:
Alien - the suits they're wearing upon first going beyond the wall look exactly like the ones in the original.
Aliens - the tank-like vehicles they drive in at the same part resembled the similar ones that the Marines drove in
RoboCop - all of the government scenes: Canaris was Dick Jones with a gravelly British voice
Highlander - the entire part in Kane's compound
Marshall also made damn sure we got some awesome novelty deaths, and this movie was gory as hell. Decapitations, charred people, mutations straight out of Planet Terror, an exploding rabbit, and enough stabbings, shootings, and bloodletting to serve as a side order to Rambo.
Overall, a HUGE blast at the movies. This will hopefully become a cult classic. And Universal should be making this one of their first Blu-ray titles.

I liked it. It was like an hommage to all the great 80's sci-fi flicks.
Things I learned from Doomsday (contains spoilers !)
1) in 30 plus years of research and development, the army will develop foam grenades which expand to fill confined spaces, super capacity rifles, and remote control eye-balls which can pop out of socket and record/monitor enemy acivity while syncing the data to a wrist-watch. They won't however build an APC that has a window which can withstand an arrow from a home-made bow.
2) This may sound like a stereo-type, but all leaders of small clans like to have their captures engage in gladiator style "two men enter, one man leave" battles. You can not make an appocalypse movie without this in the formula !!
3) If a plague ever hits a country it will force man to eat one another, as a source of survival. For some reason that escapes me, they seem to ignore the fields of cows and other sources of meat, which only seem to block military personel.
4) The government likes to build undeground caves and stock pile them with cell phones and Sports Cars. That's our tax dollars put to good use !! Dang you Danny Williams !!
5) Cell phone coverage in the UK is off the hook !! A cell phone can sit an underground bunker for 30 years and still work on the first try. No activation required. No dead batteries. Can you hear me now ?? Good !!
6) The above mentioned sports-cars are also more durable than military APC's. They can withstand multiple collisions and remain in-tact. They can also literally drive through a bus and remain in one peice.
7) If your driving this super -duper sports-car and engaging in street combat, it's always a good option to leave you windows open and let the enemy jump in and attack you. This is the first thing they teach you in covert ops military training.
8) Civilian vehicles not coming from the underground bunkers will not be so durable. They can spontaneously combust for no reason. If you hit a motorcycle, they will fly 50 feet in the air and then explode. Buses will literally crack in half on impact from a compact sedan.
9) Even after a man's fellow country-men have been killed by a plague and have run out of food and reverted to Cannibalism, he will still appreciate hot women in fishnets and coordinated dance numbers !!
10) Hot women that know how to pole dance will always have a place in society
11) Beer will never run out even after 30 yrs of no new deliverys!

Saw this and wasn't a big fan. It was just a bit too silly in too many areas for me to enjoy it. I think the leap to medieval times where the survivors decided not only to live in a castle, but somehow decided they also had to dress like peasants was where it lost me. The car chase where the cars seemed to explode in every crash sealed it for me. Quite a lot of laughs from the audience during those moments over the absurdity of it all :p
I did get a kick out of a lot of the other action in general though, and Rhona kicked some serious ass. I dug her kicking ass a lot more then Milla in the Resident Evil movies. Then again i've had a thing for her since her Tomb Raider days.
For the record i enjoyed Planet Terror quite a bit

--> one of the thugs had smashed the window earlier with a club.
3) If a plague ever hits a country it will force man to eat one another, as a source of survival. For some reason that escapes me, they seem to ignore the fields of cows and other sources of meat, which only seem to block military personel.
--> indeed.
11) Beer will never run out even after 30 yrs of no new deliverys!
--> and he wasted it, they truly are barbarians.

Worst movie of the year so far for me.
Yeah that.
edit - No more intoxicated posts for me.
No real build up or intensity to speak of. Characters were uninteresting. The lead baddie is no Vernon Wells (Wez from Road Warrior) which he apparently was drafted after. If the guy could have said "fuck" 50 more times the film could have been in a running to take down the top spot from the following list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_that_most_frequently_use_the_word_%22fuck%22). What clever scripting. I wish I could say this movie was so bad it's good. I'd rather be forced to watch Beyond the Thunderdome every day for a year before seeing this mess of a film again.
What ever happened to the days where same mindless action films Doomsday is apparently paying homage too were actually good?

I watched the unrated cut on DVD tonight. Wow, what a terrible, poorly executed, trashy mess of a movie...and I can't wait to see it again.

Watched it on Bluray and I really liked it, Lots of fun. a good mindless action movie from the 80's. I also liked seeing a movie that while gory wasnt as mean or sick spirted as most movies now days. Just goofy fun with alot of different ideas scrambled together. It worked for me. The ending could of been better though.

I agree, maingon, the trailer made it look ten times worse, it was so completely disjointed and out there, that with the combined violence and over the topness of it, it was just goofy and ultimately entertaining

I rented this last night and I was really into it on a, "ok, this is a generic post apocalyptic future film with generic(and boring) Punk Rocker people who've taken over some area of the city", level.
Then they made it out to the woods and suddenly there were fuckin' knights and castles! WTF? All of a sudden I found myself FF'ing through the dvd. I wanted to dig this flick but it just didn't do it for me.

I know it's obvious about the castle portion of the film, but everyone did notice the "Gift Shop" and "Emergency Exit" signs around the castle right?
Bought the movie a week or so ago and I actually enjoyed it. Fun film, wish the car chase was a little better. Lots of explosions and run over bodies during that scene but for some reason I thought it could've been better

I didnt realize that Neil Marshall only makes movies starting with D. Dog Soldiers, Descent, Doomsday and soon to be Drive. Weird?

Considering the movie starts off in a fucked up post apocalyptic style setting, I sure as hell didn't expect knights and a castle.

Sure, I guess I shoulda known they would revert back to the days of King Author and Fuckin' Braveheart.
Castles in Scotland or not Doomsday sucked balls from the first appearance of the Knight on horseback.
Hell, Reign of Fire had castles in a futuristic world but it was tons better than Doomsday.

Doomsday does to the post-apocalyptic action/sci-fi genre what Land of the Dead did to Romero's Dead series. I suppose some enjoyment might be found (and I was searching), but it's a thoroughly weak and forgettable entry to the field.
Even the psychotics sucked. At least a decent villain can make a film more interesting.

I coudn't get into this flick. At first it had me all the way to the hospital sequence which was very well done. But then it just started to fall appart.
Like other mentioned, before they get to the hospital we see what appears to be hundreds of cows. Why would anyone give into cannibalism if there's a huge supply of fresh livestock? I didn't mind the Mad Max 2-lite gangs (and the party sequence was all kinds of fun) but the cannibal angle made little sense. And how did that one guy feed all those cannibals? And weren't they gonna eat him rare?
The medieval stuff I actually found amusing. Cut off from civilization they reverted to a medieval way of life. It works as long as you don't realize they haven't been cut off from civilization long enough for anyone to buy into such a lifestyle. Malcom McDowell would have to be playing his own character's great-great-great-great-grandson for that to be believable. And why didn't Rhona use her gun when her friend was being shot by arrows. She was close enough and had a clear enough line of fire to nail each of their attackers in the bunker?
Even though the final chase was pretty much stolen (I know they'd probably preffer to call it a homage than actual theft) from Mad Max 2 but I couldn't help but enjoy that part.
In the end, it's as if Neil Marshall had all these ideas from different unfinished scripts and put them in a blender. However, instead of a delightful mish-mash of genres, it was a mostly nonsensical mess. :(
Hopefully his next film has is of the same quality as The Descent.

My 3-star Netflix write-up, emulating the speech patterns of a 14 year old kid whacked-up on goofballs:
"TRIUMPHANTLY AWFUL! This movie has every action film cliche/ripoff you can think of! But hilarious! Think Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, minus the satire! Unintentionally the best comedy ever! OMG!"
