In the tradition of Snakes on a Plane and The Simpsons Movie prediction threads, what are everyone's thoughts on opening weekend and total gross for Cloverfield?

I say:

35 mil opening weekend

115 mil total

I think you're in the ballpark...I would go a little lower. Maybe $26 million opening; $85 million total domestic.

yeah, i don't think this will be as big as it thinks it will be. the whole guerrilla style shooting is played out and this type of movie screams smooth and clean shots, at least for my taste anyway.
$25-28 mil. just bc it will play in a million theaters on a million screens and then pitter out to roughly $50-60 mil.

It going to be bitterly cold in much of the midwest with some possible heavy storms in the Northeast....so I'm going on the lower end and saying 32.5 million.

I'm going to go out there and say that since there has not been a big blockbuster movie in about a month, and that this one seems to be getting a lot of pre-release hype, I'm guessing that this could break the record for biggest all-time January opening. My guess:

Opening: $48 million
Domestic Total: $120 million

The football games will take some away, plus the JJ Abrams tag does not really mean anything in Box Office terms... $18-23 mill.

I have yet to find anyone interested in this at work, and they are generally a movie hungry crowd.

Well, if Big Momma's House 2 can score a $27 million opening during its January debut, I don't see why Cloverfield can't top that. $29.5 million.

Either 15 million or 50 million.

I'm guessing a $30 million weekend, or thereabout. It'll open strong on Friday and probably drop off by about half on Saturday and be very slow Sunday thanks to 2 big NFL games.

I just have a feeling the marketing is only going to draw people in to see this once and very early, and once the secrets/plot are out, it's going to sink like a stone.

Either 15 million or 50 million.

That might be the best answer! I got a question today from a friend at work who isn't ignorant when it comes to upcoming films, he just doesn't spend his free time trolling film forums, and he honestly asked, "What's it about?"

My response: "Its about a giant Godzilla like creature that attacks New York City, filmed hand-held style"

Him: "Like the Blair Witch?"
Me: "Sorta, yeah"
Him: "That sounds dumb."

Its been a clever marketing strategy, but the question is whether its shown "enough" to get people interested enough to pay at the box office for it.

I'd say a 25 ml opening weekend and maybe 115 million domestic.

There are people I work with that are normally so clueless about movies but each time I mention Cloverfield they all seem intrigued by the whole concept and marketing campaign.

It's hard to gauge at my work, considering everyone's into movies and is eagerly anticipating it. Don't know what the average movie-goer thinks... Should do more than enough to cover it's budget though...and hopefully give us another one.

$18M $65M gross. Much better on home video.

Well, if this was the "how much does it make on opening day" thread you would have won.

Cloverfield pulled in $18.5 million on Friday alone.

Looks like pretty much everyone but me & opne or two others were pretty off the mark on this one.

I'm thrilled to be off about this one. :) I've had a number of people at work come up to me and ask how the movie was. One kid who works for me asked me a ton of questions about the film and finally someone told him to just shut up, pay the 7.00 and see the movie. I told him that seem liked the right thing to do.

Looks like a $41 million opening weekend which sets a new record.

Judging from the very mixed response it's received on various message boards and real life theatres, I think it'll top out at $110M at most. It helps that this time of year is a wasteland when it comes to new movies.

I'd say it hits $130M total. Maybe a little more, but not much less.
