Saw this and thought this was really interesting. I liked Paris, je t'aime and can't wait to see how they do New York. As of now Spike Lee is not attached but I cannot see how this is possible. If there is any director that I would want on this project it would be Lee.
Directors attached:
*Joshua Marston ("Maria Full of Grace", Tv's "Six Feet Under")
*Fatih Akin ("Auf der anderen Seite(On the Other Side)")
*Zach Braff ("Garden State")
*The Hughes Brothers ("From Hell", "Dead Presidents")
*Wen Jiang ("Warriors of Heaven and Earth", "The Sun Also Rises")
*Yvan Attal ("My Wife Is an Actress")
*Anthony Minghella ("Cold Mountain", "The Talented Mr. Ripley", "The English Patient")
*Mira Nair ("Monsoon Wedding", "Salaam Bombay!", "Vanity Fair", "The Namesake")
*Chan-wook Park ("Oldboy", "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance", "Lady Vengeance")
*Brett Ratner (Rush Hour Trilogy, "Red Dragon", "The Family Man", "X-Men: The Last Stand")
*Andrei Zvyagintsev ("Izgnanie", "Vozvrashcheniye (The Return)"
*Scarlett Johansson (Directorial Debut)
here is a little bit more from /film.com about the project:
"The severe void of female directors in Hollywood needs to cease, so maybe actresses with the urge like Drew Barrymore and now Scarlett Johansson can be a catalyst. Johansson, a New Yorker, is attached to direct one of the twelve short films that will make up New York, I Love You, a bookend to the recent swooning hit Paris, je t’aime. Like dirty pigeons flocking together to form a feathery heart, the shorts will take a look at “the universal theme of encountering love within the five boroughs of New York City.” And if you haven’t yet confessed your love to a semi-stranger in one of the city’s many dark rooms while under the influence, you’ve got a fun homework assignment for Monday.
While Woody Allen won’t direct a segment, he’s Woody Allen and can help where he wants. I was surprised to see that some of New York’s finest like Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, and Jim Jarmusch won’t be contributing, nor will wildman Abel Ferrara. But it makes sense that a guy nicknamed The Rat will direct aka Brett Ratner. And Zach Braff is there to lend some [chortle] indie cred. Williamsburg calls, Zach. And where’s that mumblecore dude? Interesting choices include the Hughes Brothers, Old Boy’s Chan-wook Park and The English Patient’s Anthony Minghella."
Overall I think they got a pretty great selection of directors for this.

Paris, je t'aime was very good and the concept was great. Doing another one simply based on a different city feels too forced. I'm not liking most of the directors listed as well.
I'll just watch Woody Allen's, Scorsese's or Spike Lee's films if I want to view someone's love affair with the city of New York.

They should just get Woody Allen's permission to stick the opening to "Manhattan" at the beginning. You won't get much more perfect than that.
Get Martin Scorsese to do a piece, and I'm in. Nobody does New York on film like he can.

I'm happy to see different directors. We have already seen directors like Scorsese do New York many many times.

Perhaps Scorsese and Allen opted out since they contributed to New York Stories 18 years ago.

Sure, it would be nice to see a short from Andrei Zvyagintsev (The Banishment was excellent), but Brett Ratner is on my shit list.
Perhaps a well timed trip to the bathroom...

it's stupid to reiterize what's been said about him, but yes Ratner is a hack... shit why don't they just ask Uwe Boll ;) and yes, Zach Braff as a director IS overrated.
I'd ask director's
Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart)
Julia Loktev (Day Night Day Night)
I'd also love to see what an urban NYC tale would look like from David Gordon Green

I know Natalie Portman is directing one of the shorts now so maybe she took over Mingellas's short film or maybe it's a different one.

Oh and Anthony Mignella has since passed. Did he ever finish up his sequence?
From what I've read, production started around the time of his death.
However, he is still credited as a writer on the project. The question then is, who directed the short he was set to write/direct.

From imdb:
"The segment "Upper East Side" was to have been directed by Anthony Minghella who passed away shortly before its filming. Anthony himself asked Shekhar Kapur to replace him in their last conversation. After Anthony's death, Shekhar wrote in his blog, "I will direct the film now - with Anthony in my heart and in presence of his soul."

I think it would be amazing if the followed it up with "Los Angeles, I hate you." And just told stories of how fucked up the city is. And got guys like shane black, tarantino, smith, paul thomas anderson, mamet, coen bros, etc.
As for New York, I love you. Ehh, rental maybe. This feels very poser to me. Zach Braff, Brett Ratner, Scarlet Johnanson. Ehh, the last one had so many better directors. Alfonso cuaron, the coen brothers, alexander payne, gus van sant, etc.
It seems like their doing a film about how they all love new york by people who all live in L.A. If they got allen, jarmusch, coppola, di nero or scorsese it might have a little more credability.
The only one I'm interested in is chan wook park.

From slashfilm (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/09/12/jerusalem-i-love-you/): ....Someone told me that the producers of New York, I Love You revealed during the question and answer session that they already have two more films in the works for what they are referring to as the “Cities of Love franchise.” The next film in the series will be called Shanghai, I Love You, and is intended to coincide with the World Expo in 2010. The fourth film will take place in Jerusalem, and will probably be released in 2011 or 2012.

I caught a viewing at TIFF and I thought it was decent - I preferred Paris, je t'aime though.
Some vignettes worked better than others. There was more humor than in Paris, je t'aime - nothing gut-busting but got a few chuckles out of me (one thing I hate about filmfest crowds is they want to love a film so badly that they'll burst out in laughter at the smallest amounts of humor).
The weakest vignette was starring Kevin Bacon. Nothing really happened and it just felt like a forced attempt to be artistic. Found out after the viewing that Scarlett Johanssen directed this one. She should just stick to acting - and even there she needs some lessons. The best vignettes I thought the ones with Shia/Julie Christie, Hawke/Maggie Q, and Leachman/Wallach.
Overall I felt that Paris, je t'aime better represented the stories of love between characters and love of the city. I also thought that Paris was shot better as well - giving it a warmer feel that added to the texture of the film. NY ILU was shot using an HD camera which I am personally not a fan of (especially in the darker scenes).

I saw it and liked it at about the same level as Paris Je Taime. I did feel that New York had fewer duds. This one has more of an overall flow with a few segments transitioning into the next segment. It was tense watching it as a film snob because they didn't reveal the directors of the segments until the end. I was scared that I would fall in love with the Bret Rattner one without knowing. His is fine, actually. It has some humor and a clever twist. It probably helped that he didn't write it.
I agree with the poster above that the Scarlett Johanssen one was the worst. It ends with a LONG shot of Kevin Bacon eating a hot dog. I also didn't like the first one with Natalie Portman negotiating a price for diamonds.
Someone should give Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman a full length movie with their characters.

Looks like we wont be getting the Johanson short in the film after all:
from IMDB:
"Johansson's Directorial Debut Is Dumped
2 May 2009 6:55 AM, PDT
Scarlett Johansson has suffered a major blow to her dreams of becoming a director - the film segment she shot for a new movie has been cut from the final version.
The 24-year-old was among a number of stars, including fellow actress Natalie Portman, who took part in making upcoming film New York, I Love You - which is a series of love stories all shot by different directors.
But Johansson's contribution, her directorial debut, has been edited out, with producer Emmanuel Benbihy insisting the short was too "conceptualised" to fit in with the rest of the picture.
He tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "The story did not specifically involve an interpersonal relationship, and it was conceptualised to be filmed in black and white - both of which were extreme departures from the other films.
"Scarlett presented me with an extremely compelling, albeit unconventional, narrative that appeared as though it would not necessarily conform to the overall approach of the entire collective.
"I was very much moved by her vision (but) after months of editing I had to admit that there were editorial decisions to be made in the interest of serving the overall narrative and composition that resulted in previously filmed scenes and footage not getting used."

General consensus regardless was that it was shit (most early reviews point this fact out) and that it stopped the film dead in it's tracks.
 to the producers dropping the dead weight for the second go-around. Wish they could've done that for a few of the shorts in Paris.
I'm pretty sure the short will end up on the DVD and Blu.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/05/14/new-york-i-love-you-in-october/#more-28226
"Vivendi Entertainment will finally set a October 16th 2009 release date the anthology film project New York, I Love You. The movie is the next film from the producers of Paris, je t’aime, and features another anthology of short films, this time focusing on the stories of love in New York’s five boroughs.
The film includes short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film’s ensemble cast includes: Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.
The film screened as a work in progress at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, and was originally expected to hit theaters in mid-February 2009. We posted a teaser trailer last August. Scarlett Johansson’s directorial effort starring Kevin Bacon didn’t make the final cut, but will be included on the DVD alongside Andrei Zvyagintsev’s segment starring Carla Gugino and Goran Visnjic, which was also edited out of the theatrical version.
Future installments of the “Cities of Love” series are being planned for Shanghai, Rio de Jainero, Berlin and Jerusalem. "
