edit: Not a re-release, just a release of the remake that almost no one knew about.

Actually, I feel like a fool now. These releases are actually for a remake that also featured Michael Cain and also Jude Law and was directed by Kenneth Branagh. Apparently this got a limited (very limited)release back in October of 07. So this looks now like a straigh to dvd feature. My bad!

Please mods, change the title of the thread to indicate that this is the remake not a re-release.

I caught this during its limited run and had mixed feelings -- may give it a second viewing on DVD though.

It's about as straight to DVD as The Assassination of Jesse James, Lust, Caution or a dozen under movies in the past few months that never got a wide release.

The original version with Caine (in the Law role) and Laurence Olivier (in the Caine role) is much better but sadly OOP and tough to find. It could definitely use a Special Edition re-release, but with the remake bombing theatrically as bad as it did, I doubt we'll see it any time soon. It's another of those Anchor Bay OOP releases that seems to have vanished into DVD limbo.

^^ I agree. I really liked the original and would love a SE. I'm not interested in the remake in the least.
