I'm gonna have some different choices, but I know that these were the albums I listened to more than any others in their respective years of release. And no matter what anybody says, I'll stand by these as all being solid albums.

1992 : The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
1993 : Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Sister Sweetly - Tough call, a LOT of good music that year!

1995 : Deep Blue Something - Home - Another very tough year to call.
1996 : Semisonic - Great Divide
1997 : Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind

I was almost going to go with STP - core, too. In fact, I want to change my vote to a tie. I agree with your last statement, too, except I'd swap '91 for '97. 1993 and 1995 were two completely exceptional years for music.

Thanks. Good idea on the Deadsy. They're such an awesome, vastly underrated group. They have a wealth of unreleased material that I've been playing over lately. So much good stuff that will, sadly, probably never see an official release.

I did something like search "top albums of 19XX" in Google and the result was invariable something at rateyourmusic.com. Usually you get a list of 25 albums or so but those lists are pretty good.

1999 was an incredible year for music and film. Maybe not the best year in quality, but I think the (to crib Tricky's phrase) pre-millenium tension had artists come out the woodwork and try and do something.

Wow, this is where it gets really really tough. Of the appox. 650 albums I own, roughly a third were released between 1991 and 1995. But I'm gonna try to limit myself to no more than 3 albums per year.

1991 : Soundgarden — Badmotorfinger / Pearl Jam - Ten / Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog (tie)
1992 : Alice In Chains — Dirt / Various Artists - Singles Soundtrack / Stone Temple Pilots - Core (tie)
1993 : Smashing Pumpkins — Siamese Dream / Counting Crows - August and Everything After / Nirvana - In Utero (tie)
1994 : Live — Throwing Copper / Pearl Jam - Vitology / Nirvana - Unplugged / Soundgarden - Superunknown (tie) ok, it's 4 for this year.
1995 : Mad Season — Above / Pink Floyd - Pulse / The Presidents of the United States of America - Self Titled (tie)
1996 : Alice In Chains — Unplugged / Sublime - Sublime (tie)
1997 : Everclear — So Much for the Afterglow / Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape (tie)

Both excellent choices, as well. I'd also add Bush - Sixteen Stone to the list for '94 - as it came out very late that year, but really didn't "hit" until '95.

Just for laughs and similarity sake, here's some of my other back up choices from '95 to '98

I spent more time on 1990 than on the others combined and still couldn't find a thing.

Most of this looks like what other people have posted, but these are my favorites.

1993 & 1997 were brutal because of the number of great releases.

Here it goes. Taken from a sorting of my iTunes list - if the years are wrong ... too bad :) And I had to fudge and put 2 or 3 for some years. If you want to get technical, you can look at the first album I list as my favorite.

1990 : Cocteau Twins — Heaven or Las Vegas, Concrete Blonde — Bloodletting
1991 : Tori Amos — Little Earthquakes, Nirvana — Nevermind (too many things I love this year - tough to leave off Ten, or Achtung Baby, or Badmotorfinger, and many others)
1992 : REM — Automatic for the People
1993 : Smashing Pumpkins — Siamese Dream, Belly — Star
1994 : Soundgarden — Superunknown, Hole — Live Through This
1995 : Oasis — What's the Story (Morning Glory)
1996 : Pearl Jam — No Code (weak year for me)
