I tried Google, but no luck.

Purely a guess, but I would think like "voight" in that the 'g' is silent. So I guess it sounds like "Vot".

I have a friend whose last name is "Vogt" and she pronounces it "Vote"... which was a surprise to me.

Sadly, no. Just curious. I had always pronounced it "vote", since it's a Dutch name and Dutch likes silent G. Unfortunately the answers have disturbed my neat little world. Oh well, learning is good
