Pineapple Express (David Gordon Green, 2008)

IMDB

Starring Seth Rogen & James Franco. Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by... David Gordon Green? Really? The same guy that did George Washington? Doing a stoner comedy? Color me intrigued.

I saw this on a lot of can't-wait-for-2008 lists and thought this deserved its own thread.

I hope this absolutely bombs and DGG goes back to directing good films again. His last one, Snow Angels, can't even find a distributor, but this junk gets fast-tracked to theaters... Sad.

Or... he finds a new audience (or fame) and manages to do both.

He's probably making this so he can make those films you like. If Snow Angels finds a distributor you can probably thank this film.

And if this bombs, his career in Hollywood may be more than over as he couldn't successfully open a film written by Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen.

[The same could be said about Jake Kasdan and Walk Hard, but I blame that on Sony's terrible advertising and just too many films competing in the same holiday season for an R-rated comedy to take off.]

Wow. David Gordon Green doing an Apatow/Rogen film. It sorta combines my two favorite kinds of movies crude vulgar comedies and character driven indie flicks. DGG is one of my favorite directors and I'll support anything he puts out.

Early word from sneak previews have been very positive. Though I'm not sure holding it for a Summer '08 release is good move - the movie's ready now - there's little reason to keep it until a crowded Summer. They should release it sooner, so it'll get more attention - small fish in a small pond instead of small fish in a big pond.

I guess I'm in the minority. If that five minutes is any indication of the rest of the movie, I'll pass. They got the "stoner" part right, now they just need the "comedy".

Clip wasn't all too impressive. But I like the plot outline. IMDB reads, "A stoner (Rogen) and his dealer (Franco) are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder." I'd really like to see it play [relatively] straight.

And I hope he doesn't muck up a Rogen/Apatow script, because I don't think DGG is that great of a director.

I'm with you. When I watched it the first time on the Superbad dvd, I was wondering why they would use such a dull clip to promote the movie.

Apatow, Green, Rogen....enough for me to see Pineapple Express in the movie theatre vs. my home theatre.

Really, Gordon Green is talented

Apatow needs someone to tell him not everything he touches is golden. Dude needs a break, I think.

The clip did not grab me. Though having Green in the mix definitely sparks my curiosity.

The disappointing numbers for "Walk Hard" kinda show that, but then again, it's not like Apatow is a stranger to commercial failure. People seem to forget that he had a hit-or-miss career before "40 Year Old Virgin."

Rough cut of the red band trailer.

I wasn't too excited for the film with the clip on the Superbad DVD, but after that trailer, I'm all in.

This movie looks like it's going to be fucking awesome. Apatow humor mixed in with the cinematic stylings of Green. The two minutes of that trailer had better cinematography than all of Apatow's past outings up to this point combined.

Same here, that trailer was great.
