Need more info on 48 Hour Self Destructing DVD rental
I remember a few years back when Disney had announced a dvd that was vaccum packed and after it was opened you had 48 hours before the dvd had a chemical reaction making it usesless. I found a article at http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/orei...edvd_0903.html that talks about it, though the search engine here did not find the old thread.
Fast forward to today. I was driving through Arkansas from TX to TN and saw some new titles like Number 23 and Gracie, along with The classic Halloween film at a truck stop for 4.99 using the same premise. I didn't purchase any of them, but wanted to see if i could find a website to see what titles had been put out. For the life of me, I can't recall what these dvds called themselves.
Any info, or have you seen them at truck stops or anywhere else?

Here are the links to TWO different threads from 2003, when they made their debut:

Didn't know these were making a comeback- I know they were trying them out in Japan last year. I bought 2 "Noel" discs from an Ebay seller (one to watch and do other things with, the other to keep sealed), here's the trailer that plays at the beginning of it:
<embed style="width:500px; height:426px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=8141765775397029635&hl=en" flashvars=""> </embed>
There's an obvious workaround for the 'self-destructing' part that I thought would've made them give up on it. I'm gonna have to find some of these New Line titles, are they for sale anywhere in CA? I collect relics of failed technology; I've also got about 15 DIVX discs I bought when they were clearing them out cheap. $4.99 is still WAY too much for a limited-play disc, especially for something as old as "Halloween", since you can get regular DVDs for about the same price or less.

I'm not a truck driver, but I can see why these discs would be nice. If you're driving a rig across the country, you don't want the clutter of buying DVDs to keep, and you don't want to have to return the disc to a rental place, so this is good for that market.

i travel a lot in Oklahoma and Texas. all the LOVE'S truck stops have them.
but this company sounds useless- most of the time, you get 2-3 choices at most, and they're not brand new releases. saw Texas Chainsaw- The Beginning just the other day at one.
Here's how dumb the company is, they tell you how the process works, it's exposure to oxygen.
Now all a person has to do is export these babies to Venus, and you'd make a killing.

You know what I'm trying to figure out? If this company makes a profit by selling DVDs for $4.99 each that self destruct, why do regular DVDs have to be priced so much higher to earn a profit? Surely they don't think the same truck driver is going to keep buying Texas Chainsaw-The Beginning and keep throwing it away?
