Not only was this my favorite mini-series from last year (funny how every little thing gets collected in a trade in just a matter of weeks, while my very favorite series took over a year), I'd put it up there as one of my favorite books of all time, up there with Watchmen and any other comic deconstruction.

It pretty much has the most perfect ending I've ever seen in a comic book - get it for yourself, and for anyone who likes a great story, that's exceptionally told.

The escapists was brilliant. Simply brilliant. One of the best comics in recent years. Probably my favorite miniseries in the last decade.

While I LOVED the escapists it isn't quite my favorite mini of the last few years. That honor belongs to this title, recently released in a fantastic hardcover:



It was one of the free comics my store occasionally drops in my box that they think I'll enjoy reading and it is still my favorite recent comic (I don't see anything overtaking it anytime soon).

Thanks for the recommendation on the Escapists. I picked up the first couple of issues of the Escapist (no S) when Dark Horse started publishing and I found it mediocre. But this seems to be a little different -- I'll definitely have to check it out.

No. This was a whole new mini-series written by Brian K. Vaughn (Y The Last Man, Ex Machina, etc.) about a kid starting his own Escapist comic book.

Its my favorite mini from the past several years. It is about a super hero that finds out his powers are destroying him. It is about how he spends his remaining days attempting to fix the things he regrets and coming to terms with the problems in his past caused by his powers.

Just the only, ever, faithful adaptation of War of the Worlds and get this! The sequels which are fucking brilliant.

He's one of the few who I could tolerate such smugness from. He's earned it IMO. I love The Escapists. Did anyone check out his one shot story for Midnighter #7? Midnighter is a Batman like character who can see every possible situation and what probability the event will occur making him a bad-ass. The story is told backwards to give the reader a perception of what it's like to be The Midnighter. It was funny and very cool.

edit- Also another from my favorite team. A stand alone story that you think you see where it's going. Well, I was surprised at the ending.



edit- Another nice thing about the Edgington/ D'Israeli books is that non-comics fans might be impressed by the fact that they are hardbound volumes and they go for less than most soft cover trades (15 bucks). These are my favorites of at least the last five years.

Absolutely - he's still pretty young too, and if he doesn't burn himself out (he has been spread a little thin), he could even eclipse Alan Moore.
And I think that smug look in that picture is a bit of sarcasm.

please no one recomend Watchmen and Dark Knight. non-comic fans are not going to get them and will not try reading comics again. Walking Dead or Sandman would be a good start.

I understand what you're saying, and your experience my be so, but I know plenty of non-comic fans that read and loved both Watchmen and Dark Knight, so YMMV.

Well if you're talking non-comic fan females, outside of maybe Strangers in Paradise, or Sandman if she's a goth, there's not much to recommend - maybe Persepolis or Bone, certainly not Walking Dead.
