So I'm playing in my first poker game with my new father-in-law tonight. I know the basics of poker itself, but don't know many of the variations. I know that they don't play Hold 'Em... which unfortunately is what I have the most experience on.
The game itself is dealer choice, and the buy-in is $100.
So, any tips for a first timer?
I don't think these guys are too hard-core about it, so I'm not too worried.

Do they play draw or stud? I would imagine they probably play 7 card stud or Omaha.
If you are first timer, play only superior hands. I have routinely clocked my FIL (it helps he's a major straight/flush chaser) when we play. Poker isn't about making friends.

Apparently it's dealer choice. My boss told me to suggest Indian Poker.

If it's dealer's choice, then I suggest 7 card stud, it's the closest you'll get to hold em.

In which case I'll need to learn about 7 card stud. :)

Expect to have to keep track of a bunch of wild cards.

Dealer's choice, eh?
Fortunately it's not a Tuesday. Just remember that if you get dealt two Jacks, you'll want a Queen and a Four, because you're playing at night. And hopefully you can avoid the third Jack, because getting a shralk in your first game with your father-in-law could be most embarrassing. Have fun!

Tips? If in doubt, fold. The less expensive mistake to make for a beginner.
As for games, just listen to what others are calling and mimick. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

I forgot to post an update. Poker night turned out really good. They played no wild cards and don't particularly like Texas Hold'em type games... though I called Omaha once and they didn't mind. They do have a bunch of strange games that they play. One that I liked was called 5.5 and 21. It is a low/high game where you have 1 face down card and get dealt additional cards one at a time if you want. Face cards are .5 point. Ace can be 1 or 11. After everyone gets all the cards they want (with betting between each card) then you declare high or low and there is one more round of betting. They had very good rules about max raises ($2 raise up to $8 max) and we used chip values of $0.25, $1, and $5.
Anyway, I came out of it about $50 ahead, $10 of which I tipped the host (my father in-law). I'm anticipating the next poker night when the gloves will undoubtedly come off.

Never seen 5.5-21, but 7-27 and 2-22 are both common at home games. Of course, it's not actually poker, but ... I digress.
At least they didn't play guts.

They did play guts... but I don't recall what it was... I think it was just straight 5 card stud.
They played one where a low diamond in the hole would split the pot.
If the pot was split then any of the non-winning players in that final round of betting would have to match the pot. Luckily that never happened... at least not to me.
I was also glad because it was a straight money night. I was afraid that only the top 2 or 3 people would walk away with a portion of the original pot... which of course would have meant I would walk away with the top spot... but in the beginning of the night I didn't know that.

Buy some good books like Super System 1 and 2 by Doyle Brunson. I have read both. well worth the investment. Play poker like the pros is good also.
