"Once" : A good blind buy?
Would anyone recommend "Once" as a blind buy? I've heard such great things about it.

If you like music, then I'd say you'd like it.
If you like "lo-fi" movies (it looks like it was shot on VHS), you'd like it.
If you have ever loved anyone, I'd say you'd like it.

You got that right Broseph. I have a date coming over tomorrow for drinks and to watch this. It's $16.99 at Target. To answer Daytripper's question....it's for sure a great blind buy, IMHO.

My real question is if there would have been any reason for John Carney to shoot the film at 25fps, and how a person would find that out? On the imdb message boards there are a few complaints that the songs are pitched down from the CD.

I first heard the soundtrack, and fell in love with it, so I wanted to see the film, and then I fell in love with that. Charming little picture.
And you can hear the soundtrack, which is streaming in it's entirety, for free, at the official website:

OK, bought it and just watched it. Wow wow wow. What a beautiful little film. I don't know how to describe it. But it just soars. Whoever compared the music to Dave Matthews. Sorry, but no. I like Dave. But not even close. I can't tell you the last time I watch a movie that made me smile and break my heart at the same time.

This film is just yet another example of a film not needing to cost an arm and a leg with huge special effects to be a truly great picture. This one didn't cost hardly anything at all to produce in terms of normal budgets (I know it was less than a million, and likely closer to 100k or so), yet it presented an emotion rarely caught on film in this day and age.

I didn't dislike it by any means, but I can't say I was overjoyed that I blind bought it and I can't see recommending it to anyone else I know. My wife is a sucker for just about any kind of romantic movie and this one was lost on her as well. I can't say I blame her since it didn't completely work for me, either.

I plan on giving it another try sometime. I probably wasn't in the mood for it or something. I couldn't even get through the first 30 minutes. I didn't find that guy screaming a song out on the street engaging at all.
For that alone I'd say rent it first. I'm not saying it's a bad movie at all or anything since I didn't even watch the whole thing.
