Regis Philbin's "Million Dollar Password" debuts Sunday June 1st at 8pm!

CBS has ordered six episodes of "Million Dollar Password," a "modernized version" of the long-running game show "Password," in which contestants try to guess a hidden word through synonym clues. The grand prize will be $1 million. Philbin will host the new show.

CBS said "Million Dollar Password" would air at midseason. It will tape in New York so Philbin can continue his hosting duties on "Live With Regis and Kelly."

Million Dollar Password follows in the footsteps of the classic game show Password with a new twist.
How it Works:
Two teams, each made up of one celebrity and one contestant, go head to head to guess clues to a secret password. The password is revealed to the studio audience and viewers at home, so we can play along. Teams have a pre-determined amount of time to make their guesses before the turn is passed to the opposing team. Points are scored with each correct answer, and at the end of the round the team with the most points is given the chance to move on.

In the final round, the winning team can choose to keep their winnings and walk away, or risk it all in a fast-paced guessing game that could lead them to win a cool million dollars.

I still miss Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Why did ABC have to drive it into the ground?

Game Show Host: This one is for Peter Griffin and Tony Randall.
Game Show Announcer: The password is... flaming.
Peter Griffin: You...
Tony Randall: Actor.
Peter Griffin: You...
Tony Randall: Tony?
Peter Griffin: You...

Ugh, I hate Password. Most of the fun of a game show is being able to play along. Password breaks this cardinal rule by showing you the word and saying it ahead of time.

Heh, when I want to play along I shield my eyes and press the mute button when the word is given.

I love Super Password with Bert Convy, it's still my favorite game show of all time. I guess Regis as host would be better than some 3rd rate comedian.

I normally don't like game shows I can't play along with... unless they change the format, you can't play along .. they give you the answer upfront. I'll tune in to see what it's all about but I probably won't stick with it.

Betty White (Alan Lunden's wife) was also a very good player.

ETA: I skimmed past Drexl's post... I totally agree.

You can always cover up the bottom of the screen to avoid seeing the password.

I kind of like trying to come up with the best clue myself when watching Password.

Here's how it'll work:

[5 minutes of idle chatter with the host]
Contestant: [gives clue]
[5 more minutes of idle chatter]
Celebrity: I think I know what it is...but you'll have to wait to hear my guess until...AFTER THE BREAK!
Audience: Groan

I'll watch this if:

1. They don't stray to far from the format of the show

2. They don't cast screaming idiot contestants:

[The password is "automobile"]
Celebrity: Car
Contestant: Automobile
Regis: Yes!!
Contestant: YEAAAAAAHHHH!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
(Gets up and dances, high fives audience members)

3. They get decent celebrities. Regis should have Gelman drug and kidnap
the guests from "Regis and Kelly"

From www.thefutoncritic.com: Regis Philbin returns to prime time to host MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD, a modern update of one of television's greatest game shows, premiering Sunday, June 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT). This update takes the classic game and brings it to the 21st century with big celebrities, big money and big stakes. Contestants team up with some of the hottest stars, from Rosie O'Donnell, Betty White, Rachael Ray and Neil Patrick Harris to "High School Musical's" Monique Coleman, to earn up to one million dollars. One player from the team is told secret passwords and can use only one-word clues to get the teammate to guess them. If the player and the celebrity can work well together and become a solid team, that player could uncover the MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD.

MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD is produced by FremantleMedia North America, Inc. Vincent Rubino and Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of FremantleMedia North America, are executive producers.

Love Password! But I would love to see 20,000.00 Pyramid back (well maybe more like 50,000.00 Pyramid!)

Million Dollar Pyramid or no sale!

They tried to bring Pyramid back some years ago with Donnie Osmond. Though the contestants got more time to give the clues, it felt like each episode was kind of rushed. I enjoyed it pretty much, though. Osmond turned out to be a great compliment to the Dick Clark days. Bummer it didn't stick around longer.

Great, probably another drawn-out modern game show with bombastic music, apocalyptic lighting, and 5 minutes of content surrounded by 55 minutes of filler. Pass. I'll watch "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" if I want to see a classical fast-paced, entertaining, challenging game show.

I really liked watching the old black and white version, when the host would ask the ladies "what does your husband do for a living?"

I would love that.

Or Classic Concentration.
I just wish GSN would just show repeats of Trebek's version of that show.

Not to mention dramatically going to a commercial before each result.

Crosswords is an example of a new game show done correctly. Say hello to the contestants for a minute or two, then it's all about the game.

I am enjoying Duel (on ABC Friday night). That game moves very fast, with lots of questions.

I'll watch it. I liked the old Password with Bert Convy. I would love to see an updater version of Scrabble.

I haven't seen the original but read the first post and was thinking how boring it would be to watch knowing the answer. How exciting would Jeopardy be if they made both the answer & question viewable to the audience? Or flashed on screen the answers to Wheel of Fortune before the puzzle starts?

Sounds like a lame idea to me but if anyone can make it work it will be Regis.
