Lust, Caution - 2/19/2008

I must say, I am incredibly disappointed that it comes with only one feature. Here's top hoping they change that between now and the 19th.

Well, Brokeback Mountain got a decent release after it won Oscars. They're probably hoping for something similar.

I'll wait until I can get the film for $8 then I won't feel bad about not picking it up for a premium and the one feature as you put it (OP), as I don't buy DVDs for the extras anyway.

Now will it be anamorphic along with the best possible soundtrack? That's another couple of questions.

Apparently the film is ripping up a storm in China and other Asian countries. Can' wait to see what the hype is all about ......

Thx for the head's up on the release date ......

And no HD-DVD version. *sigh*

Thanks, Universal, for continuing to offer up gems like Mr. Bean and Balls of Fury on high-def, but not, y'know, good movies.

Just out of curiosity, how graphic are the sex scenes? Did it really warrant an NC-17 rating? I think the most graphic recent HK movies I have ever seen was Fatal Love with Michael Wong and Sex and Zen.

uh, it prob did, as there are a few genetalia shots, and somewhat unusual positions shown. Also the brutalness of the first major sex scene probably helped some (but it never feels like porn). Terrific movie, def buy for me, since its something that you kind of need to see twice to fully appreciate everything in the movie.

I myself am hoping it gets in for (and wins) Cinematography and Original Score.

An Alexandre Desplat score has never affected me as deeply as his Lust score did.

HORRENDOUS new artwork! This really bothers me. I loved the original artwork. Why in the world are they destroying it and using this? My god! It's an abomination. Bring back the originl artwork. They're obviously trying to sell it as just a sex movie and not art like the original cover art would have suggested. I wouldn't have minded had they been able to come up with some nice artwork but this is truly appalling.

Still, I'll be renting this one as it never came to my theater.

funny how they're selling it as a sex movie, when theirs no real sex until at least an hour and half into the movie.

at this point, I feel is Universal (and Paramount for that matter) is seriousily undermining HD-DVD and is just asking the format to shrivel up and die. If they aren't committed who will be??

This isn't the thread to get into it, but I feel exactly the same way and have more or less stopped supporting the format, and their releases in particular.

And, good lord, the new artwork is wretched. "ORIGINAL NC-17 FILM!" A wholly shameful and embarassing design choice on their part.

It's a great film that is wholly consistent with Ang Lee's career-long interest in exploring the themes of emotional/sexual repression, whether socially or self-imposed. Many Asian DVDs get fairly barebones treatment when released in R1, so I'm not too surprised to see that. At least it's going to be released uncut, as the film would lose some of its power otherwise.

This was a little too long for me...I can't imagine watching it again more than once. So I'm gonna Netflix this one.

Anybody know what the characters Tony Leung's character writes at the end of the film are?

Does anyone know if there are A/V comparisons between the R1 disc and the R3 SE?

The R3 seems really skimpy on the extras (as with the R1), but has fancy packaging/lobby cards. I'd like to pick it up but rather not pay the extra $16 if the R1 is just as good A/V wise.

from the looks of it, they cut 4 minutes of the sex scene's. Timing everything from celeb movie archive, it seems like they left some of it in, as there wasn't that much sex in the movie, just a 2 scene's that show a bit more then normal.
