Woot has something today that people here might be interested in. However it is a Polaroid which means the one you get may or may not work well.

It evidently has a QAM tuner so it can tune unencrypted digital cable and it can record (in SD) from it. HDMI output (480p only) as well as composite and s-video. Some other interesting features as well.

Features:

Records up to 204 hours of media on the 160GB built-in hard disc drive (No subscription needed)
Includes YesDVD Software to create DVDs at the touch of a button
HDMI connection for easy connection to your flat panel

Built-in ATSC digital and NTSC analog tuners
YesDVD enabled indexing, auto chaptering, organization, and sharing of multi-media content
Front USB and SD card reader ports
Simultaneous DVD playback and record movie on hard disc
Record in different quality and length (HQ, SP, LP, EP, SLP)
Easy one-touch recording with auto index creation
30-second skip lets you jump over commercials for commercial-free viewing
10-second replay allows you to go back 10 seconds to replay what you missed
Easy editing on recorded video content
Records to DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW
Plays DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, music CDs, CD-R/RW
JPEG image compatible
Progressive scan (480p) video output
Front panel VFD display

I don't need one, but Google'd it out of curiosity this morning. The reviews I read were mixed. (although I didn't spend a whole lot of time researching)

Saw this late last night. The polaroid name is a HUGE turnoff. I hear nothing but horror stories about their quality nowadays, and would not buy anything from them ever again. Thanks for looking out though. If it was any other manufacturer i would be seriously considering it.

HDMI w/ 480p?! What's the point?

It's a piracy limitation.

Interestingly, I have heard, Polaroid is no longer a manufacturer, only a name that is for sale and can be slapped on any product that pays the licensing.

Regardless, it is a brand to be avoided, deal or no.

I've got the one with the 80GB built-in hard disc drive and it does ok I guess. I thought about getting this one for the price. I mostly use mine like a Tivo anyway. Would it not be worth it for that reason?

I went ahead and ordered one, figured Id use it like a tivo, I already have a dvd recorder on my computer, but for 100 bucks, figured id try, and if it sucks ill sell it on ebay.

I have the 120 gb (or is it 80?) and paid 120.00 for it on ebay used. It's not that great but for someone who records occasionally it does it's job. Plus it's one of the few dvrs left that you dont have to pay for service.
