They're the same, just different covers.

Interestingly, the older DVD release has none of the special features listed on the back.

Hmm...

I tried looking it up on dvdcompare.net (http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=363), and 95% of the time you can get your answer there right away, but I'm not quite sure. I *think* the top version is the original release, and the bottom version is a re-release of that disc, but I'm guessing no change, just packaging. Non-anamorphic, I believe.

On DVDCompare.net, one of the versions they listed they imply is only in the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection, but it is anamorphic.

I have the one you show on the bottom, I'll check out if it is anamorphic tonight. When I watched it, I didn't have my new TV at the time, so I'm not sure.

thanks for the help guys!

to make things more confusing, one review on amazon states that the older collectors edition (dont know which) is actually anamorphic?!

plus i think both of the collectors editions have the same upc.

I can confirm, both are non-anamorphic.

Yeah, they're the same just with different artwork. The top one is the original release from May 1998. The bottom one was released a year later when Universal put together "The Alfred Hitchcock Collection" and updated the Psycho disc and cover art accordingly. The content is exactly the same, however, and both are non-anamorphic.

The latest Psycho DVD - from the "Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection" box set - boasts a new and improved anamorphic transfer. That's the one you want. Hopefully, Universal will finish releasing the rest of the films in that box set individually so those of us who don't want the entire box can finally get Psycho (and Vertigo) in all its anamorphic glory.

What about this difference on the first collector's edition (in bold):

DVD Features:

Region 1
Keep Case
Anamorphic Widescreen - 1.85
Single Side - Dual Layer
Audio:
Dolby Digital Mono 2.0 - English
Dolby Digital Mono 2.0 - French
Additional Release Material:
Featurette
Production Interviews - 1. Cast & Crew
Deleted Scenes - 1. Censored Scene
Additional Footage - 1. Newsreel Footage
Text/Photo Galleries:
Production Art
Stills/Photos - 1. Production Photos

I rented this edition once and remembered the scene, which is more of Norman looking through the peephole at Marion undressing. I was surprised when this deleted scene did not make it onto the Hitchcock Collection disc, which is the one I own. Anyone else remember this?
