Theatrical Cartoons - Academy Award Winners and Nominees assembled on DVD
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Bug...ollection/8456
This is kind of neat - a collage of classic cartoons on both a one-disc (winners) and a three-disc (winners & nominees) collection.
Tom & Jerry itself has 7 Oscars and several nominations; Bugs Bunny won just one (???) and has a couple nominations (or just one with A Wild Hare, I'm not sure if he picked up one more after his debut).
Of course, this set is limited because Warners doesn't own everything, so the Woody Woodpecker Oscar-nominated shorts are excluded, as are The Pink Panther.
But it does include Popeye and Superman, so it sounds like an interesting set, to say the least.

I have a feeling that they're not including all their nominees. Here's the 15 winners:
The Milky Way (1940) [MGM/Harmon-Ising]
Yankee Doodle Mouse (1943) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Mouse Trouble (1944) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
The Cat Concerto (1947) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Tweety Pie (1947) [WB]
The Little Orphan (1948) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
So Much for So Little (1949) [WB] (Best Documentary Short)
For Scent-imental Reasons (1949) [WB]
The Two Mouseketeers (1951) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Johan Mouse (1952) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Speedy Gonzales (1955) [WB]
Birds Anonymous (1957) [WB]
Knighty Knight Bugs (1958) [WB]
The Dot and the Line (1965) [MGM/Chuck Jones]
and here's all the shorts only nominated:
It's Got Me Again! (1932) [WB]
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936) [Fleischer]
Detouring America (1939) [WB]
Peace on Earth (1939) [MGM/Harmon-Ising]
Puss Gets the Boot (1940) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
A Wild Hare (1940) [WB/Merrie Melodie]
Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt (1941) [WB]
The Night Before Christmas (1941) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Rhapsody in Rivets (1941) [WB]
The Rookie Bear (1941) [MGM]
Superman (1941) [Fleischer]
Blitz Wolf (1942) [MGM/Tex Avery]
Pigs in a Polka (1943) [WB]
Greetings Bait (1943) [WB]
Swooner Crooner (1944) [WB/Merrie Melodie]
Quiet Please! (1945) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Life with Feathers (1945) [WB]
Walky Talky Hawky (1946) [WB]
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Mouse [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Mouse Wreckers (1948) [WB]
Canary Row (1950) [WB] (withdrawn)
Hatch Up Your Troubles (1949) [MGM]
Jerry's Cousin (1951) [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
From A to Z-Z-Z-Z (1953) [WB]
Sandy Claws (1954) [WB]
Touche, Pussy Cat! [MGM/Tom & Jerry]
Good Will to Men (1955) [MGM]
One Droopy Knight (1957) [MGM]
Tabasco Road (1957) [WB]
Mexicali Shmoes (1959) [WB]
High Note (1960) [WB]
Mouse and Garden (1960) [WB]
Beep Prepared (1961) [WB]
Nelly's Folly (1961) [WB]
The Pied Piper of Guadalupe (1961) [WB]
Now Hear This (1962) [WB]
The Chicken from Outer Space (1995) [Cartoon Network/John Dilworth]
That's 37 (or just 35 if this will only be classic-era and Canary Row isn't counted since it was withdrawn)!
If the cover already has Popeye, Foghorn Leghorn, Superman, and Droopy, that at least means that Sindbad the Sailor, Walky Talky Hawky, Superman '41, and One Droopy Knight will be included.

I'll most likely get this, being the huge classic animation fan that I am.
Could anybody list what is new for this DVD and not already on the Golden Collections?
I really wish WB would release an all MGM Avery set. I think that it would be a big seller. I would also love to have an official set of the Fleischer Superman cartoons (I mean, come on...they were already restored for the Superman Ultimate Set). I may have to keep dreaming.

The press release says the 3-disc set will contain 15 shorts that have never been released on DVD, but still doesn't give a complete list, unfortunately.

I'm primiarly concerned about Restoration.
about 3/4's of the WB winners/nominess have been restored for the Looney Tunes Golden collections, Popeye meets Sindbad was restored for the Popeye sets, Superman was restored for the Ultimate Superman set, and One Droopy Knight and three of the Tom and Jerry Oscar shorts were restored for the Tom and Jerry and Droopy sets.
The rest either haven't been released on DVD or have been released on DVD from old masters without restoration. That means unless this DVD lives up to its claim of the cartoons being restored from the original masters, we're looking at a jarring hodgepodge of restored shorts and ancient old video transfers.

This is coming out soon. It looks like a really great package, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for me. I own all of the Looney Tunes Golden Collections, Popeye, and the Droopy collection. I don't have any Tom & Jerry, so it might be worth it I guess. Especially for some of the MGM stuff.
What do you guys think?

I'm on the fence on this one as well, I have to assume the Looney Tunes one currently not on the Golden Collections will eventually show up there.

I've pretty much looked through most of the three-disc set, save for the featurettes on Disc Three.
On the surface the presentations are top notch and feature WB's standard template of audio commentaries by the usual suspects (Beck, Goldberg, Ford) and music-only tracks.
Definite pluses: Avery's Little Johnny Jet (although it looks the least restored of the bunch), Paul Dini commentary on the Superman short, Blitz Wolf (MGM war toon) and the Dot and the Line.
But it's feels very Tom & Jerry heavy; so it plays more like a greatest hits of the Tom & Jerry sets.
One Droopy Knight is presented letter-boxed but not anamorphic (I thought it was anamorphic on the Droopy set). Same can be said for Touché Pussy cat and Good Will to Men.
A mixed bag and probably not wholly essential given some if not all of this will show up later (like the Popeye meets Sinbad, which looks amazing).

Has anyone ever released a DVD collection of animated short Oscar winners that aren't from major US film studios? The National Film Board of Canada has won several over the years, and I assume others have won as well, including other countries and maybe US productions that weren't as mainstream. They announce the winners every year, but there's no place to ever see most of them.
