Most rivalries are next weekend, with some more the weekend after. Other than OSU-Michigan, what rivalries are this weekend?

Yeah.. UH/Nevada isn't exactly a rivalry. Last week would have been more appropriate against Fresno State. And of course, next week against Boise St.

hence my question mark in the title. i don't know why the Big 10 insists on ending a week or two before everyone else....but it's lame.

I thought it was Miami (OH). Although, the campuses of Toledo and BG are like 30 mins from each other.

Yeah, Minnesota is in a lot of Trophy games (Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa), but they don't hang onto those things very often.

what a crock of shit....

This is why Notre Dame drives people nuts
by Ryan White
Thursday November 15, 2007, 11:49 AM

It's been an enjoyable season if you don't like Notre Dame. The Irish are 1-9 and have given up 87 points in back-to-back home losses to service academies. Things are so bad Duke thinks it can win a football game against Notre Dame this weekend.
This has been, in every way, the worst season in the history of football in South Bend, Ind.

But there's good news on the horizon. I was just thumbing through the BCS media guide, and came to page 9, Revenue Distribution for 2008 BCS Games.

"Notre Dame is guaranteed 1/66th of the net revenues after expenses, or approximately $1.3 million. Notre Dame will receive an additional $4.5 million when its team is a participant."

And that's why Notre Dame drives people nuts.

Don't teams like Duke and Arizona also get payouts from the BCS system even though they never play in those games?

And that's why Notre Dame drives people nuts.

Notre Dame did not get a guaranteed $1M from the BCS until this season (or maybe last season)--this was something that was forced on Notre Dame, not something that Notre Dame wanted. Prior to this new deal, Notre Dame would get the full payout that the BCS bowl game pays out to the conference of a participating team, $17 Million--so, when ND appeared in the Fiesta Bowl in January 2006, they got $17 million for it. Other schools felt this was unfair, as they have to split the big BCS payout with the rest of their conference. So the sides negotiated a deal whereby Notre Dame only gets $4.5 million when they reach a BCS game, rather than $17 million, and in exchange gets a guaranteed $1 million each year.

It would seem that, barring any huge upsets (and of course, huge upsets are sure to occur this season) that the Big 12 Champion will get to play in the BCS title game. Kansas and Missouri would play each other with one loss each and both in the top 5. The winner of that game plays 1-loss Oklahoma in the Big-12 title game--so that game would be another between two top-5 teams. The winner of that game would presumably be #2 in all the polls.

This mess of a season is good reason why we need at least a Plus One one-game playoff. I wouldn't be surprised that given what happened this season, we'll end up with an eight-team playoff system with seven bowl games assigned to the playoffs.

Toad
11-16-07, 06:51 AM
It's possible we could have about 12 teams with 2 losses and no one with just 1. I guess it then comes down to strength of schedule, quality of wins, quality of losses, etc.

It would be neat to pit them all in a playoff system, but I realize that's not happening.

I know you're just saying this to push my buttons because clearly you're not dumb enough to think it was a straight up match after we lose our leading heisman candidate in the first qtr.

That's sports though. Lose your #1 player and even a team of retards can come out on top.

Yeah, Oregon wins that game if Dixon doesn't get hurt.

I hate to see ANY team lose that way. If they lose with their best players playing the game, fine. But if they lose because their most important player(s) get hurt? That's not really a legit loss. That's just bad luck. Regardless, Oregon's out of the title picture now.

Are you calling for ISU to upset KU this weekend because, last I checked, they were still undefeated. ;)

As for the Big 12 picture...

OU can easily lose at Texas Tech this weekend. I don't think they will, but it wouldn't shock me. I'd like to say that OSU could also upset @OU, but I'm a realist...

KU will roll over ISU. Missouri could stumble against KSU. If they both win, then their game will determine who plays for the Big 12. If MU loses to KSU, then beating KU in regular season probably won't get them to the conf title game.

It will likely be OU & KU in the game and I don't know how that'll go down. It's in San Antonio instead of KC this year. I expect as many OU-haters as KU-lovers in Texas. I'd bet on KU to pull it out and I'd love to see them get to the national title game because who would have ever thought they'd be there ever?

You are a #2 ranked team. Well, you were. You should be able to beat UofA with your entire second string team. Yes, losing your Heisman candidate QB hurts, but if your #2 isn't serviceable enough to beat a sub-par team, then you don't deserve to be contending for a national championship.

I guess I got the marketing term mixed up ( :) ). This game is "the South's Oldest Rivalry":

Richmond's traditional rival in many sports is the College of William and Mary. In football, Richmond and William and Mary have met 116 times since 1898, making the rivalry (sometimes referred to as "the South's oldest rivalry") the 4th most-played in Division I college football. Only Lafayette-Lehigh, Princeton-Yale, and Harvard-Yale have played more games.

Yeah, out of the 4 QBs on the squad, #1 (Dixon) was out, #2 (Leaf) was hobbled, #3 (Costa) is out for the year with an ACL tear (I think) and #4 (Roeper) is a true freshman, not exactly someone I would trust to win the game. Now, if they lose to UCLA next week, I say go with him against Oregon State.

But since Dixon was the key to this offense and the only mobile QB who could run it effectively, they were merely average.

Purdue had scored 21 unanswered points, the final following an IU fumble with 4 minutes left, to tie the game at 24. Indiana took the ball to the Purdue 30 and kicked the game winning FG with :30 left.

The Hoosiers finish 7-5 overall, 3-5 in the Big Ten (which ties them for the final "guaranteed" conference bowl berth), they beat the cross-state rival for only the 2nd time in the past 11 years, and it looks like they might actually get invited to play the 13th game that Terry Hoeppner hoped they would.

WVU had to sweat a little bit at the end and convert some 1st downs to run out the clock, but a good night for them - a win and the round-robin B12 effect likely out of play. Now they can just root for Arkansas next week or the B12 South champ or SEC East champ in 2 weeks. Their bigger problem might actually be taking care of business themselves vs UConn - I could see them laying an egg there like they did vs. SFU last year.

LSU to lose at Arkansas.......mizzou to beat Kansas.... who then Lose to OU

USC to beat ASU.....
the only 1 lose teams in the major conferences would be Kansas, West Virginia and Ohio State......So WVU v. OSU in the championship

While I am cautiously optimistic that your title game prediction won't come to fruition, I, (and all those I know), harbor no ill will towards those teams. The chance was blown, clear and simple.

Bradford came out in the first quarter due to an apparent concussion and the OU offense couldn't do shit after that until the end of the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late.

Somewhat similar to what happened the other night with Oregon when Dixon went out.

Because I'm sure your average OSU fan thinks they are more deserving with 1 loss than a 1-loss team from the Big East and a B12 team (particularly a 1-loss Missou) that's never done anything before this year.

Most people around here do realize that is as much "when" you lose almost as much as who you lose to. OSU most likely doesn't have the time to move back up (and it was at home to a then unranked team).

Do people think OSU is better than Missouri or WVU? Yeah, a lot do, but you won't see a lot of complainers, most understand the system.

Even with Bradford in there for the whole thing, I think it still would have been a tough game last night. OU's secondary couldn't stop them at all. Tech may be unranked, but they've given OU fits in the last few years, especially in Lubbock.

So, does this seem to mostly summarize what most people believe the championship scenarios to look like?

LSU: Makes championship game with win over Arkansas and win in SEC title game. LSU also backs into championship game if (a) Connecticut beats West Virginia and (b) Oklahoma wins big XII title game.

Kansas/Missouri: Makes championship game with win this week and win next week over Oklahoma in Big XII title game.

West Virginia: Makes championship game with win over Connecticut and either (a) LSU loss this week or next OR (b) Oklahoma victory in Big XII title game.

Ohio State: Makes championship game with at least two of: (a) LSU loss this week or next, (b) Oklahoma victory in Big XII title game, (c) Connecticut win over West Virginia.

Kansas/Missouri: Makes championship game with win this week and win next week over Oklahoma in Big XII title game.

West Virginia: Makes championship game with Big East title and either (a) LSU loss this week or next OR (b) Oklahoma victory in Big XII title game.

In an attempt to avoid a potential headache at the end of the regular season, the commissioners of the six BCS football conferences have voted to expand the pool of BCS at-large candidates from 14 to 18.

The new rule goes into effect only if there aren't enough teams among the top 14 of the final BCS standings to fill 10 slots in the BCS National Championship Game, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl.

The new rule was approved by commissioners for the 2007 season and will be announced by the BCS on Tuesday.

"The commissioners voted that in a case where there wasn't enough teams in the at-large pool, they would expand it by four," said Charles Bloom, associate commissioner of the SEC and BCS media coordinator. "If there were enough teams to fill the BCS from the pool of 14, it wouldn't be expanded."

Under the current BCS rules, champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and SEC conferences receive automatic berths in the five BCS games. The top two teams in the final BCS standings will play in the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship Game at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

Teams from the five non-BCS leagues (Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt and WAC) receive an automatic BCS berth only if they finish in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or in the top 16 and ranked ahead of a champion from one of the six BCS conferences. No more than one such team from the non-BCS leagues can receive an automatic berth in one season.

The new rule doesn't change the qualification requirements for non-BCS teams, Bloom said.

If no team from a non-BCS league meets the criteria, then the four BCS at-large spots can be filled by teams that won at least nine games and finished in the top 14 of the final standings.

But here's the potential problem this season: Only two teams from one BCS league can play in BCS bowl games.

There are currently four Big 12 teams, three SEC teams and three Pac-10 teams ranked in the top 14 of the BCS standings. Two ACC teams and one team from both the Big Ten and Big East are among the top 14.

If the season ended now, there would be enough eligible teams to fill the 10 BCS spots.

But each of the ACC teams (No. 8 Virginia Tech and No. 14 Boston College) would be in danger of falling out of the top 14 if they lose again. The Hokies play No. 16 Virginia Saturday. The winner of that game faces the Eagles in the Dec. 1 ACC championship game in Jacksonville, Fla. Boston College finishes the regular season at home against Miami on Saturday.

Two teams from non-BCS leagues have a chance of reaching the top 12 in the final BCS standings. Hawaii, one of two unbeaten teams left in major college football, plays No. 19 Boise State at Aloha Stadium on Friday night. The No. 15 Warriors might move into the top 12 if they beat the Broncos and Washington on Dec. 1 and finish 12-0. But the Broncos, who would finish 11-1 by beating Hawaii, might not jump seven spots to No. 12 in the BCS standings, even after beating the unbeaten Warriors.

"I don't think [the new rule] really has an effect on Boise State or Hawaii," WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said Monday night. "This isn't anything that reduces or eliminates Boise State's or Hawaii's chances of getting into the BCS. Obviously, if they get into the top 12, it's still guaranteed."

The teams which would figure to benefit most from the rules change include No. 17 Illinois, which finished its season with a 9-3 record, and No. 20 Connecticut, which would move up in the rankings if it upsets No. 3 West Virginia on Saturday. The loser of the ACC championship game also might be eligible for a BCS at-large berth under the new rule

If Illinois and UConn go to a BCS game over some of the other teams, it's a travesty.

[If UGA beats Georgia Tech, and Tennessee wins and goes to the SEC Championship game and beats LSU, UGA --- a top 7 team --- will not go to a BCS game. If it was "your" team, you'd think it's lame, too. ;)]

You just have to love a system that requires a change 2 weeks before the end of the regular season.

Can you imagine the NFL changing their playoff birth criteria in Week 15 or MLB changing their on September 20?

If that's not an indictment that something's wrong, I don't know what is.

[Not to open that can of worms.]

I'm surprised the change didn't involve getting a 2-win Notre Dame team into a BCS game.

Also, OU isn't in the B12 Title Game yet.Okay, then replace "Oklahoma"...

Take Three:

LSU: Makes championship game with win over Arkansas and win in SEC title game. LSU also backs into championship game if (a) West Virginia loses to Connecticut or Pitt, and (b) Kansas/Missouri lose XII title game.

Kansas/Missouri: Win the Big XII title with a win this week and a win in the championship game next week.

West Virginia: Makes championship game with Big East title and either (a) LSU loss this week or next OR (b) Kansas/Missouri loss in Big XII title game.

Ohio State: Makes championship game with at least two of: (a) LSU loss this week or next, (b) Kansas/Missouri loss in Big XII title game, (c) West Virginia loses to Connecticut or Pitt.

Wow, this is clearly a superior system.
