I have a Sony DE-445 receiver that I've had for years. I had not used my DVD player which has the digital output connected to the receiver in a long time. When I did the other day, no sound came out. Now I have a PS3 and have the same problem. i'm assuming the source is ok (dvd player/ps3) so it has got to be the cable or the receiver. I went through the manual for the receiver and reset everything and still no sound.

Can an optical cable go bad? I assumed it was just a passthrough.

Well an optical cable can get kinked or bent.

Make sure you have removed any small plastic plugs on the end of the cable. If it was working this way before then disregard.

Next make sure that both the output device and the input device are set to use the optical option.

Sorry, did not necessarily mean you but I have seen it done, many times.

Unless your setting got changed it is hard to believe that the cable would just fail. Optical cable can get "broken" or kinked, make sure this did not happen.

Oh I wasn't making fun of the plastic cap thing.. always best in troubleshooting to start with the simplest solution.

If it's not been used in awhile, it may have reset to factory settings, which means you'll need to go into the player's setup menus, and set the audio output to "Bitstream", and not PCM. Same with the ps3. DTS may also need to be turned "ON", separately from Bitstream setting.

Are you sure the optical input, on the receiver, has been assigned to what you're plugging into it?
Good luck!

I'll try those ideas when I get home. It may just be time for a new receiver. Can you guys recommend one?

For inputs, I would have a PS3, DVD Player, Ipod, HTPC, Cable Box. Would need HDMI and Digi Optical.

Another thing you might want to check is your owners manual to make sure the Optical port is only for a certain input. I have a Sony receiver that's about 2 years old and the optical connection is only for SACD. So if I watch a DVD then I have to set the receiver to SACD but it works fine; just doesn't say DVD on the display. Give that a shot.
