Why aren't songs subtitled?

I've noticed this on alot of my TV Show DVDs that I have. Whenever someone is singing, or there's a song playing, there is hardly ever any subtitles for the lyrics. I've always wondered why this is, and havn't been able to find an answer. I currently expect that maybe it has something to do with the licensing of the song, but I figure that if they are singing it, then that's not it.

I think (and I stress I only think, so I am prepared to be proven wrong) is that it's because there are copyrights in printing the song lyrics. I noticed in CD booklets through all the years, they often read the lyrics are printed with permission. Perhaps to subtitle them would mean they'd have to get permission and pay an extra fee and they figured it's not worth the hassle.
