4 Studio Canal Criterion titles now OOP

Apparently Variety Lights, Port of Shadows, Le Corbeau and Quai des ofrevres are now out of print. Hope this means a new edition of Variety Lights - it needs one. Decided not to wait until the possible DVD Planet sale to pick up Quai des ofrevres - it's still in stock, for $20.98 shipped. Info courtesy of criterionforum.org:

I'd highly recommend the two Clouzot films.

As well as Port of Shadows - amazing film. Not sure why this one has gone OOP so quickly.

Quai des ofrefves now says out of stock, though I could have sworn it was in stock when I placed my order. Does your order say out of stock as well?

Because I am such a nice guy, here are the links to said DVD's for Amazon & Criteriondvd.com:

Variety Lights
http://www.amazon.com/Variety-Lights...4535587&sr=8-1
http://www.criteriondvd.com/item_info.php?item_id=120

Quai des Orfevres
http://www.amazon.com/Quai-Orfevres-...4535601&sr=8-1
http://www.criteriondvd.com/item_info.php?item_id=218

Le Corbeau
http://www.amazon.com/Corbeau-Raven-...4535616&sr=8-1
http://www.criteriondvd.com/item_info.php?item_id=243

Port Of Shadows
http://www.amazon.com/Port-Shadows-C...4535631&sr=8-1
http://www.criteriondvd.com/item_info.php?item_id=283

All items are in stock as of now.

EDIT: Thanks to the original poster for the heads up. I have been trying to build up my Criterion Collection and anything that goes OOP doesn't help.

$107.96 to be exact. I couldn't resist, as Wages of Fear is one of my favorite Criterion titles. Damn you, damn you OP!

I ordered it through a seller on the Amazon Marketplace.

I emailed Criterion and they said they had no plans to revisit Variety Lights. That could change of course, but I ordered it from Amazon anyway, as the titles are now out of stock at Criterion's store. $26.99 for a bare bones title really stings, but I'd feel worse if I didn't pull the trigger and saw it for 60 bucks or more in a couple of months.

Looks as if Passion of Joan of Arc and possibly L'Avventura are now OOP as well, though both are currently in stock at Criterion's online store.

Why is it assumed those are OOP?

I haven't heard about a new transfer for The Passion of Joan of Arc being created. I highly recommend the film regardless of it going OOP. It is the most essential movie in the Criterion Collection.

Passion of Joan of Arc is no longer listed/out of stock at DD, DVD Planet, DVD Empire, and the rest of the major etailers, and Amazon only carries it from third party vendors for $49.99 and up. L'Avventura someone had mentioned in the DVD Planet sale thread as possibly being out of print- I'm not sure about that one. I know what happens when someone assumes, however....sent off an email to Criterion about the status of these two titles, will post back when I hear from them.

I was just curious because usually criterion will put oop on the non store part of the site. And it isnt there yet. But this could be an early warning and is appreciated.

L'AVVENTURA appears to be a janus release and was in the Janus boxset so this is probably a candidtae for a new release.

The only one of those I don't have is Variety Lights.

Just snagged a copy at Overstock.

Thanks OP.

I found L'Avventura & Passion of Joan of Arc on DVDEmpire...although one is on order. Both are readily available at criteriondvd.com as of this moment.

$26 really frosts my cookie, but I'd feel the same way so I ordered Variety Lights and Quai des ofrefves from Best Buy using a Reward Zone cert. I'd held off buying Quai until this DD sale... so that backfired and not having Variety Lights until now is just a heinous oversight.

Since Joan and L'Avventura are both Janus titles (and not StudioCanal), there should be no reason that Criterion would ever lose distribution rights to them. And neither of them are in particular need of upgrading. Perhaps these two titles have just been in unusually high demand lately -- what the the DD and DVD Planet sales and the DVD Empire special on Criterion titles.

Yeah, looks like I jumped the gun on those two- Criterion emailed me today to say they were both still in print.

Why? It already has a great anamorphic transfer and is a 2-disc set with plenty of extras. Criterion has never double-dipped on a title that needed one so little.
