40GB PS3 gets 65nm Chip and new motherboard
Posted Oct 30, 2007 at 09:35AM by Isaac C.
Despite knowing that you can't kill a PlayStation 3 whether you play it in the back of a freezer van or a heat sauna, Sony still takes it to the next level by incorporating the 65nm Cell chip on the new 40GB models. (They probably aim to make it nigh indestructible.)
The addition of the Cell chip lets the PS3 reduce its power consumption, bringing it down to 135 Watts from 200 Watts. The console then runs cooler and quieter, which as any gamer who plays for an extended period of time will know is always a good thing.
Aside from the Cell chip, the new 40GB console insides (as opposed to the recent comparison of the outside) have been considerably tinkered with (in a good way, to be sure). The heat pipe is smaller and the motherboard has been changed with a new version, which now has a battery to keep the system time when the console is off.
It's been reported way back when that the 65nm Cell chip would land on the PS3 (it just landed on the Xbox 360 first is all). It was also expected to land on a new PS3 model with lower manufacturing costs (which the 40GB console definitely is), which may suggest that plans for a 40GB console may have been in the works as early as then.
i have been thinking about getting a PS3 for a couple weeks now, and had a few questions...
1. Should i go ahead and get the 80GB bundle with MotorStorm, or wait for the new 40GB version? I've heard people have a hard time using up the space on the 60GB...
2. I dont have a HDTV at the moment but have every intention of getting one in the next 6 months. How bad does the PS3 look on a standard defintion set?
3. Let me know of anything else I need to know before picking up a PS3...

Nick,
I'm in the same boat and am leaning towards picking up the 80 GB version this weekend. I was contemplating the 40, but backwards compatibilty is somewhat important to me. Even though I have a PS2 slim, I'll probably end up letting my son use it in his room. Consequently, I need a backup whenever that Final Fantasy Tactics urge hits me. :) Since the 60 and 80 are the same price, I'll probably go with the 80 since it comes with a game. I know the 60 does better PS1 and PS2 emulation, but all the games I have on those platforms seem to work on the 80 according to Sony's backwards compatibility list.

AS far as the 40 vs 80, it's a tough call. I think the BC is a big deal to me (especially since you can transfer your saves over -- maybe some day I'll finish Okami). If that's not a big deal to you, that 40 seems like a very good deal -- especially with the new 65 chip. Don't let the game be a deciding factor for you. It's a good game, but can be had cheap on ebay.

I've had 2 PS3s and both exhibited some sort of signal interference.
The first would "lock" a left movement and force my character or whatever left for a few seconds then fix itself. The 2nd one randomly enters a triangle button from time to time. Most noticable when watching a movie because it brings up the control menu.

Mine physically sticks. I have no idea why, but it certainly isn't from overuse. In a game like R&C Future you're often jumping and a sticky "X" gets very annoying.
And am I the only one who keeps getting confused in games that require timed button presses (God of War style -- it seems to be the popular trend)? When I see an "X" icon, I need to think a second about whether I'm supposed to press at 6:00 (PS3) or at 9:00 (360).

Question:
Cheap ass that I am (not really), I don't really feel the need to go and get the PS2 memory card adapter for the PS3.
I have the older PS2 with the USB ports on it. Can I transfer game saves from my PS2 memory card to a pen drive on the PS2, then take the pen drive to the PS3 and upload them?
Also, I'm assuming if you start a new PS2 game on the PS3 it just saves to the hard drive, correct?

I noticed some weird inteference while playing NFS Carbon, as it seemed like I had to push the buttons in more than usual. It may have just been a specific type of sensitivity option or something, but I don't know. I traded that game in after I beat it in two days.
I've noticed some other interference with my controller, affecting Blu-ray viewings. Sometimes it'll skip chapters on its own if I have my controller on, so I've just assumed that it's interfering with my parents' phone, upstairs.

There are PS1 games for sale in the PS Store (Syphon Filter, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Rally Cross, etc) that are able to be purchased for $5.99 and played on EITHER system, which is kinda cool. Also DL'ed video content (mostly trailers and clips) can be played remotely, but the PS3 must be on and in "Remote Play" mode in order for it to work. In theory, you could use the PS3/PSP as a TIVO/ Slingbox but you can't really do this yet...

You create a virtual memory card on the hard drive for PS2 saves. You can bring over saves from your PS2 memory card but you can't go back.

I bought a PS3 ! :D There was a special at Circuit City and I ended up with the HDTV that I bought at Best Buy but new instead of the open model I got at Best Buy and I ended up with the PS3 for $354. Couldn't pass up a BD player + 5 movies + game for $354 (but I lost $35 in RZ certificates so I'm adding that to the $354). PLUS I got 24 months no financing vs 18 months no financing at Best Buy.
So pretty much:
Circuit City: Best Buy Price + $390
New TV
24 months financing
80 gig PS3
Best Buy:
Open model TV
18 months financing
Will probably pick it up this weekend :D
At Best Buy I paid $250 for a 4-year warranty plan. With this one I'm going with Squaretrade and paying $87 for a 3-year plan (they come to the house if it breaks and if they can't fix it they return the money for the TV (not the $87 though). $400 for 5 years was too expensive for the CC plan. In everyone's opinion what are the malfunction rates on Sony products?
So, PS3, here I come! :D
P.S. Forgot that I would have gotten $35 in Reward Zone Certificates, so the PS3 was around $390. I still think I came out ahead :)

Ain't that the truth. Being used to xbox live and having just bought a PS3, the PSN has been underwhelming to say the least. It took forever to download the Rachet and Clank demo, and then you have to wait for it to load?
PlayStation 3 2.00. Mythic sounding, ain't it? Oh, how we've pined for the promise of this transformation. Never mind that Xbox 360 has the games and Wii has the demand. This holiday, PS3 has the update -- and it's available tomorrow.
Now for the bads news: The update, well, it's, um, it's ... (how to put this?) ... it's lame it's not gonna 'un-lame' your crippled PS3. What, you cry, but it was supposed to trump the Halo 3s, the Mass Effects -- the best Mario game in more than a decade! We know. Sorry, folks. At least you can finally use your Canon printers. At least, firmware 2.00 is free.
Was that too harsh? Maybe. There are some welcome features. Here's the complete 2.00 breakdown:
* Remote Start - Energy savings: no need to leave your PS3 on all day while you periodically access it with your PSP during coffee breaks.
* Information Board - Scrolling headlines, handpicked by Sony for Sony. (Thankfully, you can disable the ticker until a later update, when Sony plans to let you import your own RSS feeds.)
* Themes - Create. Share. Love. Ain't that what community is all about? [Joystiq's pick for 'Best New Feature'; customize backgrounds, icons and fonts with companion PC software; supported by PlayStation.com and PlayStation Store.]
XMB Color Selector - Take control of the mood.
* Music & Photo Playlists - But no Music-Photo playlists.
* Additional Sorting Options - Now you can sort your music ... (ready for this?) ... by year!
* DualShock 3 support - A "last-gen" feature renewed (without a US release date).
* PLAYSTATION Network XMB group - Attention: PlayStation Store has moved to a new icon.
*Canon printer support - 'Cause even game consoles need to print things.
Optimists (like PS3 Fanboy) argue that 2.00 installs "the framework for a much meatier PS3 experience" with a host of new components that will eventually lead to polished entertainment. But we say Sony dropped the ball again and for a second straight straight holiday season has failed to make a play. (Just imagine where PS3 would be without Insomniac scoring down the stretch.) At this point, it's not a win Sony should be shooting for, it's a tie. More so than a wowing new feature, Sony needs to deliver parity. It's 2007, why can't we send a frickin' message to a buddy from a game's pause menu? Where's our in-game XMB access?
Music playlists is just not the feature we're looking for a year into PS3's life cycle. And still we wait.

Serious question: Does the PS3 *NEED* to sell games or can it survive comfortably existing as the best BD player for your home theater? If non gamers buy it and build a collection of BluRay movies, they're adding to their profitability the same as if they were selling the same amount of games, no?

They make more off each game sold than each movie sold. I'd bet they even make more off each game sold than every three movies sold. (Even $60).

They take a huge loss on the PS3 and make it back in games and accessories. Sure they would make some on BD movies, but I don't think the profit margin is as high as it is on a $5 plastic controller selling for $60. I think it will be a long while before they are profitable on the hardware so I doubt that method would work.
Who knows though.

Pixy, I have a Lynksys router, could you explain what you mean by this?PS3 has all kinds of problems with Linksys routers. Same old, same old for me. I was able to get the themes, but when I tried to get to the uncharted demo everything stopped responding. Now I can't get the store to even load.
Hate the freaking Playstation Network.
BTW, the themes are pretty bad. I put the Nature one on for now, but the other ones suck. Hopefully they will have user tools so we can get better theme options just like the PSP.

I was able to download Uncharted with no problems after updating. And by no problems, of course I mean the usual 3+ hours for a demo on the Playstation Store. I played it for a little bit, and its pretty cool. I didn't like how headshots didn't kill the enemies in one hit, and I wish there was a better way to aim when peeking around corners.

The difference between PS3 games in Standard Def and High Def is huge. You don't have to get a Sony branded cable. www.monoprice.com sells great HDMI cables that are very affordable. However, you have to upgrade form that composite cable if you have an HDTV.

:jawdrop: Dude, those standard composite cables don't pass an HD signal of any kind. Assuming you have an HDTV, you're essentially seeing a 480i signal upscaled by your TV. An HDMI cable will make a HUGE difference, allowing you to send up to a 1080p signal depending on your TV. Any HDMI cable will do. I recommend www.monoprice.com. Excellent prices, and the quality is top-notch.

The back of the PS3 has an optical port, AV port(composite, component), an HDMI port and an ethernet port.

Yes, if you want, you can connect the HDMI cable to your TV and connect the optical cable to your receiver. You just have to tell your PS3 which connections to use for Video and Audio.
If you feel like upgrading your receiver, you can get one with HDMI. Then you can enjoy multi-channel lossless audio (all those PCM and TrueHD tracks on Blu-ray discs).
And when the PS3 was first released, the DVD player was a piece of crap. But then Sony did an update which added upconversion and it is awesome! It will upconvert DVDs to 1080p through an HDMI cable.

If I did this, would it work this way? HDMI from PS3 to Receiver and then HDMI from Receiver to TV?
Also until I get the digital output stuff taken care of, can I have the HDMI go directly to my TV for video and have the composite (white and red cable) go to the receiver for audio?

Confirmed: Bioshock Coming To PS3 in 08
Posted: 11/11/2007 04:05:00 PM | wildmatt
2K Boston (Irrational) let the news slip out today that the ultra popular Bioshock is indeed coming to the PS3, labelled with a "Spring 2008" release. Speaking with some one on the "inside", he told us the project was always slated for a PS3 release. It was just a matter of waiting for the timed exclusivity to expire.
So taking that in mind, Spring is slightly over 6 months from the 360's release date, so we'll assume the deal was for 6 months.
Microsoft knows what they're doing, 6 months is perfect, every one who's wanted to play it, has already. So that leaves so little people for the PS3 version, but we'll see how it does next year.
Got a 40 gig for $320 + tax. She was surprised because it was such a deal but went through without a hitch
Now the question is, am I missing anything by not getting the 80 gig. I have NO interest in PS2 gaming. Once the DVR functioning comes out I'll be able to get a 120 gig HD or higher for the $85 price difference that I saved and putting in is a snap. Now the only question remaining is the absence of USB ports. Videos, pictures, and music, I can stream, so that's not a big deal (and I guess I can also burn to DVD and just have it read it 4 gigs at a time). The only concern then that remains is gamesaves. I suck at gaming so I use gamesaves I download from the Internet (for solo gaming, not online gaming). Can saves be read from a CD or DVD or can they be streamed or can they be transferred from a PSP, which I have?
Never thought I would see my name on a leaderboard!!! AWESOME!!!

Well current price is $67 for 120 gig SATA 2.5 drive... so it's about the same, but higher drive.
The DVR is coming out in Europe in 2008, U.S. may get to see it in 2009. Pretty much it's like a Tivo and you can transfer stuff to watch on the PSP.
So the question is PS2 backward compatibility... I think the software compatibility is not 100% and I do have a Slim PS2. So stick with the 40 gig?
Here is a breakdown:
$431 with Motorstorm
$345 with movie
$30 Motorstorm
$61 80 gig hard drive
$436, and includes movie
pinata242
11-12-07, 01:08 PM
40gig has 0 PS2-BC capabilities - not even via software emulation.
GatorDeb
11-12-07, 01:11 PM
I know. What I was wondering if it's worth to get the 80 gig one when even that has limited backwards compatibility.
I found a 160 gig for $57 after $100 rebate!!
http://www.3gplaza.com/estore/control/3gplaza/productdetails?id=70101&srccode=PW
So I guess the breakdown is:
$431 with Motorstorm
$345 with movie
$30 Motorstorm
$57 160 gig hard drive
$432, and includes movie, and double the hard drive space.
So I'm giving up BC for the movie and double the hard drive space.

Ohhhh, so what was missing was the card reader. I can just stream in the stuff using TVersity of stuff like that, so I don't need the card reader at all (and I haven't bothered to do that with the XBOX360, so I doubt I'll be using the PS3 for media, other than the PVR). The BC is about 70%, and I'd rather just have my PS2.

For the PVR stuff just Google "PS3 DVR" and there's going to be links to all over. It may be by March 2008, it may be early 2009, but sometime in the next 2 years the PS3 will be a Tivo.

If you don't mind keeping your PS2 around,
Which is still ridiculous. If you factor that in, Sony still hasn't really cut the price of the PS3.
I thought I was going to buy a PS3 at KMart today, but the woman in electronics told me that "Sears and KMart are the same thing now". The "Sears electronics" exclusion got in the way.
There were lots of coupon books in the pharmacy section though. The pharmacist told me to take as many as I wanted as she had "cases of them".

It's not ridiculous if the PS2 is paid for. Then it's only $400 for a PS3. Why buy the $500 model if you already have a PS2?

Why buy the $500 model if you already have a PS2?Virtual memory cards, wireless controllers (good ones), upscaled graphics, one system hooked up to the TV as opposed to two, etc. Plus, the firmware holds potential for future improvements, better upscaling quality, friend lists and XMB access during gameplay, etc.

Have to agree. The PS3 is really worth it. The upscaled visuals get rid of the LCD lag and I personally like the softening filters on a few games. I picked up one of those cheap Radio Shack PS2 to USB adaptors and now I can play my GH and GHII games on the PS3 (no whammy bar) and use a PS2 controller for multiplayer on Lego Star Wars.
The PS3 also loads some games a bit faster than the PS2. I really notice on MLB the Show.
I'm considering selling my PS2s since I rarely use them anymore and I hated the lag many games had on my HDTV.

So now GHII controllers work on the PS3? I thought certain buttons didn't work with those adapters. If that's the case I'm pissed off since I bought a PS2 last week to play the GH series games. Hey Sony would it have been so damn hard to put a PS2 controller port on your "ultimate gaming machine"?

I have the radio shack one and everything works except for the whammy bar. This is the same result I have on the PC with this adapter.
Mostly playing Lego Star Wars right now so its nice to finally play a PS3 game on my PS3. Just unlocked Indiana Jones and can't stop playing it.

If I did this, would it work this way? HDMI from PS3 to Receiver and then HDMI from Receiver to TV?
Also until I get the digital output stuff taken care of, can I have the HDMI go directly to my TV for video and have the composite (white and red cable) go to the receiver for audio?
Yes to both of your questions.

I don't really use the PS2, though, as it is. I fire it up about once every three months. If I have no use for BC, is there any reason to go for the 80 gig as opposed to the 40 gig if I'm going to end up paying the same but getting double the hard drive space and the movie?

i'm confused. with the 40 gig you get the movie (spiderman 3). with the 80 gig you get motorstorm... plus the 80 gig has the 2 extra usb ports and the media card reader... so if you can get either for the same price, i would get the 80 gb

It's not either for the same price. If I buy the 40 gig and I add in the cost of a 160 gig HD I just bought and of Motormstorm, THEN it is the same price. Hence it's the same price PLUS the movie and double the hard drive space. I've used the card reader on the Wii about 2 times, and for those 2 times I can use a USB card reader. And I'd want everything wireless so the extra USB ports are not much of a concern.

I never thought I would feel lucky to have a videogame system break on me. But, my PS3 Disk drive just broke. The system boots up properly, but it won't read any movie or game. I can play demos and movies on the hard drive. This happened just a week before the 1 year warranty expired. I just emailed Sony Support, so hopefully they take care of fixing my system free of charge.

Not on the 360 (but it does work with my cable box -- who knew?). I find that strange since the 360's USB powers my HDMI switcher even when the 360 is off.
DivX, Inc. today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.
"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."
Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality. DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

I would hope so but you never know. Since Microsoft has their own format they may not want to stray away from it. If they do add it, it won't be because they want to but only because they want to compete with Sony.

Assassin's Creed is available at FamilyVideo.com for under $50 shipped when you use coupon code: NEWMEM3F
Despite what you see in the coupon code, it works for existing members (worked for me!). FamVid seems to be one of the cheaper prices.
I've tried this several times and have never been successful.
They do have a new offer, $5 off a purchase of $50 or more, coupon code is 5HOLIDAY, and I got that to work for Assassin's Creed.

There was a story the other day with the same Divx guy talking about it coming to the 360.
Video codec firm DivX has been discussing the possibility of its support for the codec on the Xbox 360, with DivX CEO Kevin Hell commenting that the company is "in discussions" with Microsoft, but that it is "not a certified or licensed product at this time."
JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster questioned DivX CEO Kevin Hell in a Q&A session at the JP Morgan SmMid Cap conference transcribed by financial site SeekingAlpha, immediately following DivX's recent financial results.
Hell seemed caught off-guard when Coster mentioned hearing at a recent Microsoft conference about DivX's codec being incorporated on Microsoft's media extender, asking whether that relationship would extend to the Xbox 360.
Hell seemed initially enthusiastic, then backed off: "Yes! that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that. Um, that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time.”
Following Hell's comments, DivX CFO Dan Halveston stepped in to divert the direction of the conversation, according to SeekingAlpha. It is unclear whether any potential changes would occur swiftly enough to be included in the Fall/Winter Dashboard Update for the Xbox 360.

Fine you people broke me down. $86 bill is in the mail :p I went ahead and exchanged the 40 gig for the 80 gig. I figured that with firmware support it may be able to do cool things the 40 gig can't.
$400+tax for an 80 gig PS2. That's an awesome price. I'd expect the PS3's popularity to soar. The XBOX360 would have to be $220 ($400-$180 add-on) to be the same price, and it's not. The PS3 is the cheaper of the two now :) Can't wait to see Blu-Ray. And I got Motorstorm so I'm looking forward to that also. I'm also really looking forward to Home.

that's not retail price for the 80GB though. It's $500 not $400. Also the 360 is $380 now. So it is a $500 PS3 vs. $550 360/HD. All this is without factoring in Live or a wireless adapter(that every PS owner seems to think is required :nopanic: ) But getting down to the other non-essentials gets ugly.
Also it's hard to pin down a value on libraries. Is it worth an extra $50 for a larger library? That's up to the user.

You make some good points. The other thing to consider is the customer who just wants a game system and doesn't care about hi-def movies. For that sort of person, the 360 might be a bit of a better value than the PS3. Microsoft's decision to keep the HD-DVD player as an accessory can be seen as a positive or a negative depending on your intended usage of the console.

Assassin's Creed apparently has all the wonderful frame rate issues PS3 owners love to hear about. I really hope this is the last year we have to deal with games running great on the 360 and like crap on the PS3.
Edit: Or does it?
From the Gamespot review where it got a 9.0
There are few differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash.
From the IGN review where it go a 7.5
These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it's obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions.
Did they both play the same version?

PS3 outsells Wii in Japan for the first time.
Damn, guess we know the price point the Japanese were waiting for. I also guess that Sony was right about removing backwards compatibility. Didn't hurt sales any.
This is just one week, but that is a bright spot. Considering how stale Wii sales have been Sony could make a move in Japan if they can keep the software coming.

Bluetooth would be nice, but the ones I've seen are a little too expensive. I could actually probably live without the mouse component, I just think it would be nice to be able to type messages etc. without using the "one letter at a time" system on the controller.
