Why does everyone think the guy is "bragging" by inquiring what everyone does, where they do it, and how much they make? Maybe he wants to move and wants to know if salaries are comparable in other cities. Who knows.

It's the way he asked. He didn't ask this:

"Hey, I've been a DB admin at a major maritime law firm for the past 5 years and I'm looking to move to the Dallas area. Currently I'm making $X, and I was wondering what similar jobs in the area make. I know the standard of living is lower but the best offer I've gotten is for $Y and I feel like I could do better."

or this:

"I was thinking of switching careers from being an independent contractor in maritime privateering into being an independent contractor in the stealth, espionage and reconaissance industries. I'm hoping to make something in the range of $100k to $120k working 50/hrs per week. Can anyone confirm if this is realistic in today's market? Thanks."

But he didn't do that.

Funny cause every year I run a post on how much have you saved for retirement (401K, IRA) etc and that post is a huge hit. And no, I'm not looking to relocate or change jobs...I just thought it would be interesting to hear what each person earns, what they do, and where he or she lives.

as a Recruiter, I have spent the last 11 years asking people what they are currently making. It took me a few months when I started to feel ok doing it and now it is like second nature to me and I find that I have to stop myself sometimes (when it isnt work related).

on the other hand, I think it is good to know what people do and and how much they make doing it. you should be able to compare for yourself. this theory probably only really applies to your specific job but if i know someone else who does what I do I would like to know what they make compared to me. am i underpaid? overpaid? etc....

MLB salaries skyrocketed once the market knew what everyone was getting. same theory I guess.

I think there's a difference between responding to a salary poll from a website that collects that kind of data and discussing it in a public forum like we have here. I think there's also a difference when responding to an HR rep about salary. By their job definition, they are supposed to be discrete with that kind of information.

i wasnt disputing your theory at all. i actually sort of agree with you. i was brought up that speaking about money is a no no. i have just been conditioned over the years because of what I do. and yes, i am a recruiter, but not the discreet stuffy HR type....more of the headhunter type...
