I wonder what this is:

This says 4-disc set. The other doesn't. This one comes with a bonus CD so maybe that's the only difference.

The version on sale is the original version of the set which had three discs and a bonus music CD, it included "Rudolph", "Frosty the Snowman / Frosty Returns", and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town / Little Drummer Boy".

The more expensive version you linked to was last year's edition which included a 4th DVD (featuring an obscure Rankin/Bass special, "Cricket on the Hearth" along with some bonus music videos).

A new edition of the set, with revised cover art, was recently released for this year featuring all the specials from the 2006 edition, with the addition of "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol".

Confusing, isn't it?

Wow, that IS confusing. I bought the original for my $12 and that's the end of it. The ones in the original are my favorites anyway.

Yup! Saw the new one a week or so ago. I'm so sick of them revamping this set every year. :(

There's also a second set out now in the same style book with a blue cover that contains Grinch, Year Without a Santa Claus, Shiny New Year, T'was the Night Before Christmas, and I forget what else.

That's weird. I wouldn't expect Warner to license out the Grinch special.

How are the quality of these?

It's out of stock, but I was still able to order it. Great deal to pay $4 each for the top 3 Xmas movies of my youth (too bad it doesn't include "Year WIthout a Santa Claus" and the Grinch, because then it would have ALL the greats in it) and a couple of filler movies I consider thrown in and shipped for free, thanks.

Tell me about it. According to this site (http://enchantedworldofrankinbass.blogspot.com/2007/09/rankinbass-dvd-box-set.html), there are already plans for yet ANOTHER revised edition for 2008 featuring all-new bonus material including a Rankin/Bass documentary.

That's weird. I wouldn't expect Warner to license out the Grinch special.

The Christmas specials DVD collection in the blue box was put out this year by Warner Home Video. Warner Bros. also controls the rights to most of the post-1976 Rankin/Bass library, which explains how WB Home Video ended up with the rights to release "The Year Without a Santa Claus", "Twas the Night Before Christmas", etc.

I think I'll wait. One big set with all those great films would be welcome. A documentary would be outstanding. Does anyone NOT have fond memories of these growing up? For me, these were to Christmas what A Christmas Story became a few years later.

Unlikely. The 'red' set is controlled by Sony, the 'blue' by Warner.
