Double Duped: Inferior Double Dips

In this stage of DVD's existence double, triple and even quadruple dips are very common (although some unfortunate films/shows still haven't made their debut yet...) I was wondering if anyone has been burned by a new "special edition" that turned out to be not so special? Poor transfers, abandoned extras and audio tracks lost along the way. It also looks like even many of the new hi def releases are giving folks incentive to hold on to their old editions.

Got any tips on older (or even out of print) editions that are superior to their supposedly souped-up replacements?

Worst by far: The Cutting Edge: Gold Metal Edition. Probably the only time I've seen a "new" edition go from anamophic to non-anamorphic. They also used a sped-up PAL transfer on top of all (even the running time on the new edition is listed as shorter). The only new extra was a brief retrospective interview while the rest of the supplements were dedicated to the craptastic sequel, Cutting Edge 2: Going For The Gold.

Just throwing this out there but every Army of Darkness release after the 2-disc Limited Edition one.

The Siege - Martial Law Edition, missing the DTS track from the previous release.

Point Break Pure Adrenaline Edition also dropped the DTS track from the old version.

Beat me to it. My wife was mad when she saw a newer version on sale...until I told her how crap-tastic it was.

I sold the OOP 2-disc CE of Disney's Tarzan when I heard a new version was coming out. What a mistake! Fortunately, I didn't make that mistake with The Emperor's New Groove.

Would "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986) count as a double-dip or simply a "modified reissue"?

I'm going to say AB's Evil Dead re-release a few years ago because it didn't have the OAR.

Don't we have a thread around here somewhere with a big list of DVDs like this? I'm almost sure of it.

terminator 2, there were two, 2-disc editions. the one without the metal sleeve of the terminator isnt as good as the one with just the pic of arny (features wise, imo)

the new 2-disc national treasure looks bad

re-releases of some of eddie murphys old stuff.

the new 2-disc hard boiled isnt as good as the criterion (i dont like have 2 of the same movie but this ones an exception)

evil dead re-releases

when i think of more ill post again

I'm at a loss here--it's the same disc as the current edition with a new second disc of bonus features. How is this a lesser version of what's come before?

What he means is the original recalled DVD had the movie's rare alternate ending but David Geffen flipped his lid and the ones with said ending are quite rare and expensive. The "re-issue" is otherwise identical, the same disc without the alternate ending.

The newer 2-disc has less video features, but it also has a commentary by James Cameron and William Wisher. The thing about the T2 DVDs is the features don't overlap, so the two sets compliment one another.

The original release of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) has a much better (sharper) picture quality.
