Brentwood/Deimos 'Welcome to the Grindhouse' / Exploitation Cinema Series

i figured since it's pretty hard to get information on small releases like this that i'd start a thread to discuss them. they seem to be coming out 2 volumes per month so here's to hoping this series continues.

07/03/2007
vol. 1 - pick-up (1975) / the teacher (1974)
vol. 2 - black candles (1982) / evil eye (1974)

08/14/2007
vol. 3 - the bodyguard (1976) / sister street fighter (1974)
vol. 4 - dragon princess (1981) / karate warriors (1976)

09/11/2007
vol. 5 - don't answer the phone (1980) / prime evil (1988)
vol. 6 - malibu high (1979) / trip with the teacher (1975)

10/02/2007
vol. 7 - the hellcats (1967) / chain gang women (1971)
vol. 8 - coach (1978) / the beach girls (1982)

11/13/2007
vol. 9 - policewomen (1974) / las vegas lady (1976)
vol. 10 - superchick (1973) / hustler squad (1976)

I rented Voulume 5 just to check out the quality. It was just as good/bad as I expected.

I've ordered volume 7 and will probably pick them all up eventually. I'm a suck for these type of re-issues.

Rented Vol-1. Hated Teacher, but liked Pick-Up because it was...Out there.

I currently have a rental of Vol-2 for the horror challenge here. Watched Candles earlier and sort-of liked it because it was...Out there.
(That probably means I'll hate Evil Eye when I watch it tomorrow night)

Over at aintitcool.com, Harry Knowles is reporting that the Weinstein Company (the producers of the Grindhouse movie) have decided that they OWN the term "grindhouse" and are suing any company releasing DVD sets with "grindhouse" in the title.

I'm not sure that they could do that, since it would be like trying to copyright the term "Drive-In," but there you go. Hopefully Harry's sources are as reliable and impeccable as always, because I really enjoy this series and would hate to see it go away.

I tried to search and find it for you, but darn, that website really sucks for finding content/searching.

But maybe it is one of these links.

There's something very wrong with seeing the words "Harry Knowles" and "reporting" in the same sentence.

I'm really glad that somebody has started a thread for this DVD series. The titles have been pretty hit-or-miss, but there's almost always at least one thing about the films to warrant one viewing. So far, the biggest disappointments have been The Pick Up, Malibu High and Prime Evil. I would say that the most entertaining releases so far have been the two Sonny Chiba double features. I really hope that BCI plans on actually releasing all the films shown in the trailers on each disc.

i was thinking the same thing because 'ninja wars' (from the sonny chiba volume) looks awesome. though i realize it's available already, i'd just rather buy it from these guys with another movie attached to it.

Did volumes 9 or 10 ever come out? I haven't seen them in stores.

I haven't looked for them in a B&M store, but I received mine from DeepDiscount a couple weeks ago.

I saw volume 9 at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago, so it's out. Haven't seen Volume 10 yet (but then again I haven't been shopping in a while--I kind of avoid stores this time of year...).

I've viewed volumes 1,2,and 7 and with all three in the series, I've felt that one of the movies was slightly okay with the other being real atrocious.

Is there any verdicts to this movie? Because I've seen Policewomen before (Quite liked it) but I need some confirmation if LVL is actually worth looking at.

Last week I was watching Volume #9 (Police Women/Las Vegas Lady) and before the movies there was a trailer for "Superchick." Down in the lower right corner of the screen was the exact same transparent "SWV" logo that Something Weird Video puts on all of their releases. Sorry if this is common knowledge to everyone else, but is there some connection between Brentwood & Something Weird? Is the "Welcome to the Grindhouse" series some new division of SW? If not, then how did a Something Weird branded trailer get on a Brentwood release?

I saw the exact answer for this in a thread over on DVDManiacs.
IIRC, SW gave BCI a whole mess of trailers for use on these discs. I don't know what the actual contract is, but it would seem to me to be good marketing on SWVs part to have given them away free or for a very nominal charge- as it just advertises their product directly to the demo most likely to buy it.

Hmm. Thanks for the reply, but "Superchick" (the trailer I saw with the SWV logo) is on Volume 10 of BCI's Grindhouse series. In fact I just bought it last night from BCI, and not from Something Weird. So giving their trailer to BCI didn't help SWV in this case.

Does anybody know ifthe version of "Police Women" on the Grindhouse release is the same transfer as the standalone release of "Policewomen" released by Rhino:

The Rhino release claims that it is a new digital transfer from the original 35mm film.

re: LAS VEGAS LADY... I liked it in a cheezy way... It felt kitchsy like it was supposed to, had a nice vibe, but felt like OCEANS 11 on the cheap... If you liked POLICEWOMAN, it is well worth forking over the $9.

And as to the Rhino release of POLICEWOMAN being that which is used on the Brentwood release, I do not think so. The Rhino is 1.33:1 (not sure if it is open-matte or not-- Can anyone confirm if it is?)... The Brentwood transfer is in anamorphic widescreen, and looks very decent. Not sure if it was transferred from the orig. negative, though I doubt it.

So far, my favorite in the series has been MALIBU HIGH / TRIP WITH TEACHER, but most of the others have been great examples of the grindhouse mold... Bring more of em' on!!

I notice some overlap between this series and Brentwood's Starlite Drive-In Theatre series. Should I hold off on buying them, assuming all will join the Grindhouse series?

This box set, due later this month, is tempting:

I assume this "series" is dead. there hasn't been any addition since November and they were releasing them 2 a month every month then nothing for 3 months now. Maybe Weinsteins stopped them. Sucks I liked this series

Not dead, just undergoing a name change. They'll be back before you know it.

In a way, I'm glad. Because Crown International was really responsible for the most shitty exploitation movies of the era (And I know that's saying a lot)

Most of the movies in this series is now available in a recently-released collection by Brentwood/Deimos called "Drive-In Classics". And with such a cheap price, I decided to go for it (Just to see if more movies from Crown couldn't suck as bad as some others that I've seen like Teacher and Chain Gang Women, but to no avail, Sister-In-Law and Best Friends ended up being a waste of time)

Yet in all fairness, I'm halfway through with Malibu High and this one (Finally) doesn't seem as bad yet. So hopefully this collection will end on a good note.

But get Policewomen if you haven't already! That's been the only gem for me so far.
