Personal Best (1982, Robert Towne) - - - ->1/8/08

Let's see if anybody else actually wants this movie. (I rarely see it discussed in the "never released on DVD" threads).

Robert Towne's story of two athletes (Mariel Hemingway, Patrice Donnelly) training for the 1980 Olympic Games, with Scott Glenn (who's superb, IMO) as their manipulative coach.

IMO, this was never given a fair shake by audiences, and it disappeared from theatres rather quickly in 1982, despite an excellent script by director Towne. It was arguably ahead of its time for its matter-of-fact treatment of its lead characters' homosexual relationship.

This is one of only three films I had on VHS that hasn't been released on DVD yet. I've been hoping for Warner to release this forever. I assume it will be barebones, but I don't care. It's finally on its way.

I agree, this is a great movie, altho Mariel Hemingway's voice and her whining in this movie - ugh. But the rest of it is really good.

I'm looking for ward to it. Altho I already have a copy of it on DVD-R - so I'll wait and see if there is anything "extra" on it first.

Star 80 would be even better if they re-did it as an SE and also included E!'s
True Hollywood Story of Dorothy Stratten on a second disc.

I would second that and maybe those playboy interviews that Dorothy did would be a nice extra to.
