When renting/buying DVDs: DVD Release Date Calendars or DVD Tuesday Surprise?

Very soon after I started buying DVDs, I discovered DVD Release Date Calendars listed online and listed in DVD magazines. I don't remember the last time that I was surprised by seeing a certain DVD that I wanted on a certain Tuesday because I knew when this DVD was coming out (unless it was some obscure film that I forgot about that I wanted to rent/buy). Does anyone in here actually ever choose to be surprised about the DVDs released on Tuesdays in DVD stores and NOT look at DVD Release Date Calendars?

I agree. Besides, with so many titles being released now, you're almost assured of having a "surprise' from week to week.

Just waiting for the Bears game...

I couldn't agree more. I would never go into the store blindly....it just doesn't make any sense.

For the bigger releases I tend to look, but most of the time I have every release planned out for when I will buy them ie from Columbia House as an enrollment, DD 20% sale, B&M sale, down the road used or if a B&M has an exclusive set/steelbook.

Kind of a dumb poll to be based in a forum called DVDTalk.

not that dumb since two people voted never and rarely - it would be interesting to hear those stories of why they don't look at the Release Calendars...

I don't look at calendars, just subscribe to a bunch of DVD news RSS feeds.

I voted sometimes -- I like to know what's coming out, but never with the intent to buy at release time....since I'll wait for the inevitable price drops. I'm in a B&M store at least once a week and can check out the New Release section then and stay up to date on what's available.

I voted I always look at DVD Release Date Calendars.

Before I became a ‘true’ DVD collector I didn’t look at DVD Release Date Calendars because I only bought a couple of DVDs a month, if that.

Now that I buy DVDs every Tuesday & so many titles come out every week, I’d be lost if I didn’t look at the DVD Release Calendar. I’m a ‘must own that DVD on release date’ guy & I never wait for price drops.

I have my purchases mapped out months in advance, as soon as they hit Mao's release calendar.

I voted rarely. I first came to this site to check out the deals forum. I'm all about a good deal first and formost. I very rarely will buy a DVD on release day, if I do it's one I know is coming out (mostly Disney titles).

Here's a question though...WHERE do you check for the releases? I used to come in here to see what was coming out, but it seems like from time to time I'm unable to find the "What are you buying..." thread.

So what are some good places to check for the newest releases?

I'm too anal about what I want/need to not check release calendars. Hell, I actually use a composition book to make my own. Nothing worse than missing the release of something you really want because you didn't know when/if it was coming out.

Look at the top left corner of this very site were it says, Release List & that basically tells you all of the DVDs coming out that week.

There’s a sh*tload of sites that have DVD Release calendars.
