Why do people feel the need to post so many abhorrent or violent news stories?

Whether it's something like "Man kicks child into fountain at mall" or "Dog dragged behind motorcycle sidecar," it seems that people here just post whatever horrific story they come by. I'm all for free speech and all that, but browsing through political or dvd related stories to come across something like, say, this:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=512433

seems to be a bit much. What is the fascination with the constant posting of tragic stories about stuff like this? I realize I can choose not to read it and I'm not asking for stuff like that to be removed. I guess I'm just wondering what the motivation is in doing so. Anyway, that's that. Maybe I'm the only one......

Adj. 1. abhorrent - offensive to the mind; "an abhorrent deed"; "the obscene massacre at Wounded Knee"; "morally repugnant customs"; "repulsive behavior"; "the most repulsive character in recent novels"
I think it is done because people might find this while at work, start to discuss it with co-workers and then want to pass it on to otters!

Geez, of all the sick/tragic news threads, you picked the kitten one?

A lot of times people are just posting what's on the 'weird' news. Other times, they are posting a tragic story for the usual otter folks to laugh at. It's unfortunate that some on the forum have a twisted sense of humor.

I agree it is excessive but it's best to just ignore it and let it sink to the next page.

What is with that picture in your post? That's as disturbing as any of threads you're talking about.

I'm thrilled that people have a twisted sense of humor. It keeps things interesting.

Man, no one in this forum has any self restraint to not read thread topics they aren't interested in. But they do not have the restraint not to complaint about it.

I have the restraint. I was just asking for an explanation with regard to the poster's motivation and why these types of threads are so prevalent. But whatever......

I made it up. I was trying to think of something shocking and violent, yet totally absurd. I guess it was too clever.

We live in a violent world that is driven by news and people love to hear about it.

I guess. I understand the reason a news station reports it (since it makes them money on advertising the more people watch and so on).

I just don't really get why some people feel it's their responsibility to post it here......that's all I'm saying. (this is rhetoric, I don't need a response to every sentence I post).

News is news, but it appears that gruesome stories are posted mainly for the shock factor or to one-up the "worst human being alive" award.

And I don't enter the threads, but when you search "new posts," usually the thread title provides all the imagery required.

And that's that.

Mundane topics aren't likely to generate much discussion or comment.

It's simple Dick. Over the past 10-15, the news has moved from bad to worse. My parents won't even watch the local news anymore because it's all crime, murder, rape, violence, dead, kidnap, fire, property damage, loss, hurt, pain, etc. My mom actually counted the number of positive news stories in a week that had nothing to do with sports, weather or politics. It was two. That was it for her.

Look at the front page of Drudge or any news aggregator. It's the same there.

They both listen to news radio in the morning, so it's not like they are blocking out the world, just the local bad news.

I'd prefer to see one big Official Horrible People Thread than Yet Another Horrible People Thread - often reading the title of the thread is enough, and the body of the thread is just the usual bloodlust/outrage.
