I will usually wait until I see the overnight Nielsen numbers of the pilot, which will give me a good idea if it will last. But, most of the time, I will wait until the network greenlights the back 9 episodes.

Not enough options in your poll.
I season pass something before it ever airs if I know I want to check it out. It's easier to remove the pass later than it is to worry about manually setting it to record the first few episodes while I decide if I'll continue watching.
At least once in the past, I've set a show to record the first 2 episodes of a show, then forgot to add a season pass when I decided I like it enough to keep watching and wondered why it wasn't recording the 3rd episode. Oops. Setting a pass to begin with saves headaches like this.

It is kind of nice to start watching a show when you already have 2-3 episodes saved up. If you like the show, you can quickly watch more episodes, and if you don't like it you can quickly scan through the second episode to make sure you don't like it before you drop it. Sometimes I give a show 2-3 airings before I decide to drop it, unless I totally hate the pilot.

I would love to re-do this poll, however I guess it doesn't allow me to delete this thread after several replies have been posted.
