My Wal-Mart has a huge RESIDENT EVIL display. With this display were a bunch of Sony 2 DVD sets {using a "Midnite Movies"-ish banner "Dreadtime Stories"} that come with a free movie ticket to see RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION all for $13.72. I thought there were some good deals here.

All movies are anamorphic widescreen unless otherwise noted.

2 DVD sets with free movie ticket for $13.72
Resident Evil / Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Silent Hill / The Dark
The Woods / The Craft
Candyman / Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes
Hollow Man / Flatliners
Starship Troopers 2 / The Cavern
Ring Around the Rosie / Death Tunnel
The Marsh / Bats
Decoys / Decoys: The Second Seduction
Candy Stripers / She Creature

2 DVD sets for $13.72 but NO free movie ticket
The Grudge [Unrated Director's Cut] / The Grudge 2 [Unrated Director's Cut]
When a Stranger Calls / Glass House: The Good Mother
The Fog [fool screen PG13 version] / The Boogeyman [widescreen] - - > This was the only set with a fool screen version of a film.

I also saw a set with The Protector/Born To Fight at the same price, not Sony, but still a pretty smokin' deal.

I'll add this to the movie cash thread tomorrow.

Do you remember the details for the ticket? How much is it good for (7.50, 10.50)? When does it expire?

Seems like a pretty good deal!

Also, are these normal dvd-cases that are shrink-wrapped together? Or are they single case releases (containing 2 discs)?

They are single case releases containing 2 DVDs. The ticket is worth $10.50.

Tickets are Hollywood Movie Money, expire 10/20/07, worth up to $10.50.

On a related note, Best Buy has a killer deal on the new Resident Evil double pack. For $14.99 you get the two older movies on 1 disc, a disc of special features, a third disc exclusive to BB, this movie voucher, and also exclusive to BB $5 concession cash.

So, which is it? One keep-case or two?

One keepcase, with one of those tabbed extra disc holders in the middle.

I believe they are the same exact discs that come in the individual releases. Special features seem the same, disc art, etc.

So the Best Buy 2 disc contains all the special features of the individual RE 2 disc releases?

Well if I remember correctly RE had a special edition and delux edition, bith one disc. I think the features were carried over for the delux edition. REA had a 2 disc.

Basicly, I'm interested in this set, just want to know how much, if any special features will be lost.

There are a couple separate threads specifically about this RE release. We probably shouldn't clutter this thread with RE questions. Check the main forum and the bargain forum for RE threads.

Not trying to not help you, just trying to keep things in the right threads.

No problem posting it there, I just was replying to the two posts you previously posted about the RE release in this thread.

Doh! Yeah, I mentioned it since it is part of this Sony sale, but had other extras as well, and then answered a question. And now I'm "cluttering" the thread even more.

The forum is short on mods lately, so I'm trying to be a good veteran and help keep things tidy. But maybe I'm being a jerk? Sorry.

We should probably have no more than 1 thread per title per forum. Like one thread in Bargains for "all Resident Evil bargains/exclusives" and one thread in DVD Talk for general talk of the release.

Back on topic, I think I'll end up picking up almost all of these titles at WM. They work out to about $3.50 each for two movies/DVDs after you factor in the moviecash, and I'm a sucker for horror. Even if I end up selling or trading them all, it's a cheap rental.

No jerkiness taken, I just wanted to explain why I posted that. It's good to have someone remind people to stay on topic, message boards would be one long mess without it.

On topic- I agree, you can't miss with some of these titles. I'll be going to wal-mart later today.

I was pretty sure we were cool, but just wanted to get a public apology of sorts out there.

I wonder if some of the titles without the free ticket stickers might still have the movie $ inside? They all look like they "should" be part of the promotion, but one or two of the titles don't have the stickers. Anyone chance it yet?

The Fog [fool screen PG13 version] / The Boogeyman [widescreen] - - > This was the only set with a fool screen version of a film.[/QUOTE]

Has anyone confirmed for sure whether or not these DVD's have the movie cash? The display looks as if all of these 2 DVD sets should have the movie cash even though the sticket isn't on the package for these titles.

I'd be interested in The Fog/Boogeyman, but I'd like to know if it comes with the free ticket.

I found this at my local Walmart and was able to use the Dragon Dynasty $3 off coupon on it even though it had expired.

Saw this display the other day.

I was sort of tempted by the Grudge set, but the neon-orange "Deadtime Stories" banner on the package really turned me off.

I dunno... I might pick it up later.

I got the Grudge/Grudge 2 set and no Moviecash. The stickers on the front of the discs may be right, excluding the occasional mistake. Also, it seems that Wal-Mart got The Protector/Born To Fight sets earlier than most (Best Buy ws reading it as being released on 9/18). Sadly, I haven't seen with the other Dragon Dynasty two-pack, the two Police Story flicks.

I kinda like the banner - It goes well with my Midnite Movies double feature titles.

Ditto. This is future dump bin material, hideous packaging.

I'm kinda hoping that these go on sale when the new RE comes out. $10 wouldn't be such a bad thing, but $14 for each one? Mebbe.

Well, I indulged and I just got burned.

The version of Silent Hill in the Silent Hill/The Dark two-pack is NOT widescreen. Despite the packaging, the disc inside is clearly labeled FULL SCREEN and is not a misprint. It's the foolscreen version, pure and simple.

I'll take it back to Wal-mart tomorrow and exchange it to see if this is a constant thing or if I just got slammed.

I also bought this double feature today. I was about ready to tear-off the plastic when I read your post. I will wait for your next post before opening my DVD! :grumble:

Well, the weird thing about this is that while the packaging said widescreen, the little sticky label on top said 'Silent Hill FS' so maybe there's two variants floating around. I'll check tonight.

If not, I'm tempted to email Sony and get a widescreen copy that they promised.

Zbu
09-13-07, 03:10 PM
Update: exchanged the set and the Silent Hill version in the double pack was STILL the same full screen that is not described on the package. I threw an email to Sony last night (an email I had to dig to find) and they basically told me to send them the disc, the version of my DVD player, and the email I had sent.

I replied and told them to not send me a form letter and to listen to my complaint. Apparently I'm going to have to go higher for this. Anybody know of a phone number or real email address I could get some action from (if possible)?

On the bright side, I did get another Resident Evil Extinction movie cash ticket so the release is essentially free. But this is just unethical as hell, so I'm going to take some action. Be warned: Walmart's white theftproof tag on the top of the DVD is correct. Silent Hill is foolscreen, despite the Sony packaging.

I returned my unopened copy of Silent Hill/The Dark to Wal-Mart earlier today. I explained to Customer Service that the DVD was mislabeled as "widescreen" when it actually was "full screen." The refund person did not have a clue what this means, and just merely refunded my money and threw the DVD into a box with other return stuff.

A lot of the Wal-Mart promotional DVD deals are in "full screen" versions because the typical Wal-Mart customer does not own a widescreen TV, but rather owns a smaller traditional TV where a full screen presentation is easier to view! I am always careful in purchasing these promotional DVDs. However, in this case, Sony obviously screwed-up with packaging description.

Zbu

No kidding. The saddest thing is that now their customer service is telling me to send back the DVD on my own dime so they can fix their error. Did a little checking on Amazon to find out that sending my disc back (insured and with confirmation) would cost more than simply waiting for a cheap sale and getting a widescreen copy that way. What a mess.

I'm just going to wait it out. I'm not going to bother pointing out a hideous mistake on my own dime to a multinational corporation. I'll just be smarter in the future. Oh, and I'm sure the extra Movie Cash ticket I got when I returned it will ease the pain, but not much.

No display at my WM but I picked up Christine(SE)/Darkness Falls 2-Pack for $9.72. It has that snazzy dreadtime Stries banner which I kinda dig, I might search out all of these as a mini-collection

I found the same item for the same price today. I know this is a new double feature title that was not a part of the Resident Evil promotion from the other week. This leads me to think this might be a continuing series like the Midnite Movies line. :)

Well, I still need to get the rest of these. I figure while most of them are honest about what they contain, some of them are fairly good deals. Too bad one of the Wal-marts around here have stopped carrying them. D'oh.

Still, I actually found a theater who'll take Hollywood Movie Money nearby, so I'm not that perturbed.

It seems these are a limited run and some stores are selling out of them. They are out of production so when they're gone they're gone.

FWIW, when dealing with wal-mart - I've had success in stating that the DVD is defective - the box says widescreen, the DVD says/is fullscreen. If they require you to swap for another copy, open the new copy in front of them and show them the same results. Unless the CSR is a total ahole they'll see that the whole batch is defective and eventually refund your money.

That said, the 'line' as it were is continuing with other releases such as Christine/Some Other Movie and the three-pack with Wolf, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Full Screen), and Sleepwalkers. It seems that this may be Sony's half-assed Midnite Movies: instead of unearthing gems, they're putting out old stock in gift sets for cheap.
