I can't tell if this is going on at the stores or just online - does anyone know? I'd pick up the new Red Dawn release and something else for $20 with a $5 gift card thrown in. Many recent releases included.

I was in the store today and did not see this offer on the shelves.

I noticed this deal online and went into the store today thinking I could get it. One of the associates on the floor had no knowledge of it and told me it was likely an online only deal. So I decided against paying $3.98 shipping to get a $5 gift card.

It might be a good idea, OP, to change the title of this thread to indicate it's online only.

Weird. The new releases of Red Dawn and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are $9.99, while the old ones are $14.99.

There's free shipping on the gift card, so even if you opt to do in-store pickup on the DVDs and have the gift card shipped to you, you're not out any money for shipping.

this deal is good in-stores as well. I picked up 6 movies with $15 in gift cards.

FYI, they charge the full price of the movies so you are really paying tax on $19.98 and then they give you a free $5 gift card.

Sounds like I was wrong...suppose there's a first time for everything! -wink-

There was no signage in my store. Also, after the associate indicated he hadn't heard of the sale and thought it was online only, I asked him would I be able to order online and arrange for store pick-up? He said it wouldn't work. When I got home, I tried it and mistakenly tried to click on the 1st item in my cart for pick-up (it was the gift card) and it wouldn't let me. I assumed the associate was right--shame on me!

These are the two I bought, $19.98 and then a free $5 giftcard. Not as good as CH, but this way I guarantee I get the slipcovers.

At my local bestbuys they are set up with signage on endcaps/separate racks.

Pretty good deal. I bought Red Dawn, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Secret of Nimh & Borat, all with slipcovers, for $40 plus tax & got $10 in gift cards in return. That averages them out to $7.50 each, if you wanna look at it that way. The Secret of Nimh DVDs in the display didn't have the slipcovers but when I had wandered by the children's section, the ones there did have them so I just grabbed one of those instead. Just a heads up in case anyone else was looking to pick one up.

So I could use the $20 giftcard I got for buying 5 DVDs two weeks ago, to purchase 2 additional DVDs and get a $5 giftcard back. Hmmm.....

Picked up Happy Feet and That Thing You Do 2-disc set

While "Happy Feet" IS on sale this week, it's not part of the $5 gift card promotion, is it? It's not on the eligible title list.

Ok, so I ordered 2 of the $9.99 titles online and chose in-store pick-up. The gift card as part of the order was to be shipped (free). I haven't picked up the DVDs yet (have 5 more days to do so or my order is cancelled if I understand correctly), however I just got notice that my gift card is on its way!

Strange, but it almost seems like I could allow my order to be cancelled and still receive the gift card. I don't plan to do this, instead I'll hope to receive the gift card in the next couple of days and use it to help pay for the DVDs.

^ you could, actually. i ordered the 5 movies, get $20 gift card last week. the items were in-store waiting to be picked up, the GC was sent out to me. the GC came before i went to pick up the items, and i called to verify the pricing on the card and it was $20. since all they have in their system is the pick-up for the items, i suppose you could use the gift card to pay for the purchase. didn't try it myself tho. let us know what happens if you try.

so for those that are doing this at a B&M do you just grab the 2 dvds you want and pick up a $5 card or does the cashier give you the $5 card?

When cashier rings up the two dvds a window will pop up on his screen, and he will grab a gift card, ring it up and give it to you.

But feel free to bring a specific gift card to the cashier with you. Some gift cards have coupons, one has DVD-Rom content, some have holiday messages, etc. You don't have to take the generic gift card they'll grab for you.

question. Seems like a good way to pick up all 4 Alien SE films for $35, and get $5 off next purchase (buy 2, get gift card, walk back buy other 2 with gift card = $35, plus get new gift card). But that means no 9th disc of the quadrilogy set.

Is it worth the extra $ to get the quadriligy set for the 9th disc? of is $35 for the separates pretty good?

shyguy1083
09-11-07, 03:38 PM
only 3 of the alien SEs are 9.99, only alien, alien 3 and alien resurrection are part of the deal. aliens is 14.99.

so you can buy alien and alien 3 for $20, get the $5GC, use it when buying alien resurrection and aliens... it'll bring your total to $40, but no additional $5GC for future purchases.

i was pondering taking advantage of this deal a few weeks back. the responses i got said to WAIT for the quadrilogy package. so that's what i'm doing. lowest i ever saw it was $31.99 a while back. dunno when they might get it back or when it might go on sale at another b&m. but i've waited this long to wait it, so it won't hurt to wait much longer, i suppose.

Steve

The problem with the quadrilogy set is that I have heard some folks (lots?) having problems with discs shuffling... so wondering if it wasn't actually safer to buy the 2 disc SE separately than order the 9 box set online and get a defective set..

I wanted to get a couple of these DVDs with slipcovers but I hate that Best Buy price sticker stuck directly to the slipcover. I don't think it will come off cleanly. Would be fine if the slipcover was under the cellophane.

When they did the "Buy 5, get a $20 gift card" deal a few weeks back, I ordered my five movies for pick-up, and it said the gift card would be mailed. They ended up messing up my order royally by pulling the wrong (single-disc) versions of 3 of the DVDs off the shelf. (The order itself was fine... the employee at the store just didn't check the product numbers.) They insisted on canceling the order and re-doing it (even though, like I said, the actual ORDER part was fine... they were just boneheads), so I got the gift card in-store. When I got home, I had an email notification that the gift card from the first "in-store pick-up" had been sent.

When I got the gift card in the mail a few days later, I was quite excited to think that they had screwed up and given me an extra 20 bucks. I checked the balance of the gift card, and sure enough, it had 20 bucks on it.

Then I checked my credit card statement, and noticed a charge from Best Buy... for 20 bucks. I still think it's a rather crude way of handling the situation, since I never actually agreed to buy a $20 gift card. Anyhow, that's how they handle the whole gift card in the mail thing if you cancel your order.

Rkndkn try a product called "Un-Du". It's a little hard to find, but Amazon usually has a bottle. Unlike other adhesive removers which removes the sticker and stain or worse the paper. Un-Du is paper friendly. In fact I used to just today to remove the sticker from "Return Of The Living Dead" the new SE. I'll admit it, it's kinda pricey. But if you're like me, it's worth the money. Unrelated... there's a new lenticular slipcover for the unrated version of "The Girl Next Door"; re-released 2007.

So the Alien series SEs in this sale...are they the steelbook ones?

shyguy1083
09-17-07, 12:18 AM
^ as far as i know (correct me if i'm wrong) the alien series never got steelbooks released in the US. the ones on sale are the two-discs in digipaks.

No sweat, I just wanted to make sure Best Buy didn't put any out like they did with X-Men 1.5. Still sweet, but is there any real bonus to getting these besides the Quadrilogy pack?

shyguy1083
09-17-07, 01:07 AM
dunno. i could never find pics of the open digipaks. i really do like the covers though. i plan to purchase the quadrilogy tomorrow at borders using their 40% off coupon. list price of the quadrilogy on their website is $59.99, so with the coupon it should bring the set down to $36.99. so it's about the same price as buying these individually factoring in the gift cards you get.

as i stated previously, at my best buy, only alien/alien3/alien resurrection are $9.99 and part of the buy2get$5gc deal. so for me, it works out better to get the quadrilogy.

Best Buy jacked me out of a Professional disc by replacing the SE with the full screen basic version. Instead of telling them, I just returned it and got my money back. Fortunately, the $20 gift card had been spent on something different so that went well.

Moral? Best Buy just doesn't pay attention. Sometimes it's better to get it shipped to you.
