Doctor Who to Skip 2009

Some very interesting news on the Dr Who front - no Who series for '09!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6976178.stm

Hopefully this means Tennant will return for another series in 10 and we won't be subjected to a new Who so soon.

Hmmmm. Well, at least we won't be Who-Free in 09. We're getting 3 specials AND they confirmed Series Five.

As for a New Doctor after three seasons/years, that seems to be the usual "run" (give or take a story). Hartnell, Troughton, Davison and McCoy all did 3 seasons (Tho I'll cut McCoy some slack because the show ended before the end of his run). Troughton even told Davison not to do more than three years for fear of typecasting.

If Tennant said he was done after Series 4, I wouldn't be surprised. Sad but not surprised.

I'm not sure it's ever "good news" when something like this is announced.

But, if in addition to those specials, we have both Sara Jane and Torchwood that year, I guess it's not all bad.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the rumor of Davies leaving after series 4.

Could do. Honestly, I've enjoyed a lot of the arcs he has put in place. However, I can see how some people aren't too pleased with some of the scripts he has penned.

If RTD is leaving, I would LOVE for Mofatt to take over. He has written the best episodes of the 3 seasons to date. Mind you I'm assuming he can piece together a stor arc for the year.

If skipping a season is the only way to keep Tennant around, then I can live with that. He's my personal favorite Doctor and I'd hate to see him leave just yet.

It's not much worse than LOST taking a 9 month hiatus, or Sci-Fi trying to stretch season 4 of Battlestar Galactica into 2 seasons.

It'll give them time to get a new showrunner (and possibly new doctor) in place for a proper series 5 the following year. I'm thinking this isn't bad news, but a sign that they're being careful during the transition period.

I hope Tennant sticks around, too. But if he's playing Hamlet at the RSC from July to Nov 2008, that may mean his dreams are moving on.

My guess is that Davies and/or Tennant threatened to leave the show unless they got a break.

From what I've heard it seems like a foregone conclusion that Davies is done after 4. He may work on the 3 specials, but I'd be surprised if he's around in 3 more years for 5.

Wonder if that will have any impact on Torchwood.

Although Davies "created" and wrote the pilot, Torchwood has a different show runner.

They could be grooming it for a run on BBC1 with a bigger budget...hmm.

Torchwood is a poor replacement for Who unless the writing improves.
Glad that Tennant isn't leaving.
