Hatchet - 9/7/07

Early reviews are very positive but the trailer looks just like any ol' slasher film...its got freddy, jason, and candyman in the cast though!

Frown upon it or not, I've had the NC-17 bootleg for months and it KICKS ASS! Fans of hardcore, old-school horror will not be disappointed. I may go see this in it's slightly truncated form just to support a good bloody horror flick.

Also: Best. Ending. Ever.

I agree that the trailer did absolutely nothing for this movie. It's odd, they tout it as being praised by critics and being big at festivals, and then they give us a trailer that isn't memorable at all, or even well done.

I'm definitely going to see it because of all the positive things i've heard about it. The budget is only 1.5 million, so i'd say that we'll be seeing a sequel if the movie makes any kind of money at all.

The TV spots are absolutely terrible, but it had the largest crowd I've ever seen at Comic-Con for an indie film panel. People seem to really dig it.

Last year, they played a teaser for this at the Monster-Mania Con in NJ that had the crowd going fucking nuts, and nobody knew what the hell the movie was. Any idea how much is cut for the R-rated version?

I think they only trimmed a few minutes, but if you've seen the NC-17 cut you'd know exactly what. I'll just say this: some of the most inventive, extremely brutal and gory deaths I've ever seen. Thankfully the DVD will be unrated.

With that kind of hype i'm worried that it won't live up to it.

Often times when a movie is hyped up like that, it can't live up to it. I mean, I remember people going absolutely F-ing INSANE for "Cabin Fever" when it was doing it's run at horror festivals in the year leading up to it's release. Everyone was saying how amazing the movie was... When I watched the movie, I had it built up in my mind as this great movie that I'm about to see, and it was just...awful. Even watching it since then, and knowing the movie that it is, and not having expectations, I just don't find the movie to be well made. This makes me wary of hype with every movie (especially comedies)

If you love 80's slasher flicks there's no way you could be disappointed, but don't go in expecting the Citizen Kane of slasher flicks. Expect a good time and your expectations should be surpassed.

I was hoping to see it this coming w/e. I'm seeing 3:10 to Yuma today (9-2), so outside of Shoot em Up, I have some extra time to take something else in.

Horror has been so weak this year, I was hoping for Halloween to save it but it failed, so maybe this will.

I'm trying not to hype this up in my head too much. From what I've heard its being praised so much because it is simply a good early 80's style slasher. As tempting as it is to find the NC-17 version mentioned above, I'm going to hold off and see it at the theater this week (playing at the theater closest to me, baby! Although I may have to fight a few cholo's by the time it's over, considering the neighborhood). I'll watch the unrated version when it comes to DVD.

Speeking of which, Killercannabis, you said the DVD WILL be unrated. Do you know that for sure?

This sucks - one theater in all of New York and it's in the city. AND I have to be at a wedding upstate this weekend. No Hatchet for me unless it goes a bit wider.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's over-the-top, self aware (the director is, the characters aren't), unpretentious, ridiculously gory, stupidly graphic, and all over just really, really entertaining.

Scary? Not in the least, but I wasn't expecting it to be. One of the more entertaining movies I've seen this year.

To note, however, I went in knowing very little about the movie, so I don't know if it can live up to the so called "hype".

I'm glad to hear this is a spoof, of sorts. I never even heard of it until I saw it under "opening" this week on Rotten Tomatoes. At first I thought, "Great, we can thank "Saw" for this...what's next, "Drill"? "Hammer"? "Knife"??" But it sounds like it could be something like "Slither". Am I correct?

Actually it did kind of remind me of Slither, but somewhat less serious and better paced.

Honestly though, it's about as far removed from the Saw/Hostel bunch as you can get.

If you're a fan of old fashioned slasher flicks and don't over analyze everything (ie - that person that can't watch X-men because humans can't regenerate), I can't see you not having a good time with the movie, it's simply fun to watch.

As a slasher flick it's pretty damn great. It was gory and the humour worked. I was only slightly disappointed that...
Spoiler:
the kills got less inventive and gory as the movie went on. The first ones were awesome (especially the old couple) but the last ones were kinda meh

I'm not 1000% sure, but Adam Green and AB have basically said as much in recent interviews. They fought to NOT have to cut the film, so the odds of them releasing only the R-rated cut is highly unlikely especially since they want to sell as many discs as possible to guarantee that sequel.

I was thinking of seeing it this weekend (hopefully I'll have the time) and noticed it's only playing at the one theater. Viva la woohoo!!

I read a few posts -- elsewhere -- stating how scary this movie was suppose to be. Let's just say the movie isn't scary in the least... Possible marketers I assume?

This movie is for fans of campy horror (mixed with comedic bits), not those of us looking for scares. This movie is very campy. It's fine for what it was, but not what I expected. Just keep that in mind.

A few people were saying this was a cross between "The Burning" and the early "Friday the 13th" films. Not at all... Not in my opinion. Those films generally kept a serious theme and tone, and went for scares during their releases -- whether they succeeded or failed is not the point.

This film resembles mid-80's horror more than anything else -- when comedy starting seeping into horror films. As far as "Friday the 13th" goes, I'd say this resembles "Jason Lives" far more than the other ones.

That's my two cents. Alot of people will relive moments of "Cabin Fever" hype when they see this film. No, the film isn't like "Cabin Fever," I just mean the hype surrounding it.

The film is fine, just not what I expected. I didn't think it was bad.

The trailer completely mis-represents the film.
