Are the LOTR regular editions worth it if I have the EEs?
I can get them all for a total of $23 or so. I'm just wondering whether the extras are good, and whether certain cuts are superior. You see, I haven't seen all of the movies yet...I saw the first in theaters, and parts of the third, so all of these are new to me. I bought the EEs recently because they were $8.50 each but these are also a good price...

I know I'm in the minority, but I always preferred the theatrical cuts of FOTR and ROTK to their extended editions, which ranged from needless scene extensions (Fellowship) to excessively bloated (Return). The EE of Two Towers, however, is excellent, mainly because it felt like there were whole chunks of the film missing it its theatrical cut.
Extras-wise, you're not really missing much--it's mainly a lot of EPK-ish featurettes and of course, the trailers.
So, my preferred viewing experience would be:
Fellowship - Theatrical
Two Towers - Extended
Return - Theatrical

I don't own the original releases, but for a good price I certainly would. I wouldn't mind owning the theatrical cuts. Otherwise, the trailers would be worth a couple of bucks alone.

From a 'historical' point of view it's worth owning both editions, one representing the theatrical version and the other representing (I assume) the director's intended vision. Both have certain advantages, one's obviously shorter the other somewhat more padded but also containing important characterisation and plot points etc. Either way the story's the same.
If you'd owned the theatrical I'd have said get the extended but I'm not sure I'd do it the other way round.

I have both, mainly because there was no way I was waiting for the EEs to come out. Besides, as my favorite movies, I like to be complete.
That said, I doubt I will ever watch the theatrical versions again.

As a big fan of the films and a completest, definitely!
But you haven't even watched them yet, so until you know how much you love them, I'd wait. They're on sale all the time.

I'd say it's only worth it based on your preference of a full, "complete" set of extras, and which of the versions you think is superior. For instance, I may own all three EE's, but I think the extended cuts of TTT and ROTK drag on for way too long, but I thought FOTR's cut is still the best of the three. I believe that the theatrical discs have trailers and a couple little documentaries that aren't on the EE's. Don't get me started on all the limited edition material, though.

For a while I was popping in the TEs when I wanted to zip through 30 minutes of highlights rather than watching the whole movie. (Haven't done that in a while tho). and I think I liked one of the music videos.

I prefer the extended cuts of both Two Towers and Return of the King. What I like most about the ROTK is the scene with the "mouth of Sauron" that scene and character are just so wicked awesome.

Personally I won't watch the theatricals either, but they have some special features on them (trailers, etc) that mean I haven't gotten rid of them.

If you already own the EE's I don't see much use for the theatrical cuts, unless, like some others here, you prefer those cuts. The only reason I bought all 3 of them was because I wanted to watch the films again and couldn't wait for the EE; and they always had a trailer for the upcoming film included which was great to watch over and over to hype myself up. But for $23 you may as well just bite the bullet.
